Description

Container
Cross Reference to Related Application
This application represents the first application for a patent directed toward the invention and the subject matter.
Technical Field
The present invention relates to a container, in particular a container for a drink.
Background of the Invention
Containers for a drink are known, such as bottles and flasks. Containers may be shaped andlor may carry graphics that are designed to appeal to a particular section of society, for example children
Brief Summary of the Invention
According to an aspect of the present invention, there is provided a container comprising a stand portion and a vessel portion having a delivery end, wherein said container is configurable between: a first configuration in which said vessel portion is supported by said stand portion in a first orientation in which said delivery end of said vessel portion is enclosed by said stand portion, and a second configuration in which said vessel portion is supported by said stand portion in a second orientation in which said delivery end of said vessel portion is exposed.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of providing a container, comprising the steps of: providing a vessel portion having a delivery end, and providing a support portion configured to support said vessel portion in a first orientation, in which the delivery end of the vessel portion is enclosed by the stand portion, and configured to support the vessel portion in a second orientation, in which said delivery end of said vessel portion is exposed.
In an embodiment, the vessel portion is not self-supporting on a planar support surface when oriented in said second orientation.
Brief Description of the Several Views of the Drawings Figure 1 shows a container in a first configuration; Figure 2 shows the container of Figure 1 in a second configuration; and Figure 3 shows details of the stand portion of Figure 1.
Description of the Best Mode for Carrying out the Invention Figure 1 A container 101 is illustrated in Figure 1. The container comprises a stand portion 102 and a vessel portion 103 having a delivery end indicated at 104. Container 101 is shown in a first configuration in which the vessel portion 103 is supported by the stand portion 102 in a first orientation, in which the delivery end 104 of the vessel portion 103 is enclosed by the stand portion 102.
According to this illustrated embodiment, the container is configured to resemble a rocket ship when it is the first configuration. It is, however, to be appreciated that the container may be configured to resemble an alternative item.
In an embodiment, the vessel portion and the stand portion are configured to be mechanically connected when the container is in the first configuration. In an embodiment, the vessel portion and the stand portion are configured to be screwed together, although alternative modes of connection may be used. Preferably, the container is sealed when the vessel portion and the stand portion are mechanically connected. In this way, the container is configured to be watertight and air tight.
In an embodiment, the vessel portion is fabricated from metal. For example, the vessel portion may be fabricated from extruded aluminium or steel. Alternatively, the vessel portion may be fabricated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In an embodiment the stand portion is fabricated from plastic. For example, the stand portion may be fabricated from polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Figure 2 Container 101 is configurable from the first configuration shown in Figure 1 into a second configuration.
Container 101 is shown in Figure 2 in a second configuration in which the vessel portion 103 is supported by the stand portion 102 in a second orientation, in which the delivery end 104 of the vessel portion 103 is exposed.
According to this illustrated embodiment the second orientation is the reverse of the first orientation of the vessel portion. Thus, the vessel portion may be supported one way up by the stand portion, when not in use as a drinking cup, and then supported the other way, when in use as a beaker.
The delivery end 104 of the vessel portion may be provided with a removable seal. A removable seal may take the form of a ring pull seal. In an embodiment, a cover may additionally or alternatively be provided for the delivery end of the vessel portion.
In the shown embodiment, the stand portion is configured to act as a drip tray when the container is in the second configuration.
In the illustrated embodiment, the vessel portion comprises a circular paraboloid shape. In this embodiment, the other end is the opposite end to the delivery end. It is to be appreciated that when the vessel portion is in the second orientation, it will not remain upright if rested upon a planar support surface. The other end to the delivery end is shaped such that the vessel portion will not support itself in the second orientation. Thus, the vessel portion is not self-supporting when oriented in the second orientation. Hence, the stand portion serves to maintain the vessel portion in the second orientation, at an angle that prevents spillage of its contents.
In an embodiment, the vessel portion has a liquid capacity of 180 millilitres but may have any other desired capacity.
Figure 3 Stand portion 102 is shown in more detail in Figure 3. According to this illustrated embodiment, the stand portion comprises a hemispheroidal shape.
According to the shown arrangement, the stand portion comprises a plurality of fins, such as fin 301. The fins are configured to provide a plurality of external points of contact with a support surface, such as the external point of contact indicated at 302.
Thus when the container is in the second configuration, the arrangement rests upon the external ends of the fins upon a support surface. In this embodiment, the fins support the hemispheroidal shape at a displaced height above the support surface. In turn, the stand is configured to support the vessel above the support surface. In the present embodiment, the vessel is supported above the support surface by the stand in both configurations of the container.
It can also be seen in Figure 3 that the fins are configured to provide a plurality of internal points of contact, such as the internal point of contact indicated at 303, with the vessel portion, when the container is in the second configuration. In this embodiment three fins are provided, although a different number may be provided as desired. However, an alternative support arrangement may be used to provide the described functionality of the support portion.
The container described herein thus provides a functional aspect, that being of containing a liquid say, and an aesthetic aspect, in this example a novelty rocket ship design. It is to be understood that the container illustrated herein is designed to be attractive to children, and hence provide a fun receptacle from which to deliver a drink.
However, the container may be designed to be attractive to other types of people.
In a preferred application, the container is used to store a drink of a nutritional or otherwise healthy nature. It is to be appreciated however that the container may be used to contain something other than a liquid. It is further to be appreciated that, depending on the materials used in the fabrication of the container, that the container may allow for personalisation of the stand portion andlor the vessel portion. For example, words or graphics may be applied by thereto or a design may be displayed in intaglio or in relief In an embodiment, a label is applied to the container by, for example, a rotary cold glue labeller.
