Abstract
A collar shaping device 10 for a garment having a collar. The device comprises an elongate deformable body 12 for concealment beneath a collar and a plurality of space support elements 14 which extend laterally from the body and which, in use, support the collar. The body 12 may be bent by hand into a curved form to set the shape of the collar. The body may be lengthened by adding an extension (118, fig 3), and may terminate in an adornment (120 fig 3).
Description
Collar Shaping Device The present invention relates to a collar shaping device which is concealable beneath a collar of a garment, such as a shirt, and also bendable to set a shape of the collar.
Devices for holding a shape of a collar are known, However, they are manufactured in a pre-determined fixed shape and have no means for adjusting this shape after manufacture.
This means that different collar shaping devices are required for varying collar sizes and types. By way of example, pins are known which are inserted along a front edge of a collar in order to prevent the tips or points of the collar from curling.
Prior devices for holding a shape of a collar cannot be adjusted in use to compensate for the different neck and shoulder shape of the wearer. They also cannot be adjusted to allow the wearer to choose the style of collar set that they require. For example collar high or low with open neck open or closed.
Prior devices for holding a shape of a collar are also not successful at remaining concealed beneath a collar, and will typically slip into view during use.
There also exist devices for holding a shape of a collar for use during manufacture, storage and display of garments. Such devices include cardboard and plastic liners and cardboard and plastic inserts, However, these devices are not designed for use during wearing of the garment. They are also likely to be visible during use, The present invention seeks to provide a solution to these problems.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a collar shaping device for a garment having a collar, the device comprising an elongate deformable body for concealment beneath a collar, and two spaced support elements extending laterally of the deformable body and which in use support the deformable body beneath the collar, the deformable body being bendable by hand into a curved form to set a shape of a collar.
Preferable and/or optional features of the invention are set forth in claims 2 to 19, inclusive.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided a garment having a collar and in combination with a collar shaping device in accordance with the first aspect of the invention, the garment including at least one opening beneath the collar to receive at least a portion of the collar shaping device.
Preferably, the said opening is adapted to receive one said support element.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment of a collar shaping device, in accordance with the first aspect of the present invention; Figure 2 shows the collar shaping device in use; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of a second embodiment of a collar shaping device, in accordance with the first aspect of the invention and with adornments attached thereon; and Figure 4 shows a perspective view of a third embodiment of a collar shaping device, in accordance with the first aspect of the invention and with a friction element attached thereon.
Referring firstly to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a collar shaping device which comprises a substantially C-shaped elongate bendable body 12 of an approximate length to allow it to fit around a neck of a user whilst remaining concealed under a collar of a garment being worn. In this embodiment, the body 12 is formed from a metal wire and has three roughly equally spaced support elements 14 which extend laterally relative to the body 12. The support elements 14 are formed by bending the wire into elongate loops or lobes. A length of each loop or lobe substantially matches a depth of the collar.
The body 12 is deformable to enable the shape of the device 10 to be set by a user by hand.
It also has sufficient rigidity that it retains or substantially retains its shape during wear.
The plastic nature of the material of the body 12 allows it to be reshaped, thereby enabling use with any collar of any size.
In use, the collar shaping device 10 is located between the upstanding portion of the collar and the turn down portion of the collar, so as to be concealed therebetween. The shape of the body 12 is adjusted by the user to give the desired opening and shape of the collar in substantially the horizontal plane and relative to the medial line of a user's torso, being in the medial I lateral direction. The in use support elements 14 act to support the collar in an upright position by abutting or substantially abutting a user's shoulder or collar bone region, but also provide a fulcrum about which the body 12 is pivotable. The user can thus adjust the direction or orientation of the support elements 14, as well as their lengths by adjusting the angles of bending. This allows adjustment of the positioning and shape of the collar in also a substantially vertical plane, being a superior I inferior direction of the user's torso, as well as in an anterior / posterior direction and angles therebetween.
Referring to Figure 3 of the drawings, there is shown a second embodiment of a collar shaping device 110. The collar shaping device 110 is substantially the same as that of the first embodiment. As such, like references are used for like parts with a prefix of 1' added,
and further detailed description is omitted.
In this embodiment, ends 116 of the C-shaped elongate bendable body 112 include adapters 118 for extending the length of the body 112. Each adapter 118 is releasably slidable onto a respective end of the body 112. The adapters 118 may be retained in place by either an interference fit, and/or by being positively engagable with the body via a protuberance or pip locating in a recess or over a ridge.
In this embodiment, the adapters 118 also include adornment elements 120 which in use lie or project externally of the collar to provide decorative collar styles.
Further adornment elements may also be provided separately of the adapters 118, and in this case, these adornment elements may connect magnetically, for example, through the collar material to the body 112 and/or support elements 114.
Referring to Figure 4, there is shown a third embodiment of a collar shaping device 210.
This collar shaping device 210 is substantially the same as that of the first embodiment. As such, like references are used for like parts with a prefix of 2' added, and further detailed
description is omitted.
In this case, a friction element 222 is provided, preferably in the form of a strip of flexible elastomeric or rubberised material. The friction element 222 may be attached either permanently, for example by bonding, or temporarily to the body 212 of the device 210. A temporary fitting could involve a clip mechanism or an aperture on the friction element 222 which forms a close fit when slid onto the body 212. The friction element 222 aids in preventing or limiting rotational or sliding movement of the in use device 210 into a visible position.
In a modification to the above described embodiments, the collar shaping device may be held in place by the use of openings, rings, eyelets or magnets under or on the collar of the garment. At either end of the collar these openings could be pockets for further support of the ends of the device 10.
In a further modification, the support elements can be independently connectable to the body, for example, by a clip mechanism or by an opening of the correct size to allow them to be engagable with the body. If the support elements are slidable on the body, the location of the support elements may be varied to suit the user. 5.
Although the body of the collar shaping device described above is preferably a flexible and deformable wire, the body can be formed from a strip of flexible deformable material, for example plastics or metal. The support elements can be connectable or integrally formed as one-piece with the body.
Although three lateral support elements are described, two or more than three can be included as necessity dictates.
Although the deformable body is substantially C-shaped, it may be sold or provided in other shapes or forms, whereby a user forms the body by hand into the required curved form for use.
Itisthuspossibletoprovideacollarshapingdevicewhich, duetothedefonnablenatureof the body, may be reshaped repeatedly allowing a user to -the device to suit his or her needs. The fulcrums provided by the support elements enable even further movement, for example, further lengthening for larger collar sizes, or further vertical extension for an increased collar height. It is also possible to provide extensions to the device, which could aid, for example, in the secure fitting of the device, allowing further adaptation of the length of the ends of the body, or provide a decorative element to the det The embodiments described above are provided by way of examples only, and various other modifications will be apparent to persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the appended chinis.
