Abstract
The container 2 includes a mechanism to rewind or recoil a bag 1 back into its container. The mechanism includes an axle 10, around which the bag can be wrapped, a one way drive bearing 12 attached to the axle and a spool 14 connected to the one way bearing and having a cord 16 wound on it, the spool surrounded by a cover 6. In use one end of the bag will be attached to the axle and on pulling of the cord, the axle is rotated and the bag is pulled back into the storage container and wound round the axle. The end of the bag may be provided with a cover 28 for the exit aperture 4 of the container, which prevents the total entry of the bag into the container and which provides an accessible part to pull from for removing the bag when unwinding it from the axle. When the bag has been unwounded, the container itself can be used as a handle for the bag via loop 32 which lodges into groove 34 on the container. The cord may have a finger pull 18 which can be lodged in a corresponding formation at one end of the container.
Description
Storage Device The present invention relates to a storage device, typically for a bag or the like. 5.
The use of a large number of plastic bags, issued free to customers with their shopping, has a significant environmental impact, including the use of the material and energy to produce the bags, the litter problem, and limited biodegradability of the bags. It is currently becoming more desirable for shoppers to take re-usable bags to the supermarket, or on any other shopping trips. However, the carrying of shopping bags and remembering to take shopping bags of each shopping trip can be inconvenient.
It is therefore desirable to provide a convenient storage device, suitable for a bag, which easily fits into a handbag, pocket or onto a key-ring.
The object of the present invention is to provide a storage device typically for a bag or the like.
According to the invention there is provided a container, including:- * a rigid storage container having an aperture to allow storage and removal of an item * an axle extending within the rigid container for the item to be wound round for storage * a mechanism for winding the item round the axle, the axle extending into the mechanism, the mechanism including: * a cover for the mechanism, * a spooi having a cord wound on it and withdrawable from it for rotation of the spool, * a one way drive for connecting the spool to the axle for winding of the item on the axle on withdrawal of the cord and * a spring connected to the spool and cover, to rewind the cord on its release.
Jn use one end of the item will be attached, either directly or via a short lead, to the axle. On pulling of the cord the axle is rotated and the item is pulled into the storage container and wound round the axle.
Usually the item will be longer than the cord and wound at a smaller diameter; several withdrawals of the cord are likely to be necessary for complete winding of the item.
To remove the item, a free end of the item is pulled, which unwinds the item from the axle, the winding mechanism including its cover rotating with the axle as the item is removed. As the item is pulled from the container, it rotates the axle. This in turn rotates the one way bearing, which rotates the spool, which rotates the cord, which rotates the cover, enabling the whole mechanism to rotate.
Conveniently the one way drive may be a one way bearing.
Preferably the free end of the item can be provided with a cover for the aperture, which closes the aperture and provides an end to pull to remove the item from the container. Alternatively a button or other device can be provided sized to prevent its entry into the container through the aperture, and providing an accessible part of the item to pull for its release.
Typically a finger pull will be provided on the end of the cord for ease of operation. In the preferred embodiment this finger pull can be in the form of a pull ring. The pull ring can be sized to fit over the end of the mechanism cover, and the cover can be provided with an formation for the same.
Preferably the cover for the mechanism is provided with an indentation for attachment of a loop provided on the upper free corner of the item, such that the container and cover act as the handle to the item.
In the preferred embodiment the item is a bag.
To help understanding of the invention, a specific embodiment thereof will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a container according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the container of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross-section through the container of Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a front view of the container of Figure 1 connected to a bag.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 thereshown is a container 2 for receiving an item (not shown) though an aperture 4. The container is of rigid material, typically plastic although metal could be used.
At one end of the container is provided a cover 6 containing a mechanism 8 for winding a item into the container. The container 2 and mechanism 8 are attached to an axle 10 that runs though the centre of both.
The mechanism comprises a one-way bearing 12 attached to the axle 10 and controlling rotation thereof Around the one-way bearing 12 is provided a spool 14 having a cord 16 and finger pull 18. An aperture 20 is provided in the cover 6 through which the cord passes to allow a user to rotate the axle 10 and thus wind the bag 1 around the axle 10 into the container 2.
The finger pull 18 is sized to fit over the end of the cover 6 when not in use.
The end of the cover 21 is shaped to provide a good fit for the finger pull when not in use.
Connecting the spool 14 and the cover 6 is a spring 22. Thus rewinds the cord around the spool when pulling force by a user is released.
In use to wind a bag 1 into the container 2, the finger pull 18 is used to pull the cord 16 to wind the axle 10, which winds the bag around the axle. When the full length of the cord 16 had been extended, the pulling force is released and on action from the spring, the cord is re-wound round the spool, and due to the one-way bearing 12, the axle does not rotate. The cord 16 can thus be repeatedly pulled to wind the bag into the container.
It has been found that by providing a string of approximately 30cm this S provides a comfortable pull length for the average user. With a item size of 40cm square, the bag can be wound into the container with 3 or 4 pulls of the string.
To remove the item from the container, a free end thereof item is pulled, while holding the container. This unwinds the item from around the axle, thereby rotating the axle. The axle rotating causes the spool to rotate (via the bearing), which in turn rotates the cover via the cord. This has been found not to cause a difficulty for the user. With the finger pull 18 fitted on to the end of the cover 6, the mechanism in its cover can rotate without inconveniencing the user.
The container 2 is particularly useful in the storage of a bag, for shopping and the like. However, other items such as banners for football supporters, can also be stored in the container.
Referring now to Figure 4, the bag 1 is attached to the axle 10 by a short cord 24 at one corner 26 and is provided with a cover 28 for the aperture 4 at the opposite corner 26. The cover 28 closes the apertures, and ensures that the corner 26 of the bag does not disappear into the container, making the bag very difficulty to retrieve.
It also provides a grasp to pull to release the bag from the container.
To remove the bag I from the container 2 the user holds the cover 28 in one hand and the container 2 in the other and pulls the cover, unwinding the bag from around the axle. The rotating axle causes the mechanism and cover 6 to rotate about the container 2.
The bag is provided with a loop 32 and the cover is provided with indentations 34 for connection with the loop 32. In this way the container can act as a handle for the bag.
The bag as shown is a plain flat bag, although is can be provided with gussets in the bottom and/or sides for extra space.
The invention is not intended to be restricted to the details of the above-S described embodiment. For instance, the bag can be of any size or design and the container can be sized to fit the bag.
In addition the windup system can be used with blinds and screens that can be rolled onto an axle. In this case the container may not be provided, leaving the blind visibly wrapped around the axle when not deployed. In addition the cover for the mechanism may be housed in the wall, with the cover being or connected to the wall.
