Abstract

A vehicle accelerator pedal has a diametrically magnetised magnet 5 mounted directly into a pedal arm pivot shaft 4 and a hall effect sensor on PCB 6 in an outer casing 3 sealed against the outer surface of a pedal mounting bracket 2. The outer casing 3 holds the electronic components, and the mounting bracket forms the rear of the sensor casing to produce an environmentally sealed electronics package. The bracket 2 can be injection moulded in one piece including support bearings. Thus a separate sealed position sensor and rotor is not required and backlash reduced.

Description

Description
The present invention relates to a novel design of a motor vehicle pedal which eliminates the need for a sensor rotor. The pedal structure incorporates a non contacting Hall Effect type position sensor into the structure of accelerator pedal. An accelerator pedal typically consists of a mounting bracket (2) and a pivoting pedal arm (1) which the driver actuates with his foot in order to control the engine speed of the vehicle. The pedal mounting bracket (2) forms the rear section of the sensor casing. A diametrically magnetised magnet (5) is mounted directly into the pedal pivot shaft (4) and a hall sensor mounted on a PCB (6) is then used to measure changes in magnetic flux density, or flux vector as the pedal is depressed causing the magnet in the pedal pivot shaft to rotate. The outer sensor casing (3) is then sealed against the outer surface of the pedal structure (2) so that the sensor electronics and pedal share the same structural elements.
