Abstract
A manual shaving razor comprises spheroidal articulation of the blade head 3 on the handle 1 to provide freedom of movement in multiple directions when in use, wherein the articulation is dampened by one or more flexible elastic connections 6 between the handle 1 and the blade head 2. The spheroidal articulation may be provided by a ball and socket joint 4, or a live hinge (5, figure 7). In one preferred embodiment, the flexible elastic connection 6 comprises a membrane or hood for even distribution of pressure along the blade 3. In alternative embodiments, two or more flexible spline members (7, figure 7) or a median flexible fin (8, figure 6) may be used instead.
Description
Articulating Manual Razor This invention relates to a device to allow a manual razor blade to articulate in a controlled manner within three degrees of freedom in relation to a handle, whilst in use.
Background
When shaving, it has become accepted that a closer shave can be had if the blade or blade cartridge is able to swivel, following the contours of the skin.
However, conventional swivel head blades only allow movement about one axis, usually parallel to the blade. The cost of the blade cartridge has greatly increased to allow even this limited range of movement.
Furthermore, on uneven skin there is a risk that the razor does not maintain even contact and pressure over the length of' the blade. This results, not only in an inconsistent quality of shave, but could also result in poor shave comfort, and even abrade the skin.
If the blade head is unable to rotate on the handle in any other than one axis, the pressure of the blade on the skin is less controllable, resulting in an uneven shaving experience.
In attempts to overcome these problems, various razors have been proposed that have a shaving blade head which rotates in some fashion relative to the handle, allowing some movement in addition to the now common swivel feature. These razors can either be pre-set by the user and locked in a position for use, or allow movement during use by employing a complicated, impractical or expensive mechanism.
The joint between the handle and the blade head in these razors is formed by use of common systems or mechanisms, for example (but not limited to); a ball joint, a universal joint, a spigot fitted to a spherical bush, a live hinge, or a combination of linear axes.
However it is still preferable that the blade head should not be able to rotate in an uncontrolled fashion, in which case the blade could present to the skin at an inappropriate angle.
Statement of 1nventon
This invention concerns a manual shaving razor comprising spheroidal articulation of the blade head on the handle to provide freedom of movement in roll pitch and yaw and any combination thereof when in use wherein the articulation is damped by one or more flexible elastic connections between the handle and the blade head.
The Invention, and its variants, will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing of the invention featuring an articulated joint between the handle and the blade head, and a flexible membrane or hood.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the invention showing a handle and a flexible membrane or hood.
Figure 3 is a sectional side elevation showing the invention, featuring a ball and socket joint between the handle and the blade head.
Figure 4 is an isometric view of the invention, from the front and below featuring a variant of the invention using a flexible membrane or hood.
Figure 5 is an isometric view of the invention, from the back and above featuring a variant of the invention using a flexible membrane or hood.
Figure 6 is an isometric view of the invention, from the back and above featuring a variant of the invention using a flexible fin.
Figure 7 is an isometric view of the invention, from the back and above featuring a variant of the invention using flexible splines and a live hinge joint.
The following description can be mad in relation to each of the figures listed above.
A handle (1) is attached to a blade head (2) by means of a joint which might be a ball and socket joint (4) or a live hinge (5). The blade head (2) not only carries a blade cartridge (3) but also is attached to the flexible membrane or hood (6) the bottom of which is attached to the handle (1). The flexible membrane or hood (6) might be substituted by two or more flexible spline members (7) or a median flexible fin (8). The blade head may include a flush through aperture (9) and accommodation for one or more detail blades (10). The handle (1) or blade head (2) may also include a buffer feature (1 1), to limit articulation.
Claims (7)
- Claims 1. A manual shaving razor comprising spheroidal articulation of the blade head on the handle to provide freedom of movement in roll pitch and yaw and any combination thereof when in use wherein the articulation is damped by one or more flexible elastic connections between the handle and the blade head.
- 2 A manual shaving razor according to claim 1 in which any flexible elastic connections are separate to the articulation mechanism.
- 3. A manual shaving razor according to claim 2 in which the flexible elastic connections are arranged in order to more evenly distribute pressure along the length of the blade in contact to the skin during shaving.
- 4. A manual shaving razor according to claim 3 in which the flexible elastic connections are arranged in order to return the blade head to a neutral position when is no longer in contact with the skin.
- 5. A manual shaving razor according to claim 3 in which the maximum limit of the articulation is established by a buffer feature.Amendments to the claims have been filed as foHows: Claims A manual shaving razor handle with an integral joint providing three-dimensional rotational deflection of an integrated blade cartridge carrier about a physical centre point or theoretical centre point during shaving, relative to a grip part of the handle, and which has one or more stahilising members, made of a suitably flexible resilient material or structure, separate to the rotation joint but attached to the grip part of the handle at one end and fixed to the blade cartridge carrier at the other end and designed and positioned such that there is suitably distributed resistance to the rotational deflection of the blade cartridge carrier to react against the pressure which is applied during shaving, ensuring consistent and suitable contact between the area to be shaved and the shaving surface of a razor blade cartridge, when fitted to the blade cartridge carrier.2. A manual shaving razor handle according to claim 1 wherein the integral joint that provides the three-dimensional rotational centre can be of the types coinnionly available, for example a ball and socket joint, a universal joint, or a live hinge.3 A manual shaving razor handle according to claim 1 wherein a disposable razor blade cartridge can be attached to the razor blade cartridge carrier, such that the disposable razor blade cartridge is held rigidly to the blade cartridge carrier for shaving.4. A manual shaving razor handle according to claim 1 wherein a razor blade cartridge can be integral to the razor blade cartridge carrier, such that the razor blade cartridge is held rigidly to the blade cartridge carrier for shaving.5. A manual shaving razor handle according to claim I wherein the joint between the grip part of the handle and the blade cartridge carrier is central to the width of the blade cartridge carrier, and is offset from the lateral centreline of the blade cartridge carrier.
- 6. A manual shaving razor handle according to claim i in which the stabilising members are Q arranged in order to return the blade head to a neutral position when it is no longer in contact with the skin.
- 7. A manual shaving razor handle according to claim 1 in which the maximimi limits of the C) rotational deflection may be established by a buffer feature. (\j
