Abstract

A water wheel for generating electricity comprises a floating barrel with chevron shaped paddles around its circumference. The paddles are thus inclined at an angle to the axis of the barrel so that they enter and leave the water smoothly as it rotates. The barrel may have sealed permanent magnet generators using planetary gearing (figure 2) mounted in recesses at either end of the barrel. The barrel may be supported by stub axles or a through axle, and may be supported by a harness 13 pivoted 14 to an anchor point 16. The power cable 15 may run inside the frame 16.

Description

Hydro Electric Barrel This is a floating barrel that can generate electricity when anchored in deep or shallow flowing water.
The barrel moulded in one piece of plastic with its Chevron paddle treads and its integral permanent magnet generators, making this a relatively light weight assembly for transportation and change of location. In this configuration each paddle surface is the width of the barrel but is relatively not very deep giving the ability to operate in shallow water The chevron shaped paddle tread gives the barrel the ability to rotate about its horizontal axes in fast flowing water, entering the water smoothly and re-surfacing with out lifting any of the water. The merit of this design eliminates the down force and bow wave in front of the barrel when it rotates at same speed as the flow of water.
It is to be understood that the barrel can have more or less than the 14 chevron paddles shown in Fig I as it does not always follow to scale.
Fig I is showing the complete Barrel with its chevron shaped paddles.
The paddle surface I and wedge area 2 tapering into the bottom edge of the next paddle surface. The barrel would be rotationally moulded in one piece of plastic with the recesses 3 at each end. Encapsulated nuts would be moulded in to the barrel ready to accept the sealed casing 4.
Fig 2 shows the permanent magnet generator 7 magnet disc 11 bearing assembly 8 and waterproof seal 12 that could include an optional planetary gear box 6 enclosed in the sealed casing 4. The outer perimeter of the sealed casing 4 has slots 9 that allow the water through that flows down the ends of the barrel for extra cooling of the permanent magnet generators The complete assembly Fig 2 is supported by the fixed stub-axle 10 Alternatively the two generator assemblies could be supported with one axle all through the barrel.
An option of a low pressure valve could be installed in the barreL It is also to be understood that the barrel could be fabricated in Fibre Glass, Steel or Aluminium. Fig3
The harness 13 has two bearings 14 that allow the barrel to float up and down on high or low water. Anchor point 16 could have the power cable 15 running down the inside as a safety feature.
It is obvious that the design method of anchoring and harnessing the barrel can be made in many different ways, depending on its location.
Especially if it was located in a tidal estuary as the barrel would have to swing round 180 degrees.
