Abstract

246,213. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., Barclay, W. B., and Keall, F. B. Oct. 22, 1924. Edge - setting and burnishing. - A shoebottom edge burnishing machine of the kind described in Specilication 14696/08 is provided' with means for modifying the action of the tool during one traverse of the shoe to produce a sleeking and finishing effect on the edge and to obviate the formation of ridges or humps on the edge. To this end a block 4 is moved by the ratchet counting mechanism 1 described in the above-mentioned Specification, at the commencement of the last traverse of the shoe, beneath a vertically reciprocating screw 20. The block and the bar 5 on which it slides are thrust downwardly by the screw and move, through linkage 11, 13 and a bell-crank lever 15, a belt-tightening roll 18 which by this movement slackens the belt 19 which vibrates the burnishing tool. The latter consequently merely presses, without vibration, against the shoe-bottom edge during the last traverse. To ensure this the belt is at the same time lifted from the driving pulley 27 by arms 31 operated by linkage 28, 29, 30. Arms 39 on the arms 31 then move a lever 35 the outer end of which engages an eccentric 34 on the tool oscillating- sliaft 33 to arrest the tool in the mid-position of its oscillation. The removal of the tool from the work at the end of the operation is controlled by the valve mechanism which reverses the traverse of the shoe at the end of each traverse and the jack is traversed back after removal of the tool, so that in a new operation the tool will first engage a straight part of the edge.
