Abstract
A coil spring actuated lawn aerator comprises a plurality of aerating tine mechanisms wherein each mechanism comprises a drive wheel9with integral cams8, an actuating arm6, a cam follower4, a coil spring1, a head unit5having a limiting stop13, attached to the arm6wherein when the cam follower4has reached its lowest point of travel as determined by the limiting stop13, the rotation of the drive wheel9and the action of the coil spring1on the head unit5there exists a gap14between the cam follower4and the cam8prior to the rotational action of the drive wheel9bringing the cam8into contact with the cam follower4.
Description
AN IMPROVEMENT (1) TO COIL SPRING ACTUATED LAWN AERATORS UK Patent Application GB 2 436 511 A reveals a coil spring actuated lawn aerator. Whilst the aerator functions as described in the afore mentioned patent when plunging the tines into the lawn as a function of the coil springs the travel of the cam followers is limited by impacting upon the cams attached to the rotating drive wheels. This said impacting has a detrimental effect upon the drive mechanism since the impact of the cam follower on the rising cam induces a momentary reversal of direction of the drive wheel and thus of the drive mechanism ultimately leading to mechanical failure. This invention embodies an improvement and a resolution to the above mentioned patent application so to eliminate any momentary reversal of direction of the drive wheel and consequent mechanical failure.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Fig.1 transparent' schematic representation of the invention when the actuating arm 6 is at its highest point relative to the central drive axle 11.
Fig.2 transparent' schematic representation of the invention when the actuating arm 6 is at its lowest point relative to the central drive axle 11 having been limited in its travel by the limiting stop device 13.
Fig.3 transparent' schematic representation of the invention when the actuating arm 6 is at its lowest point relative to the central drive axle 11 having been limited in its travel by the limiting stop device 13 and at a point where cam follower 4 meets cam 8 as a factor of the rotation of drive wheel 9.
For clarity in none of the figures above are the power source or the chassis of the machine carrying manifestations of the invention shown.
Referring to the drawings the improvement to the coil spring actuated lawn aerator as revealed in UK Patent Application GB 2 436 511 comprises a limiting stop device 13 which limiting stop device 13 is preferably combined with and an extension to the nylon moulded head units 5 as in this example and which said limiting stop device 13 restricts the downward movement of the actuating arm 6 and attendant cam followers 4 by impact with the central drive axle 11 as in this example the drive wheel 9 with integral cams 8 have said cams 8 so disposed around said drive whee! 9 as to ensure that when the said cam followers 4 have reached their lowest point of travel as determined by the limiting stop device 13 and the action of the coil springs 1 upon the said nylon moulded head units 5 that there exists a gap 14 between the said cam followers 4 and the said cams 8 prior to the rotational action of the said drive wheel 9 bringing the slope of the said cams 8 into contact with the said cam followers 4.
