Abstract

Inhalation apparatus comprising a housing 1, means 10 within the housing for holding a first liquid, one or more inlet passages 3 for allowing air into the housing, the or each inlet passage 3 being arranged to introduce air into the interior of the housing 1 from beneath the surface of the first liquid wherein the air is caused to percolate or bubble through the liquid. The apparatus may have means 12 e.g. vibration, for exciting the liquid. The apparatus may heat the liquid. The apparatus may have air cooling means which involves a receptacle 18 that holds ice.

Description

Inhalation apparatus This invention relates to inhalation apparatus.
According to the invention, there is provided inhalation apparatus comprising a housing defining an interior volume that is sealed off, in use, from the surrounding atmosphere, means within the housing for holding a liquid, one or more exit passages for drawing air out of the housing, one or more inlet passages for allowing air into the housing, the or each inlet passage being arranged to introduce air into the interior of the housing from beneath the surface of the liquid held therein, whereby incoming air is caused to percolate through said liquid.
By way of example, embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings, in which: Figures 1 and 2 are schematic views illustrating the inner workings of a first embodiment of inhalation apparatus according to the invention, and Figures 3 and 4 are schematic views of a second embodiment of inhalation apparatus according to the invention.
A first form of inhalation apparatus seen in the drawings comprises a housing (1) which sits on a base (7). The housing (1) is of transparent or translucent material, such as glass, synthetic resin or plastics.
The housing (1) and base (7) together define an enclosed space, the interior of which is sealed off from the surrounding atmosphere in an essentially air-tight manner.
Mounted on the base (7) is a reservoir (10) for holding liquid.
Liquid is supplied to the reservoir (10) by means of a cartridge (8) which is loadable into the apparatus via a central aperture in the housing (1). A dispensing value (9) controls the supply of liquid and can be actuated, e.g. by pushing down the cartridge (8), to release liquid into the reservoir (10).
Conduits (3) within the housing (1) provide open communication with the surrounding atmosphere via ports (2). The conduits (3) are arranged with their lower ends beneath the level of liquid in the reservoir (10) in use.
This means that air entering into the housing (1) via ports (2) and conduits (3) will do so by bubbling up through the liquid.
Also mounted on the base (7) is an ultrasonic vibration device (12). The vibration device (12) is powered by a battery pack (13) mounted on the base (7). Other sources of power could of course be used instead, such as mains electricity, solar cells, etc. The vibration device (12) is for stimulating the liquid in the reservoir (10) to encourage its vaporisation within the housing (1).
The base (7) is provided with a sloping sill (17) to ensure that as liquid vapour condenses on the inside of the housing (1), it will collect in the reservoir (10).
The housing (1) incorporates a safety release valve (16) to guard against excessive build up of pressure within its interior.
A number of suction tubes (5), connecting with the interior of the housing (I), extend from it via fittings (4). The fittings (4) incorporate non-return valves (6) which are arranged to allow air to be sucked out of the housing (1), but not blown back in.
In using the apparatus, a user may inhale air from the interior of the housing (1) using one of the suction tubes (5). The inhaled air will taste clean and fresh, as it will have percolated through the liquid in the reservoir (10) and mixed with the atomised vapour within the housing (1). The resultant reduction of air pressure creates a pressure differential across the housing (1), which will cause air from the surrounding atmosphere to be drawn into the housing via ports (2) and conduits (3). The air thus drawn in percolates up through the liquid in the reservoir (10) and into the interior of the housing (1), where it again mixes with the vapourised liquid.
Various different liquids may be used in the apparatus. The liquid may be plain water. Alternatively, it may be chosen to have certain properties, for example as to flavour and/or homeopathic qualities, in order to infuse the air within the housing (1). The infusion process is enhanced by the vaporisation of the liquid in the reservoir (10) under the action of the vibration device (12).
The vibration device (12) may be arranged to operate continuously or at periodic intervals. Alternatively, it may be arranged to operate in response to demand. For this, the apparatus may incorporate one or more pressure transducers (15) that are calibrated to sense pressure variations within the housing (1) and arranged to activate the vibration device (12) whenever a user inhales from the apparatus.
The apparatus may further incorporate a number of LED lights (14) that are arranged to light up and/or flash and/or change colour in response to a drop in pressure sensed by the pressure transducers (15), thus adding a visual sensation to the physical experience of an inhalation. The apparatus may additionally comprise an audio signal generator, again activated by the pressure transducers (15), in order to add an aural sensation to the experience of inhalation.
A second form of inhalation apparatus is seen in Figures 3 and 4.
This is in principle generally similar to the first form of apparatus seen in Figures 1 and 2. In this case, however, the housing (1) is additionally provided with a recess (18) on top. The recess (18) lies adjacent to the air conduits (3) and communicates with them via small bleed holes (not shown).
The recess (18) is designed to receive frozen liquid, eg ice cubes. This has the effect of cooling the air that is drawn into the housing (1) via the conduits (3).
Also, as the frozen liquid melts in the recess (18), the bleed holes allow this to trickle down the conduits (3) and into the liquid in the reservoir (10).
Also in this form of apparatus, one or more heating elements (20) are provided. These are for heating the liquid in the reservoir (10), which helps to bring the chilled incoming air up to temperature.
A further feature of this form of apparatus is that the interior of the housing (1) is compartmentalised into a number of discrete vapour chambers, in this case three. Each vapour chamber is essentially sealed off from the others. Also, a separate recess (18) is associated with each vapour chamber. The liquid reservoir (10) could be made common to all three, in which case the incoming liquid melt from each recess will all mix together with the liquid in the reservoir. In the alternative, the reservoir may itself be divided up into a separate section for each vapour chamber. This allows the possibility for a number of users to use the apparatus simultaneously, sharing the same common stock of liquid, but with their own individual reservoir and associated frozen liquid additive. Thus, each reservoir may be arranged to receive a stock of chocolate-flavoured liquid, for example, which could then be individually "tinted" in each of the individual vapour chambers using different frozen liquids in their respective recesses (18). One recess might be arranged to hold menthol-flavoured ice, for example, another raspberry-flavoured ice and so on. Using different combinations, the apparatus enables multiple users to enjoy an endless variety of different flavours and sensations at the same time.
