Abstract

A personal introduction (dating) system 10 includes mobile telephone network 12, television broadcast network 16 and profile processing system 14. Processing system 14 receives a text message comprising a user profile (and optionally image files) sent from a communication device, e.g. a mobile phone 30. Profile processor 18 creates a user profile biography, corresponding to the received profile, which is stored in biography database 22. Biographies are loaded into carousel memory (26) and then broadcast over television network 16 for display on digital television 32 in household 34. After viewing a broadcasted biography, a viewing system user my request the profile associated with the biography by entering a request code into mobile phone 30 as a text message and transmitting it to processing system 14. Processing system 14 retrieves the profile corresponding to the request code and transmits it back to mobile phone 30. A home page (62) displayed on television 32 may also provide a "define your date" searching function (68).

Referring to Figure 1 a personal introduction system 10 comprises a mobile telephone network 12, a profile processing system 14, and a television broadcast networkl6.
Referring also to Figure 2, the profile processing system 14 has a mobile telephone receiver-transmitter 17, a profile processor 18 and a transmitter 19.
The profile processor 18 has a processor 20, a biography database 22, a profile database 24, memory in the form of a carousel memory 26, and a data encoder 28.
* In use, the mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17 receives text messages, sent from a plurality of mobile phones 30 over the mobile network 12. Each text message ***.
* comprises a profile code, which represents the profile of a user seeking an introduction or additional information. Creation of the profile code is described later. *
. : :* 20 The text messages may have associated image files, which are transmitted from the * :* * mobile telephones 30 with the respective profile code and which are also collected by the mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17.
The mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17 transmits the profile and images to the processor 20, in the profile processor 18. The processor 20 creates a biography for each of the received profiles and stores the profile biography in the biography database 22. Received image files are also stored in the biography database 22. A request code is generated for each profile and is representative thereof. The received profiles are stored in the profile database 24 with their generated request code for retrieval upon request From the biography database 22, the biographies, associated image files and request codes are loaded onto the carousel memory 26, which acts as transient memory prior to the biographies and image files being played out through the data encoder 28 for broadcasting over the television broadcasting network 19.
The carousel memory 26 acts like a conveyor. As one set of biographies, associated image files and request codes are retrieved from the carousel memory 24 by the data encoder 28, the processor 20 loads another set onto the carousel memory 26 from the biography database 22. The rate at which the biographies and associated images are loaded on and retrieved from the carousel memory 24 is determined by the amount of * ** biography and image file traffic and the available bandwidth. The processor 20 * controls the rate accordingly. ***. ***
S
* : 20 The biographies, image files and request codes are played out from the data encoder *: * and broadcast over the television broadcast network 16 through the transmitter 19.
Referring also to Figure 3, a digital television receiver 32 is positioned adjacent a television in a household 34 (as shown in Figure 1). The digital receiver 32 is connected to a receiving antenna 36 and has a processor 38 and memory 40.
The digital receiver processor 38 has a tuner 42, a decoder 44, processing means 46, a video system 48, decryption means 50, a clock 52 and an infra-red receiver 54. The digital receiver 32 is connected to a television display screen 56.
The digital receiver memory 40 has storage memory 58 and flash memory 60.
Upon selection of a predetermined frequency or channel through the tuner 42 the broadcast biographies are received via the antenna 36. The received biographies, request codes and, if applicable, the associated image files are decoded by the decoder 44. The decoder 44 is an ADC or QPSK decoder. The decoded biographies, request codes and image files are then transmitted to the processing means 46. The processing means 46 is a Central Processing Unit (CPU) and communicates with the storage memory 58 which provides cache memory for the decoded biographies (including images) and flash memory 60, which provides memory for user identification and decryption keys. The processing means 46 also communicates with the decrypting * ** means for decrypting messages encrypted prior to being broadcast, the clock 52, for S...
* synchronising the received broadcast biographies and image files and the infra-red * .: receiver 54 for receiving instructions from a user via an infra-red remote control * 20 handset. The processing means 46 is also connected to the video system 48 for outputting the received biographies and image files onto the television display screen Referring also to Figure 4, a broadcast home page 62 is displayed on the television display screen 56. The broadcast home page 62 has a biography window 64, in which a broadcast biography is displayed, and an image window 66, in which an associated image is displayed. The biography and image windows, 64 and 66, are continually, or continuously, scrolled as the biographies and image files are loaded and retrieved on the carousel memory 26 in the message processing system 14 as previously described with reference to Figure 2. Having viewed a broadcast biography and image of a registered system user, a viewing system user may request the profile associated with that broadcast biography or image by navigating a cursor or highlighted portion of the display screen 56 onto the biography or image and selecting using an infra red remote control handset via the infra red receiver. The system then displays the request code associated with the selected biography or image on the display screen 56. Referring also to Figure 2, the viewing user then enters the request code into a mobile telephone as a text message and transmits the text message to the profile processing system 14 where the mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17 receives it. The processor 20 then retrieves the profile, corresponding with the received request code, from the profile database 24 and transmits the retrieved profile back to the mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17. The mobile phone receiver-transmitter 17 transmits the profile, * ** corresponding to the received request code, to the viewing user's mobile telephone. message. The viewing system user and the registered system user may then exchange *.* further communications via the system.
