Abstract

A self contained, aerator and mixer for applying live macro and micro organisms as plant protection products, through rain-gun, boom and drip irrigation systems. The concept is to continually mix and aerate, using a closed circuit, a holding tank for live macro and micro organisms prior to application through an irrigation system using the power from the main water flow, negating the use of an independent or additional power supply. The water is caused to flow around the closed circuit by a dual turbine arrangement in which a first turbine is driven by a second turbine which itself is driven by the main water flow.

Description

A self contained, aerator and mixer for applying live macro and micro organisms as plant protection products, through rain-gun, boom and drip irrigation systems
Description
Background
There are two main factors influencing the development of the new device.
There is an ever increasing requirement to find alternatives for chemical pesticides, some of which are biologically based controls. The storage, handling and application of live organisms as biological pesticides can be considerably more complex than with that of more standard agro-chemicals, leading to the necessary development of new methods and specialised equipment.
Many biological controls also have benefits not found in the use of chemicals such as: no risk of phytotoxicty; no harvest interval (that period between last application to the crop and harvest for human consumption); and no toxic residue risk. Therefore, accuracy of application is not paramount as with chemical pesticides, potentially allowing the use of irrigation systems as methods of delivery.
Using irrigation applications as a delivery system for fertiliser and disease controls instead of the more traditional tractor based approach, can give considerable savings in fuel, time and damage to soil structure.
Principle The three key areas of concern addressed and overcome are: 1. To maintain an even distribution of micro or macro organisms in a holding/storage tank prior to delivery, a continual mixing is necessary during the irrigation application. This may, for example, be for more than 10 hrs where a rain-gun is used to apply I 8-20m1 of water over 2 hectares or more.
2. The aeration of the water in the holding tank to maintain viability of the living organisms over several hours.
3. To access the free' energy in the main water pipe being pumped to the irrigator, negating the need for an additional energy supply to aerate and/or mix the holding tank solution, such as a solar panel or generator powering an electric motor.
The storage and mixing tank solution is continually pumped round a closed circuit by a turbine which is powered by a second turbine turning on a shared shaft. The second turbine is turned by a second circuit branched off the main water flow. To cause flow round the circuit, a venturi in the main pipe generates a partial vacuum at the outflow of the second circuit.
To aerate the solution, two venturi are included in the closed circuit.
