Abstract
A plenum chamber or box for a ventilation terminal that is collapsible, lightweight, easy to fit, easy to transport and hard to damage during transport and installation is manufactured out of a flexible material that can be flattened for transport and 'sprung' into shape for installation, and can be stretched over the neck of the ventilation terminal and ductwork removing the need for additional fixings. The chamber or box can be made of SBR rubber, and the stretch portion can be conical and allow cutting to suit the pipework size.
Description
Introduction
We currently manufacture plenum boxes for ventilation systems. These plenum boxes are manufactured in sheet steel or vacuum formed using high impact polystyrene. These products have their disadvantages as follows Metal Boxes: Time consuming to manufacture Heavy construction Bulky to store Bulky to transport Expensive to manufacture Require painting after manufacture Rigid construction, fine tolerances for installation HIPS Boxes: Bulky to store Bulky to transport Break if mishandled in transport Break if mishandled during installation Large amount of reject product during manufacture Expensive tooling required Proposal We would like to develop and manufacture a plenum box for the ventilation industry that is collapsible, lightweight, easy to transport and cannot be damaged by mis-handling during transport and installation. It is our understanding of the industry that there is no such product in existence.
The product would be manufactured using our existing vacuum forming operation using SBR materials (Synthetic Blended Rubber). Using this material the product can be flattenedlfolded for transport and spring' into shape when required on the installation. In addition to the proposal we would also like to manufacture the product with a reducing cone. This cone could be cut to the size of the ductwork and used for several sizes of pipework.
Another benefit to using this product would be that the plenum boxes would be flexible to obstructions such as wiring, structural steels, piping, conduit, etc and would mould' around the obstructions.
This is a product that I have had in mind for some time, but am not willing to spend time and money in developing without any patent protection for the product. When in production, due to the reduced costs of transport we feel this product could be marketed to a world wide consumer base.
I include in this documentation photographs of existing products, along with sketch proposals.

Summary:
I believe this product would be suited to a Patent as there are several unique features of this product Collapsible -It is our calculations that over 60 products would fit in the same box as 7 conventional plenum boxes. This means lower transport costs and hence, less fuel used.
Unbreakable -Due to the pliable materials, the plenum boxes would be impervious to damage caused by mis-handling.
Better for the environment -Currently the plenum boxes are made from Polystyrene, where the new product would be made from a rubber derivative.
Less Stock-As the plenum box neck would fit many sizes of ductwork, stockists and distributors could keep less stock and the stock they do keep takes less room.
Pliable Installation -Will fit around obstructions on site, such as pipes, conduit, etc. Claim
Claims (5)
- I) A flexible ventilation plenum chamber to fit onto a ventilation terminal allowing the product to be packed flat during transport, have a self supporting shape during installation and have a stretch fit neck onto the ventilation terminal.
- 2) A flexible ventilation plenum chamber according to claim 1, in which the rubberised construction of the product allows for the product to be squashed down for transport and packaging purposes.
- 3) A flexible ventilation plenum chamber according to claim I, in which the rubberised construction of the product allows for a stretchable neck which will fix directly to the ventilation terminal without means of additional unsightly fixings.
- 4) A flexible ventilation plenum chamber according to claim 1, in which the rubberised construction of the product removes the possibility of product damage during transport, storage and installation.
- 5) A flexible ventilation plenum chamber according to claim 1, in which the rubberised construction of the product allows for the product to retains its original shape during unpacking and installation. * S. * . * ** . * * S * S * S. S. *S 5. * .s S.. J S. S * ,S
