Abstract

Fuse board, e.g. consumer unit, comprises live, neutral and earth conductive bars R23, R21 and R22 respectively. Power to the live and neutral bus-bars is controlled by main circuit breaker switch R24 which plugs into live and neutral rails. Main circuit breaking switch R24 is also wired to an incoming power supply. Each conductive bus-bar has a plurality of holes R20 for the insertion of conductive pins of a circuit breaker such as a residual current device with over-current protection (RCBO). The RCBO's have live, neutral and earth pins which means they can connect to mains power without the use of bulky cables.

Description

Description
Wireless RCBO's and easy fit fuse board.
The fuse board and breakers will give your property / installation the maximum protection, without the problem of nuisance tripping from RCD's (residual current device) and give individual circuit protection that meets the new 17th edition lEE wiring regulations. It is also quicker and easier to install, with the added advantage of having fuliy interchangeable parts.
The key features of this design are that there are no extra cables inside the fuse board, allowing better air flow to prevent the circuit cables heating up. It will take less time to install the entire fuse board and breakers because they are push fit connections. The entire unit and breakers are fully interchangeable so there is less risk of large amp breakers being installed at the wrong end of the board possibly (human error) causing the connector bars inside the board to over heat and over load.
The pins at the back of the RCBO (P1) are evenly spaced and made of solid copper, (these could be made with a different metal if it has a low resistance), these push in to the terminal slots (P3) of the connector bars and clip into place by the clips at the top and bottom of the breaker so they can not be accidentally pulled out. The main switch (P2) also has pins that push into the connector bars but only the live and neutral, these are clipped into place securely by top and bottom connector bar clips.
The redesigned RCBO's (residual current breaker with over current device) have no cables but rather uses the pins in the back of the breaker and terminal bars inside the fuse board to carry the current through the RCBO into the circuit cables, allowing each circuit to be individually protect from earth, neutral or live faults without tripping any other circuit in the fuse board. Any fault current will not be carried to another circuit as the faulty circuit will shut off immediately. The circuit cables will terminate in the top of each of the RCBO's by terminal tunnels with adjusting screws through the top of the breaker. The RCBO will have push clips at the top and bottom of the breaker to secure it to the connector bars.
The main switch (main breaker) also has pins at the back, but only the neutral and live. These will be terminated inside the breaker to the relevant terminals and held in place with spring loaded bar clips for a more secure fit. The main tails (live and neutral feed from the meter) are terminated at the top of the breaker by terminal tunnels with adjusting screws through the top of the breaker, similar to the RCBO's.
When the main breaker is switched on the current will flow through these pins into the connector bars.
The fuse board consists of three connector bars, the top connector bar being neutral, the middle earth and the bottom connector bar live. These bars will be insulated for extra safety and have slots at regular spaces along the length of the bars. These slots will be a secure copper tunnel for the pins (from the main breaker and those on the RCBO's) to terminate inside the slots. The earth bar will be connected to the earth block in the top of the board with a hollowed copper tube connecting the two, screwed at each end to allow for the bar, tube or block to be replaced if needed. The board cover will be made from a tough durable plastic. This will be in two parts. The back is the part that houses all the connector bars and connector block, with slightly weaker knock out points for the cables to be fed through. The connector bars and block will be screwed to the back of this part of the board. The front cover will have a large rectangular slot to allow the switches on all of the breakers to be operated without danger from exposed cables. This screws through each corner of the board and fixes firmly to the back cover. Finally a transparent flap will be hinged over the switches and cover them completely to prevent accidentally switching them off or on.

Claims (4)

  1. Claims RCBO's 1. The RCBO's (residual current circuit breakers with over current device) are cable free, (every RCBO that has been installed by myself has had a neutral and earth cable protruding from the top of the breaker) this will allow considerably more room inside the fuse board and no risk of damage to the cables.
  2. 2. The RCBO's will give total fault protection to any circuit with a maximum shut off time of 0.40 seconds without the risk of any other circuit tripping off. This is unlike the RCD (residual current device) as it does not control individual circuits, it normally has at least three circuits on it.
  3. 3. The RCBO's are an easy fit unit, because of the incorporated bars at the back. There are no other RCBO's, MCB's (mini circuit breakers) or RCD's that have this feature to my knowledge.Main switch 1. The main switch is an easy fit breaker because of the pins at the back incorporating the live and the neutral into the two pins, this is more secure because of the clips that hold it in place. Unlike other main switches.2. There are less bulky cables from the main switch. You would normally have a large neutral and live cable from the main switch to the RCD module.Fuse board (CCU) 1. The CCU has all the connections incorporated into the board without the use of cables. This has an more secure feature to it, that the RCBO' s not only clip to the back of the board like others do but it also pushes into the connector bars making them even more secure.2. All three bars are push fit and totally secure. No other fuse board has incorporated this, it is much quicker to install the main switch and RCBO's.3. All three bars are totally insulated giving maximum protection from electrocution.
  4. 4. All contents of the fuse board are removable for replacement or repair. This way the whole board doesn't need to be replaced, cutting cost and time for the client and the electrician if it becomes faulty.
