Abstract
245,829. Davis, N. E., and Ditcham, W. T. Oct. 13, 1924. Thermionic modulating systems.-In a transmitting system comprising intermediate and power amplifiers energized by a master oscillator, wherein the anode voltage is derived from a common source, modulation is effected by controlling the voltage drop across a resistance inserted in such a position that the anode current of the independent-drive valve, or the intermediate amplifier, passes through it, though the anode supply to the power amplifier does not. As shown in the Figure, a master oscillator circuit D supplies intermediate and power amplifiers VI, V2. A resistance R1 in the plate circuit of the valve VI is shunted by one or more absorption valves V3, the grid potential of which is varied by means of a key F, and batteries B1, B2. When the absorption valve is made conductive the potential drop across R1 reduces the anode voltage of the valve V1 to such an extent as to stop oscillations in the aerial A. Meanwhile the load across the generator G is taken up by the absorption valve V3, thus preventing voltage surges during signalling. The valve V3 may be replaced by a suitable switch having a sufficiently high current-carrying capacity.
