Abstract

246,741. Titterington, M. M. Aug. 17, 1925. Clinometers.-An instrument particularly intended for indicating the longitudinal inclination of aircraft &c. comprises a pendulum to which is connected a gyroscope mounted for precession about an axis at an angle to the axis of the pendulum in order to compensate for the deviation of the pendulum produced by the acceleration accompanying inclined movement. The pendulum 12 is secured to a spindle 13 pivoted in the casing 25, and the upper end of the pendulum is connected by a link 26 to a frame 22 within which the gyroscope 21 rotates on a horizontal axis, the frame being pivoted about the vertical axis 23, 24 in the casing 25. A pointer 41 secured to the spindle 13 indicates the inclination of the craft. The pendulum is damped by a dash pot 31, the piston 32 being connected by a link 33 to a lever 34 secured to the spindle 13. A rod 51 secured to the spindle carries an adjust. able counterweight 52 to balance the moving parts. The gyroscope is driven by air drawn through the casing by a Venturi tube &c. 61, the inlet nozzle 57 being provided with a valve 58.
