Abstract
A safety brake unit 1 for a baby buggy, pushchair, trolley or the like is engaged at all times and must be disengaged before the pushchair, pram, trolley etc. can be moved. The brake mechanism may comprise a central shaft 2, surrounded by a coil spring 4, or the spring may be replaced by a pneumatic mechanism. At the base of the shaft are wedge shaped brake lock inserts 6, which slide into the wheel brake grooves (22, figure 9) to lock the wheels against movement. A brake lever (20, figure 5) may be mounted on the buggy handle and connected to the brake mechanism by cable 16. When the brake lever 20 is released the coil spring pushes the central shaft down and the brake lock inserts into the wheel brake grooves which prevents the wheels from rotating and the pushchair/pram from moving. The brake is disengaged by simply pushing the brake lever forward and holding it against the pushchair, pram or trolley handle.
Description
Pushchair/buggy, pram and trolley safety brake.
Background
This invention relates to a safety brake for pushchair, pram, trolley and other such items.
The problem with currently available brakes on pushchair/buggy, pram and other things such as trolleys is that they are dependent on remembering to engage the brake mechanism either by foot or harni If the user is momentarily distracted eg. by another accompanying sibling and lets go of the pushchair or pram, there exist a risk of the pram/pushchair wondering off by the motion of the sitting child rocking back and forth or on an incline, unless of course, the user remembers to engage the brake. In such situatIons bow many people actually remember to apply the brake?
Statement of invention
To overcome this deficiency, the proposed new safety-brake will automatically lock the wheels and prevent the pushchair or pram from moving if the user let go of the handle, thereby eliminating the risk of the pram/pushchair wondering off The proposed new brake system is fail-safe and instinctive because it is In a state of permanent engagement and requires the user to disengage It before the stroller, pram or trolley can be moved.
It is disengaged by simply and effortlessly moving the brake lever (1) forward and holding it with the stroller or pram handle, and the brake is again automatically engaged once the brake lever is released. As an additional safety feature to make It child-safe, a safety button can be added which must be pressed in order to enable the brake release lever to be moved forward.
Since the proposed brake system is self-locking, it makes it more intrinsically safe than the currently available memory-dependant hand and foot operated system, and is therefore suitable in situations in which safety is paramount. Moreover, this brake system can be used on other manually operated trolleys such as the Royal Mail postman's trolley used to carry large quantity of mail on delivery rounds.
hitroduction to drawings An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings (not to scale): * figure 1 shows brake unit according to the invention; and * figure 2 shows top view of brake unit; and * flgure 3 shows bottom view of the brake unit (the gap between the cenbal shaft and the case is for illustration purpose only to show the position of the inner ball bearings); and * figure 4 shows brake unit according to invention with an alternative telescopic sleeve for the coil spring stability; and * figure 5 shows brake lever in its neutral resting position and * figure 6 shows side view of brake lever; and * figure 7 shows current brake system; and * figureS shows current brake being engaged by foot; and * figure 9 shows wheels with biake-engagement grooves.
Detailed Description
The invention will now be described solely by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings: figures 1-9 The brake unit 1 contains a central shaft 2 with a shaft stopper 3 which is at all times pushed down by the tension of the coil spring 4 surrounding the shaft resting against metal plate 5. At the base of the shaft is wedge shaped brake locks 6 which slides in to the wheel brake grooves 22. The shaft 2 is connected to the brake release lever 20 via the cable 16.
To minimise internal friction and help the shaft move smoothly and effortlessly and prolong the life of the brake system, ball bearings are placed at strategic points 8, 9.
Where there is one wheel on either side, as opposed to two, then one brake-lock-wedge (6) is fitted. To prevent the shaft from twisting and make it more stable, channel are hewn oneithersidelOandtwometaistripnmners 11 areplacedinthechannelsandformpart of the outer case. To prevent warping and maintain integrity of the spring, short sleeve is provided at top and bottom 12 & 13. Alternatively, the coil spring can be housed in a telescopic sleeve 19.
The inside of the brake unit is accessed by removing the top cover 14 which is held in place by a screw 15 on either side of the unit. The central shaft can be removed by unclipping the inner cable 7 and removing the shaft-stopper pin 3.
To move the pushchair/pram from stationery, the brake release handle 20 is pushed against the pushchair's handle, this retract the central shaft 2 up into the brake unit via the cable and also raise the brake locks from the wheel brake grooves and allows the wheels to rotate and the pram/buggy or trolley to move and, at the same time the coil spring 4 is compressed against 5. As long as this non-brake-engaging position is maintained, the pushchair and pram is free to move.
When the brake disengagement lever is released the force of the compressed spring pushes the central shaft down and at the same time inserts the little brake-locks 6 into the wheel brake grooves 22 This is the permanent brake engagement position of the pram, buggy or trolley when not in use. An additional child-proof safety button 21 can be added which must be pressed in order to enable the brake release lever to be moved forward ie disengage the brake.
The brake unit is mounted on to the frame of the pram, pushchair or trolley above the rear wheels using the mounting plate 17 and bolts 18 at the time of vehicle manuthcture.
Claims (4)
- Claims 1. A brake system in which the brake is engaged at all times for safety and, must be disengaged before the pushchair, pram or trolley can be moved and consists of a brake unit 1, containing a central shaft 2, surrounded by a coil spring 4. At the base of the shaft is wedge shaped brake lock inserts 6, which slides into the wheel brake grooves 22 to lock the wheels.
- 2. A pushchair, pram and trolley brake according to claim 1, in which an additional safety button is incorporated which must be pressed in order to enable the brake release lever to be moved forward.
- 3. A pushchair, pram and trolley brake according to claim 1, in which as an alternative, to provide structural support stability and prevent warping, the coil spring is enclosed in a telescopic sleeve 19.
- 4. A pushchair, pram and trolley brake according to claim 1, in which the coiled spring is replaced by a pneumatic mechanism.
