Abstract
An apparatus for safely transporting valuables comprises a security case 10 and base member 20. The security case has a handle 12, a lockable lid 13 to access the case contents, and a recess 16 containing releasable locking mechanists 17. The base member has a projecting lock portion 23 configured so as to be receivable in use within the recess and the locking mechanism therein. In use the base member is secured to an object to which the security case is to be secured, and the security case placed on the base member with the projecting lock portion inserted into the recess 16 to be engaged by the locking mechanism whereby the security case is secured to the object. The security case may further comprise a wire 31 that may be secured to an object and which enters the security case through a slot 30 that is sealed by the lid of the security case when it is closed. The apparatus for safely transporting valuables is especially suited for use in vehicles and the security case may be provided with a number of base members, each being permanently secured in a different location.
Description
Title: Security Case and Base Member The present invention relates to a security case and base member.
It is often desirable to transport a case containing valuable items such as laptops, documents, cash, or jewels from one location to another, e.g. in a vehicle. It is known to provide security cases which cannot easily be opened, but opportunistic thieves can easily break into a room or vehicle in which a security case is located and remove it to a distant location, and then force entry into the case using tools if required.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a security case and base member comprising: a) a case having a handle, a lockable lid to access the case contents, and a lock recess supporting a releasable locking mechanism, and b) a base member adapted to be secured to a fixed object, said base member supporting a lock projection adapted to cooperate with the releasable locking mechanism, in use the base member being secured to an object to which the case is to be secured, and the case placed on the base member with the lock projection inserted into the lock recess to be engaged by the locking mechanism, whereby the case is secured to said object.
Preferably the base member is a floor plate adapted to be secured to the floor on an object.
Preferably the base member further comprises an L-shaped projection which engages with a slot on the case. The L-shaped projection may be located at one end of the base and the lock projection is located towards an opposing end of the base.
Preferably the case is rectangular with six sides and the base member is rectangular to cover one bottom side face of the case. Preferably the handle of the case is located on an opposing top side face of the case. Preferably a side side face of the case supports a slot to receive the L-shaped projection.
Preferably the case includes a hinged lid. The lid may include a full length hinge running along substantia!ly the whole of one side of the case.
Preferably a side face includes a single slot with an opening which is sealed upon closure of the lid, said slot adapted to receive a wire having a widened first end, with the second end of the wire secured to an object.
Preferably the locking mechanism is operated by a key in a keyway on the case.
The case may be formed of metai. The base member may be formed of metal.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Referring to the drawings there is shown a security case and base member 1.
A six sided rectangular metal case 10 is provided. Case 10 has a rectangular bottom side face hA, a rectangular top side face 1 1B, and two side side faces I1C,1ID. A handle 12 is provided on top side face 1 lB. A lid 13 is hinged to an edge of bottom side face 1 IA by means of a "piano "style hinge running the length of the bottom side face I IA. The lid 13 allows access the case contents. Lid 13 has a lock with a key way 14 operated by key 15, and is of a type well known in the art.
Case 10 has a recess 16 supporting a releasable locking mechanism 17 of the type used vehicle boots. Locking mechanism with a key way 17 is operated by key 18. Case 10 also has a slot 19 in the bottom of side side face tiC.
A base member in the form of a rectangular metal plate 20 is adapted to be secured to a fixed object such as the floor of a car of a room floor by means of bolts or screws 21 passing through mounting holes 22 in plate 20. Plate 20 supports a lock projection 23 adapted to cooperate with the releasable locking mechanism 17 in case 10. Plate 20 is of a size to cover the bottom side face I IA of the case 10.
Plate 20 further comprises an L-shaped projection 24 which engages with the slot 19 on the case 10. The L-shaped projection is located at one end of the plate 20, and the lock projection is located towards an opposing end of the plate 20.
In use the plate 20 is secured to an object to which the case is to be secured such as the floor of a car of a room floor. The case 10 can be placed on the plate with the lock projection inserted into the lock recess and is automatically engaged by the locking mechanism 17, whereby the case 10 is secured to the object. To remove the case from plate 20, the key 18 is used to unlock the locking mechanism 17.
It is envisaged that numerous base members would be provided for each case. For example a room in a first location would have a plate 20 in the floor, a room in a second location would have a plate 20 in the floor, and a vehicle to transport the case would have a plate 20 in the vehicle floor. The case could thus be stored in the first location, transported to in a vehicle, and then stored in a second location always secured to a plate. A key 18 only is required to remove the case from a plate 20, so a person transporting the case in a vehicle need not have a key, only the donor at the first location and the recipient at the second location need have a key.
This makes the case and base member especially suitable for transport purposes.
The side face I IC includes a single slot 30 with an opening which is sealed upon closure of the lid 13. The slot 30 adapted to receive a wire 31 having a widened first end 32, with the second end of the wire secured using a loop 33 to an object. Thus a person carrying the case can make a temporary fastening of the case, e.g. to a chair or the like, to prevent the case 10 being snatched from the person.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