Referring to Figures 4, 5 and 6, the home page 62 also has a "define your date" searching function 68. Selecting the searching function 68 opens the search page 70.
The search page 70 has a characteristic selection window 72. The selection window 72 has a list of profile characteristics 74, which correspond to the characteristics of the user profiles stored on the profile database 24,including,for example, male/female, age range, character, smoker/non-smoker, hair colour, number of children, geographical region and so on. Each characteristic 74 has a list of selectable sub-characteristics from which the viewing user can select to define their preferred date.
Referring also to Figure 6, the search function 68 comprises a plurality of profile characteristics templates 76, which in practice account for at least the majority of possible characteristic profiles selectable. The number of templates required would typically be about 100, although it will be appreciated that a different number of templates may alternatively be used. Each profile characteristics template 76 has a plurality of template characteristics 78, that is one for each characteristic such as, for example, height range, male or female, hair colour and so on. The number of template characteristics required is typically about 23, although it will be appreciated that a different number of template characteristics may alternatively be used. Each template characteristic 78 is represented by a numerical code. Each profile characteristics * template 76 has a quantity 80 assigned to it which is the sum of the received user profiles stored on the user profile database 24 which match the respective profile * S..
characteristics template 76. The profile characteristics templates 76 are broadcast with * .* * . . * . . . . their respective quantities 80 and stored in the storage memory 58 of the television S.
S
receiver 32. The storage memory 58 is normally restricted to about 5kB and therefore the templates 76 are particularly advantageous as they allow more information to be presented to a viewing system user.
Following selection of the preferred characteristics, by the viewing system user, the search function 68 compares the selected desired profile 74a and matches the selected characteristics with one or more of the profile characteristics templates 76 and the quantity 80 of registered profiles that match the selected characteristics is displayed 82 on the search page 70 (see Figure 5). The image files and profile biographies corresponding to the matched profiles are displayed in matched biography windows 86 and matched image windows 84, respectively. Additionally, the profile biographies and associated image files corresponding to the received user profiles having characteristics matching the characteristics of the viewing system user may be displayed in the image windows 84 and matched biography windows 86. If the viewing system user wishes to receive the full user profile, he or she selects to do so accordingly using the infra red handset. Upon selection the search function displays an associated search profile request code on the television receiver display screen 56.
The viewing system user then transmits the search profile request code to the receiver 17 by means of a text message using a mobile telephone. Upon receipt of the text message the processor 20 retrieves the relevant user profiles from the profile database 22 and transmits them, via the transmitter 17 to the viewing system user. * **
Images of newly registered system users may also be included in the matched image **** * I *I..
windows 84. The matched image windows 84 are continually, or continuously, I. I::. scrolled. An associated matched biography window 86 is also displayed in association I..
* :* 20 with one or more of the image matched windows 84 as they are scrolled. Navigation of the cursor or highlighted portion of the screen onto a matched image window 84 and selection thereof via the infra red handset, stops the scrolling and selects the biography. As previously described the system then displays a profile request code which the viewing system user can send by text message to request the profile corresponding to the selected biography.
The home page 62 also has a user registering function 88, which provides for a viewing system user to register their profile for broadcasting through the system. In order to register their profile a viewing system user selects the registering function 88.
Doing so displays a menu of the characteristics as described for the searching function 68, that is, for example, male/female, age range, character, smoker/non-smoker, hair colour, number of children, geographical region and so on. The viewing system user selects the relevant characteristics which best describe themselves. Upon completion of the selection process, the system generates a profile code based on the selected characteristics and displays the profile code on the display screen 56. The viewing system user enters the profile code in a mobile telephone as a text message and transmits the text message to the mobile telephone receiver-transmitter 17. The mobile telephone receiver-transmitter 17 receives the text message and transmits it on to the processor 20. The processor 20 processes the profile code for broadcasting, as described above in relation to Figure 2. * ** * * . * ** **** * * -* * ** ** * S... *.. * S. * 5 * 5.5 S *. * * * S S **
