Abstract

A hand tool for removing threaded fixings with a damaged head 7 comprises a cylindrical body 1 with an aperture having internal sharp splines 2 which cut into the threaded fixing to secure the body to the fixing. This is effected by attaching a male square drive member 6 of a striking plate 4 into a corresponding square drive recess 3 in the cylindrical body 1, and hitting a striking face 5 of the striking plate 4 with a hammer. A user can then remove the threaded fixing with a damaged head 7 by removing the striking plate 4 and attaching a square drive turning tool to the recess 3 in the cylindrical body 1.

Socket for removing threaded fixings with damaged heads.
This invention relates to a device for removing threaded fixings with damaged heads, (nuts/bolts etc).
When threaded fixings are left out in the elements they tend to rust, hence when the fixings are to be removed in many cases with conventional hand tools e.g. spanners, sockets etc, they do not fit correctly causing the tool to slip and round or damage the heads of the fixings.
However, there are a variety of tools for the removal of such damaged fixings such as nut splitters, hammer and chisel, reverse thread socket, angle grinder and in some cases the damaged head has to be removed then drilled out and re-tapped which is time consuming. Even so all the tools mentioned above are limited to the space in which they can be used and in most cases are not very successful, e.g. locking wheel nuts with lost keys can be very challenging as they are in a recess. Easy-out is very versatile and can be used in a very limited space. Easy-out is slightly larger than a standard socket of the same internal diameter. The Easy-out has internal tapered sharp spines which cut into the damaged fixing and then the fixing is simply removed by way of square drive tool, e.g. socket ratchet.

In figure 1 an Easy-out 1, is of a cylindrical construction with 2, internal tapered sharp splines with 3, female square drive opening to one end.

In figure 3 shows the top view of 1, and 3.
In figure 4 the striking plate 4, 6, the male square drive and 5, the striking area which is designed to eliminate damage to the end of 1.
In figure 5 shows how 1, is used 4, is inserted into 1, by locating 5, into 3, then 1, and 4, are placed over 7, (damaged head of threaded fixing) to gain a firm grip on 7, 5, is hit with a hammer which in turn forces 2, to cut into 7, making a tight fit. 4, then is removed and replaced with a square drive tool then in turn 7, is removed. Then 7, is removed from the body of 1, by passing a centre punch through 3, and tapping out with a hammer which is easily done because the splines are tapered.
