Abstract

A wheeled bin has multiple compartments for the separation of recyclable waste. The compartments are hinged so that they are relatively pivotable and can be lined up to allow the waste to remain separated during transfer to a multi compartment collection vehicle. There are 5 compartments which are colour coded to indicate the type of waste. Ideally there is a draw in the base for paper. The compartments closest to the spine can contain glass and biodegradable waste while the outer compartments can hold plastics and metal to reduce weight at the extremities when the bin is full and unfolded. The compartments may be retained in the folded state by a rubber clasp and locking pin. The bin is ideally formed by injection moulding plastics. A stop prevents the sections unfolding further than 90 degrees to each other.

Description

I
NEIL MORGAN -BLUE PLANET RECYCLING
MULTI COMPARTMENT RECYCING
AUTOMATIC DISCHARGE WHEELIE BIN
DESCRIPTION
1. An injection moulded five colour-coded compartment hinged and unfolding recycling wheelie bin enabling automated simultaneous mechanical discharge into a purpose built multi-compartment receptor vehicle.
2. Base drawer compartment (#1) to be used for cardboard, paper and newspaper waste.
3. Compartments #2 to #5 (numbered from left to right when looking at front) to be used respectively for tin, glass (all colours and clear), biodegradable waste and plastics.
4. The outer compartments when unfolded (#2 and #5) will respectively contain tin and plastic products in order to reduce weight to the extremities of the bin when it is laden.
5. The bin has a solid metal core or spine, a high strength galvanised metal rod, around which compartments #3 and #4 will hinge and rotate. The circular metal core will taper into square section approximately 125mm long at its base and will locate into a female square cut-out within the rear of compartment #1.
The end of the core will be threaded and will be fixed in place with a locking nut and plate washer. The metal core will be a minimum of 20mm in diameter.
The metal core will rise through the enclosing hinges of compartments #3 and #4 and eventually turn at 90 degrees whereupon it will project for a further 150mm approximately before forming a T' section to enable attachment of the hinged lid.
6. The overwhelming feature of the design is the unique hinged and folding concept, allowing the bin to be unfolded for automated discharge into a purpose built receptor vehicle. Following discharge the compartments are folded back together again and held in place with a simple rubber clasp or locating pin.
7. The entire bin will be formed by injection moulded plastics, including the hinge design and shape. The hinge design incorporates an integral restraint or stop' preventing each of the compartments from rotating and unfolding beyond 90 degrees respectively.
8. The bin will have fitted conventional wheels and a simple conventional metal rod axle which will pass through the rear of compartment #1.
9. The attached drawings (Colour p1-5, Green p1-5, Overview Concept p6, Overview Operation p7) illustrate and explain the concept and design far more effectively than the
above description.

Claims (9)

  1. CLAIMSAn injection moulded five colour-coded compartment hinged and unfolding recycling wheelie bin enabling automated simultaneous mechanical discharge into a purpose built multi-compartment receptor vehicle.
  2. 2. According to claim 1, an enclosed base drawer compartment (#1) with a hinged flap to be used for cardboard, paper and newspaper waste located at the base or bottom of the bin structure.
  3. 3. According to claim 1, colour-coded compartments #2 to #5 (numbered from left to right when looking at front) to be used respectively for tin, glass (all colours and clear), biodegradable waste and plastics.
  4. 4. According to claim 3, the outer compartments when unfolded (#2 and #5) will respectively contain tin and plastic products in order to reduce weight to the extremities of the bin when it is laden.
  5. 5. According to claim 1, the bin will have a solid metal core or spine, a high strength galvanised metal rod, around which compartments #3 and #4 will hinge and rotate, the circular metal core will taper into square section approximately 125mm long at its base and will locate into a female square cut-out within the rear of compartment #1, the end of the core will be threaded and will be fixed in place with a locking nut and plate washer, the metal core will be a minimum of 20mm in diameter, the metal core will rise through the enclosing hinges of compartments #3 and #4 and eventually turn at 90 degrees whereupon it will project for a further 150mm approximately before forming a T' section to enable attachment of the hinged lid.
  6. 6. According to claims numbered 1 to 5, the overwhelming and unique feature of the design is the hinged and folding concept, allowing the bin to be unfolded for automated discharge into a purpose built receptor vehicle, following discharge the compartments are folded back together again and held in place with a simple rubber clasp, slide lock or locating pin.
  7. 7. According to claim 6 a further unique and innovative feature is the fully automated and simultaneous unloading of the five bin compartments into the purpose built receptor vehicle without the use of physical labour.
  8. 8. According to claim 1, the entire bin will be formed by injection moulded plastics, including the hinge design and shape. The hinge design incorporates an integral restraint or stop' preventing each of the compartments from rotating and unfolding beyond 90 degrees respectively.
  9. 9. According to claim 1, the bin will have fitted conventional wheels and a simple conventional metal rod axle which will pass through the rear of compartment #1.
