Abstract
A powdered product that can be admixed with hot water to produce a beverage comprises dried tomato juice as its major constituent, and also includes dried yeast or yeast extract and a dried vegetable or vegetable extract. Preferably said vegetable is celery or celeriac. In addition, dried carrot juice may be included. Salt may be added. Also disclosed is a beverage produced by the addition of hot water to the powdered product.
Description
BEVERAGES
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to beverages and it is an object of the present invention to provide a novel beverage that is pleasant and healthy to drink. A further object of the present invention is the provision of a beverage that is not only pleasant and healthy to drink but is also almost instant to prepare.
Summary of the Invention
According to the present invention there is provided a powdered product that can be admixed with hot water to produce a beverage, the powdered product comprising, as its major constituent, dried tomato juice, with minor amounts of dried yeast or yeast extract and a dried vegetable or vegetable extract.
The dried vegetable is preferably celery or celeriac and the dried vegetable extract is preferably celery extract or celeriac extract.
The dried tomato juice preferably forms at least 80% by weight of the powdered product, and may form more than 90% by weight of the powdered product.
The dried yeast or dried yeast extract may form between 1% and 5% by weight of the powdered product.
The dried celery or celeriac extract may form about 10% by weight of the powdered product but may also form between 1% and 5% by weight of the powdered product. Some of the dried celery or celery extract may be replaced by dried carrot juice.
The powdered product may also include 0.5% or 1% by weight salt.
The present invention also provides a beverage produced by the addition of hot water to the powdered product defined above.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
In one example of the present invention, a powdered product for use in making a beverage was prepared by mixing together the following ingredients:-Freeze-dried (or air-dried) tomato juice -90% by weight, Dried yeast extract -4% by weight, Dried celery extract -5% by weight, and Salt -1% by weight.
In another example of the present invention, the powdered product was prepared by mixing together the following ingredients:-Freeze-dried (or air-dried) tomato juice -88% by weight, Dried yeast extract -3% by weight, Dried celeriac extract -8% by weight, and Salt -1% by weight.
In a further example of the present invention, the powdered product was prepared by mixing together the following ingredients:-Freeze-dried (or air-dried) tomato juice -91% by weight, Dried yeast -4% by weight, Dried celery -4.5% by weight, and Salt -0.5% by weight.
In another example of the present invention, the powdered product was prepared by mixing together the following ingredients:-Freeze-dried (or air-dried) tomato juice -85% by weight, Dried yeast extract -4% by weight, Dried celery -6% by weight, Dried carrot juice-4% by weight, and Salt -1% by weight.
In use of each of the powdered products described above, two or three teaspoonfuls (according to taste) of the product are placed in a mug, hot water is added and the mixture is stirred well.
Claims (12)
- Claims:- 1. A powdered product that can be admixed with hot water to produce a beverage, the powdered product comprising, as its major constituent, dried tomato juice, with minor amounts of dried yeast or yeast extract and a dried vegetable or vegetable extract.
- 2. A powdered product as claimed in Claim 1, in which the dried vegetable is celery or celeriac.
- 3. A powdered product as claimed in Claim 1, in which the dried vegetable extract is celery extract or celeriac extract.
- 4. A powdered product as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the dried tomato juice forms at least 80% by weight of the powdered product.
- 5. A powdered product as claimed in Claim 4, in which the dried tomato juice forms more than 90% by weight of the powdered product.
- 6. A powdered product as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, in which the dried yeast or dried yeast extract forms between 1 % and 5% by weight of the powdered product.
- 7. A powdered product as claimed in any one of Claims I to 4, in which the dried celery or celeriac extract forms about 10% by weight of the powdered product.
- 8. A powdered product as claimed in Claim 5, in which the dried celery or celeriac extract forms between 1% and 5% by weight of the powdered product.
- 9. A powdered product as claimed in Claim 7 or Claim 8, in which some of the dried celery or celery extract is replaced by dried carrot juice.
- 10. A powdered product as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, which includes about 0.5% or 1 % by weight salt.
- 11. A powdered product that can be admixed with hot water to produce a beverage, said powdered product having a composition in accordance with any of the examples hereinbefore described.
- 12. A beverage produced by the addition of hot water to the powdered product claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
