Abstract

An electrical back box has a flange 1 around the main opening of the unit, such as to be used to affix the back box to stud walls. This may allow for direct fixture to a stud wall without the use of a noggin, dwang or bracing piece. The box may be installed behind exterior sheet/plasterboard which makes the box not visible on the finished wall.

Description

Title: Stud Box
Background:
This invention relates to an electrical back box which can be installed directly on to a wall stud without the use of additional noggins or dwangs. A Noggin or dwang is a horizontal or vertical bracing piece used between wall studs or floor joists to give rigidity to the wall or floor frames of a building.
The flange/lip of the stud mounted electrical back box is secured to the front of the wall stud by screws and is designed so as to be hidden once the exterior sheet/plasterboard has been installed. Fixing back boxes with the use of noggins has become a costly and labour intensive task. This invention reduces the time and effort required to fix a back box to a stud mounted wall.
Statement of invention:
To overcome this, the present invention introduces a flange/lip around the front of the box to allow direct fixing to stud work with the aid of screws, this box is designed so that it is installed behind the plasterboard not over the front therefore no unsightly lip will sit on the front of a finished wall.
Advantages: Non combustible. It will allow a higher fire protection rating due to it not being fixed to a timber /ply noggin or other combustible noggins and is manufactured from metal which also increases the fire rating of this box.
The flange/lip is secured by screws to the front of the stud so that the depth of the box is automatically determined without the need of measurement prior to installation. The box will always be directly behind the plasterboard and never too far back or too far forward, thus ensuring a tight enclosure with no gaps providing a higher fire protection.
Quicker faster installation, the box is installed directly to the stud work, without the aid of noggins/dwangs reducing costs.
This present invention allows electrical accessories to be pressed against the plasterboard ensuring a firm fixture with little or no movement. A clamping method is introduced when the accessories screws are tightened against the back box sandwiching the plasterboard.
The flange/lip will never be visible on the front of the plasterboard allowing accessories to sit directly to the plasterboard without an unsightly lip for a clean finish.
Its simple construction renders it easy and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Introduction to drawings:
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the stud box fixed to the stud by the use of the flange/lip from the front view.
Figure 2 shows the stud box fixed to the stud from the rear view.
