Abstract

An enclosure 20 for a fan 10, the enclosure comprising an inner housing 22 for enclosing the fan and an outer housing 24, where a number of anti-vibration mounting blocks 28 are disposed between the walls of the inner and outer housing, connecting them. Preferably the inner and/or outer housing has a square or rectangular cross section and the inner housing is formed of metal. The anti-vibration mounting blocks may be formed of elastomeric material and interconnect the walls of the inner and outer housings at spaced apart intervals.

Description

Fan enclosure The present invention relates to an enclosure for a fan in a ventilation or air handling system.
Various acoustic arrangements have been used hitherto to reduce the emission or!breakoutu of noise from the fan casing of a fan mounted in a ventilation or air handling system. Some of these arrangements comprise an enclosure consisting of a single skin of metal to which an acoustically absorbent layer is applied: other arrangements comprise an enclosure made up of a number of sealed panels which enclose acoustic barrier material.
We have now devised an enclosure which provides an improved acoustic performance.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided an enclosure for a fan, the enclosure comprising an inner housing for enclosing the fan, and an outer housing, with acoustically absorbent material disposed between the walls of the inner and outer housings.
Preferably the inner housing and/or the outer housing is formed of metal and may be in the form of a metal box, typically of square or rectangular cross-section.
Preferably the inner housing is connected to the outer housing by a number of mounting members of elastomeric material, serving as anti-vibration mounts. The enclosure may then be devoid of any rigid mechanical interconnection between the two housings, so providing complete structural isolation between the two housings.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings. the single figure of which is a schematic cross-section through an embodiment of fan enclosure in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown the fan of a ventilating or air handling system, the fan casing 10 having an inlet (not shown) and a projecting outlet port 12. The fan is disposed within an enclosure 20, with the outlet port 12 of the fan extending through an aperture in a wall of the enclosure 20: the enclosure is also formed, in another wall, with an aperture for an inlet duct 14; flexible joints or seals 11 are formed around the outlet port 12 and the inlet duct 14, to close the gaps between these and the peripheries of the apertures in the enclosure walls.
The enclosure 20 comprises an inner housing 22 and an outer housing 24, with acoustically absorbent material 26 disposed between the walls of the two housings. In the example shown, the inner and outer housings 22, 24 comprise metal boxes of square or rectangular cross-section. Further, the inner housing 22 is supported by the outer housing by means of a number of anti-vibration mounting blocks 28 which interconnect the walls of the two housings at spaced-apart intervals: the enclosure is devoid of any rigid mechanical interconnection between the two housings, thus providing complete structural isolation. The fan itself is mounted to the inner housing.
It will be noted that the inner housing or box 22 forms an integral structure disposed within the outer housing, which also forms an integral structure.
One wall of each housing is however formed with an opening (not shown) to allow the fan to be to be fitted into the enclosure, and a closure is provided for this opening, the closure comprising two walls or skins separated by acoustically absorbent material.
It will be appreciated that the enclosure which has been described is of simple construction yet provides an effective acoustic barrier against the transmission of noise from the fan.
