Abstract

A receptacle such as a cool box or bag 1 for carrying shopping is disclosed. Said receptacle comprising; a load carrying body 3, carrying handles 5, a temperature sensor to generate a signal indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body and display means 13 for receiving the signal and displaying the temperature. The display means may be provided on the exterior of the load carrying body and may display a numerical value. The receptacle may be thermally insulated. The receptacle may take the form of a foldable or furlable bag or a rigid walled lunch box.

Description

A RECEPTACLE FOR CARRYING SHOPPING
The present invention relates to a receptacle for carrying shopping and particularly but not exclusively relates to a receptacle for carrying shopping such as food, picnic items or lunches for example.
It is known to provide a receptacle for carrying shopping such as a cool box or plastic/fabric shopping bag for transporting items from a supermarket for example. Such items might include food items can be bought in a chilled, frozen or heated condition and it is desirable to be able to maintain those items at a temperature similar to that in which they are supplied. Even if the temperature cannot be maintained it would be desirable to be able to determine the temperature of the items carried in the receptacle so as to be able to assess whether or not those items are still safe to consume, and/or whether or not the contents should be moved for example to a temperature controlled container. For example it is well known that the temperature of sea food such as prawns must be maintained below a certain level in order to avoid subsequent consumption of the prawns causing food poisoning or the like.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a receptacle for carrying shopping, comprising a load carrying body and a carrying handle, a temperature sensor being provided to generate a signal indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body, display means being provided to receive the signal and display the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body to a user.
Preferably the display means is provided on the exterior of the load carrying body.
Preferably the receptacle comprises thermal insulation operative to minimise heat transfer to and from the interior of the load carrying body.
The load carrying body may comprise substantially rigid walls and base.
The receptacle may therefore comprise a cool box or lunch box.
Alternatively the load carrying body may comprise substantially collapsible walls and base. The walls and base may be furlable. The receptacle may therefore comprise a bag. The load carrying body of the bag may be formed from woven or non-woven material.
The display means may be operative to display a numeral indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body.
The display means may alternatively or additionally be operative to display another indicia indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body, such as a colour for example.
The display means may alternatively or additional comprise an audible display operative to emit an audible noise indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body. The audible noise may be emitted when the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body reaches a certain predetermined threshold.
Other aspects of the present invention may include any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
The present invention may be carried into practice in various ways, but embodiments will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle for carrying shopping in the form of a bag in accordance with the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a receptacle for carrying shopping in the form of a modified bag in accordance with the present invention; and Figures 3a to 3c are examples of three different embodiments of display means comprising part of a receptacle for carrying shopping in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a receptacle for carrying shopping in the form of a shopping bag 1 is shown comprising a load carrying body 3 and two carrying handles 5. In this example the load carrying body 3 is formed from a non-woven fabric material that is collapsible and may be furled for ease of transport. The handles 5 in this example each comprise a respective straight rod retained in pockets formed at the top of the front and rear panels 7, 9 of the bag 1.
The front and rear panels 7, 9 and/or the side panels 11 are thermally insulated by way of pockets on the panels 7, 9, 11 filled with a thermally insulating material such as a foam material.
A temperature sensor in the form of a temperature probe (not shown) is provided to measure the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body 3 and the probe may therefore be located inside the body 3 or inside one of the pockets of thermal insulation. A power source such as a battery may be provided if required.
The temperature sensor generates a signal indicative of the temperature of the interior of the body 3 and this signal is displayed on display means 13 provided on the exterior of the bag 1, for example on the front panel 7. The temperature sensor may be located any where on the body 3 or the handles 5 as required.
The display means 13 may comprise any suitable, low power display capable of displaying indicia indicative of the temperature of the body 3.
The indicia may comprise a digital numeral as shown in Figure 1 or may comprise a series of sequentially illuminating bars as shown in Figure 2.
The numeral and the bars may be used separately or together and either may comprise additional indicia such as colour to highlight the temperature of the body 7. For example the numeral or bars might glow orange or red to indicate the temperature was too high.
Referring additionally to Figure 3a, the display means 13 can comprise a set of sequentially illuminating bars each of a different colour. The bars may also indicate a numeral of the temperature of the interior of the body 7, the temperatures of the other bars being otherwise invisible.
Alternatively, with reference to Figure 3b, the display means 13 may comprise a set of increasing temperature numerals that are permanently visible and superimposed on coloured bars, only the coloured bar that corresponds to the actual temperature of the body 7 being visible. With reference to Figure 3c, the temperature numerals may be displayed in °C or °F or both, as required.
The receptacle may take any desired form in terms of shape, function and construction and may, for example, comprise a cool box or bag, a lunch box, or a plastics, leather or fabric bag.

Claims (12)

  1. CLAIMS1. A receptacle for carrying shopping, comprising a load carrying body and a carrying handle, a temperature sensor being provided to generate a signal indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body, display means being provided to receive the signal and display the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body to a user.
  2. 2. The receptacle of claim 1 wherein the display means is provided on the exterior of the load carrying body.
  3. 3. The receptacle of claim 1 or claim 2 comprising thermal insulation operative to minimise heat transfer to and from the interior of the load carrying body.
  4. 4. The receptacle of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the load carrying body comprises substantially rigid walls and base.
  5. 5. The receptacle of claim 4 comprising a cool box or lunch box.
  6. 6. The receptacle of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the load carrying body comprises substantially collapsible walls and base.
  7. 7. The receptacle of claim 6 wherein the walls and base are furlable.
  8. 8. The receptacle of claim 6 or claim 7 comprising a bag.
  9. 9. The receptacle of any one of the preceding claims wherein the display means is operative to display a numeral indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body.
  10. 10. The receptacle of any one of the preceding claims wherein the display comprises an audible display operative to emit an audible noise indicative of the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body.
  11. 11. The receptacle of claim 10 wherein the audible noise is emitted by the audible display when the temperature of the interior of the load carrying body reaches a certain predetermined threshold.
  12. 12. A receptacle substantially as described herein and as shown in the accompanying drawings.
