Abstract

A device for stabilising wall hung picture frames comprises a rubber bumper with an adhesive applied to one surface. The adhesive bonds the device to the picture frame and the rubber bumper is left in contact with the wall. A hole may run through the bumper allowing it to deform and adapt to the contact surface.

Description

Picture Frame Wall Grip This invention relates to a device, of which two would be required to form a sufficient grip between the two lower corners of a hanging picture, mirror or any other type of framed or mounted item, & the wall against which it is suspended in order to prevent lateral tilting of that item.
Many homeowners have objects placed on the internal walls of their homes; a proportion of these may comprise free hanging mirrors, paintings, prints & photographs. Such items, annoyingly, often tilt owing to a variety of reasons, perhaps a gust of air or whilst being dusted clean or simply as a result of gravity over a period of time. The picture frame wall grip aids considerably in preventing this tilt tendency of any single suspended wall item by virtue of its unique design & appropriate placement behind any such item.
Figure 1 illustrates the plan view of a single picture frame wall grip.
Figure 2 illustrates the side elevation of a single picture frame wall grip.
Figure 3 illustrates the end elevation of a single picture frame wall grip.
The picture frame wall grip is produced as a soft, clear, rubber composition: its width size is approximately 5/16", its length is approximately 3/2" & its height approximately 3/16"; the hole 3 running through its entire length is approximately 1/16" in diameter & serves to improve grip when pressed against a surface by allowing the device to adapt more effectively to that surface by means of maximizing its contact area as a result of this collapsible' cavity: see figure 6. The base 2, which is the long, flat surface of the picture frame wall grip, is coated with a strong adhesive intended to bind it, preferably horizontally, to either one of the two lower corners of amount, stretcher or frame 4 of the desired item. The tacky, curved section 1 of a picture frame wall grip sufficiently, but gently, attaches to a wall surface, thus resisting movement & preventing damage to the wall covering (emulsion, wallpaper &c.) should its removal be necessary. Two picture frame wall grips 6 & 7 would be required (one for each of the two lower corners) for any single item to be wall mounted: this ensures greater reliability & stability, considerably reducing proneness to tilting or movement of any kind.
A framed oil painting, for example, once suspended against a wall 8 by means of a cord 5, will immediately lean forward, away from that wall, at its top end 4; conversely this leaning tendency creates an inward force, toward the wall, at its lower end. If the aforementioned frame is appropriately fitted with a pair of picture frame wall grips 6 & 7, then this bottom end inward force will pressure them against the wall surface, & hence create a grip between the lower frame section of the oil painting & the wall against which it is mounted: see figure 5.
Picture frame wall grips also give rise to a narrow clearance 9 between the lower part of a suspended article & the wall against which it mounted; this serves to prevent the unpleasant wall marks often caused as a result of contact between two such surfaces.

Claims (10)

  1. Claims I. A picture frame wall grip comprising a means of attachment to the back of a framed, or otherwise supported item intended for wall mounting, for the purpose of preventing its lateral movement or tilt, & maintaining the desired position of placement of that item with respect to the upright surface against which it is suspended by means of gripping' that surface.
  2. 2. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 1, in which the means of attachment is achieved by its long, flat, adhesive coated, surface.
  3. 3. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 1, in which the means of gripping' an upright surface is achieved by virtue of its soft, tacky, curved, rubber surface.
  4. 4. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 3, in which the curved, rubber surface moulds itself to a surface against which it is pressed.
  5. 5. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 4, in which the moulding quality improves grip.
  6. 6. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 3, in which the curved, rubber surface can be detached with ease from any surface to which it connects, thus preventing damage to that surface.
  7. 7. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 4, in which the curved, rubber surface reverts back to its original shape when pressure placed upon it is relieved.
  8. 8. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 3, in which the curvature of the rubber surface ensures an equally effective grip distribution irrespective of variations in the angle at which pressure is exerted.
  9. 9 A picture frame wall grip according to claim I, in which a clearance will exist between the lower section of the item & the upright surface against which it will be mounted.
  10. 10. A picture frame wall grip according to claim 8, in which grip effectiveness is further improved owing to a hole running through its entire length.
