Description

Title: Platform DescriDtion of Invention This invention relates to a method of providing an amusement apparatus, and to a platform for supporting an amusement apparatus.
It is known to provide amusement apparatus, which has a superstructure and a passenger carrying device which is moveable relative to the superstructure, for providing a passenger with a pleasure ride. For example an observation or Ferris' wheel includes a wheel which is mounted on a superstructure, the wheel carrying one or more passenger carrying devices. Each passenger carrying device is capable of carrying one or more persons. The wheel is revolved through 360°to elevate and lower each of the passenger carrying devices progressively.
When it is required for the amusement apparatus to be transported to an alternative location, this involves the time consuming and costly process of dismantling each part of the apparatus, including the superstructure, and transporting each part to the new location. The parts of the amusement apparatus are often transported by road.
According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of providing an amusement apparatus of the kind which includes a superstructure, and a passenger carrying device which is moveable relative to the superstructure for providing a passenger of the passenger carrying device with a pleasure ride, the method including erecting at least a base part of the superstructure on a platform which is capable of floating in a body of water, then floating the platform and moving the platform to a desired location, the platform including a supporting structure which is moveable between a stowed condition to which the supporting structure is moved to enable floating of the plafform, and a supporting condition, in which the supporting structure is in engagement with a bed of the body of water to support the platform, the method including, at the desired location, moving the supporting structure to the supporting condition, completing the erection of the superstructure as necessary and mounting the passenger carrying device on the superstructure.
Thus the invention enables an amusement apparatus to be provided which can readily be transported to a new location by floating, whilst the superstructure does not need to be completely dismantled and reassembled.
This has a significant cost saving. Also, because the apparatus is operated on the platform in the body of water, valuable waterside space is not required.
The method may include providing a plurality of passenger carrying devices which are moveable relative to the superstructure, for example each passenger carrying device may be mounted on a substructure which is supportable by the superstructure. The substructure may include a pluratity of disconnectable and reconnectable parts.
The method may include positioning the substructure on the superstructure to S...
provide mountings for the passenger carrying devices when the supporting structure is in its supporting condition. *.
The method may include the step of transporting at least one of a passenger * . carrying device, and a disassembled substructure part on the platform, to the r 25 desired location. However, such disassembled parts may be transported separately from the platform, and superstructure, for example by road.
The substructure of the amusement apparatus may be in the form of a wheel which is rotatable relative to the superstructure. The superstructure may include an axle about which the wheel is rotatable. Thus the platform is a floating structure which is capable of carrying a dynamic turning device.
According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided a method of moving an amusement apparatus provided according to the first aspect of the invention, from the desired location to an alternative desired location including the steps of dismounting the passenger carrying device from the superstructure, moving the supporting structure to the stowed condition, floating the platform to the alternative desired location, and at the alternative desired location moving the supporting structure again to the supporting condition, and re-mounting the passenger carrying device on the superstructure.
The method according to the second aspect of the invention may include partially disassembling the erected superstructure and the substructure, where provided, to leave at least a base part of the superstructure erected on the platform, before floating the platform to the alternative desired location, and at the alternative desired location, completing the erection of the superstructure prior to re-mounting the passenger carrying device on the superstructure.
According to a third aspect of the invention, there is provided in combination, a : 20 platform and an amusement apparatus, the platform being able to float in S...
*ISS water, and including a supporting structure which is movable relative to the platform between supporting condition in which the supporting structure engages a bed of body of water, and a stowed condition, to enable the platform to float in the body of water, the platform carrying at least part of a r' 25 superstructure of the amusement apparatus.
S

The platform may include a hollow hull and/or floats, to enable the platform to float in water.
The moveable supporting structure may include a plurality of leg devices. The leg devices may be retractable and extendible to move the supporting
L
structure between its stowed and supporting conditions. The supporting structure may be moved between its stowed and supporting conditions hydraulically, electrically or manually.
The amusement apparatus may include a plurality of passenger carrying devices.
The or each passenger carrying device may be carried by the superstructure via a substructure such as a wheel, which is supportable by the superstructure. The substructure may include a plurality of parts which are disconnectable from and reconnectable to one another. This enables the substructure to be stored and/or transported more easily.
The superstructure may include a base part and one or more upper parts, the base part being fixed in position relative to the platform, and the or each upper part being disconnectable from and reconnectable to the base part. An advantage of providing the superstructure in a plurality of parts is that upper parts of the superstructure may be disconnected from the base part of the superstructure to reduce the height of the superstructure, for example when : 20 the platform is being transported from one location to another. This may be advantageous where an obstruction would otherwise prevent the passage of the platform, for exmple under bridges, with the superstructure in place. I... * S 1.5'
The platform may include a storage area for stowing at least a part of the amusement apparatus when the part or parts is or are not mounted on the base of superstructure. For example the dissembled parts of the substructure, the or each passenger carrying device and/or parts of the superstructure which have been disconnected from the base part of the superstructure may be transported on the platform to a new location.
The platform may carry a prime mover for driving a propelling device for moving the platform while floating in its stowed condition, or the platform may be moveable through water by another vessel, for example a tug.
The substructure of the amusement apparatus may be a wheel, which is rotatable relative to the superstructure, and mounts the or each of the passenger carrying devices.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: FIGURE 1 is a side view of a platform in its stationary state, supporting an assembled amusement apparatus, FIGURE 2 is a side view of a platform in its transportable state carrying parts of an amusement apparatus, and FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of a platform carrying a superstructure of an amusement apparatus.
Referring first to figure 1, a platform is shown generally at 10. The platform 10 S...
: 20 is capable of floating in water 11, and may include one or more hollow hulls or *5*5 floats to buoy the platform 10. The platform 10 may be a pontoon for example.
In the example shwn, an upper surface of the platform 10 is generally rectangular, but it will be appreciated that the upper surface of the platform 10 may be any shape as required. 25 S...
The supporting structure 12 of the platform 10 includes four leg devices 13 (of which two are shown in figure 1), one at each corner of the platform 10. In this example each leg device 13 of the supporting structure 12 includes a leg portion 13a and a foot portion 13b. It will be appreciated that the support structure 12 of the platform 10 may have any number of leg devices 13 as required, or the support structure 12 of the platform 10 may have a single supporting leg device 13.
The leg devices 13 of the supporting structure 12 are each capable of being moved, for example raised and lowered, relative to the platform 10. Each leg device 13 of the supporting structure 12 is shown in its lowered position in figure 1. Each leg device 13 is retractable into a respective receiving chamber 14 in the platform 10, and is extendable through a lower part of the platform 10. The leg devices 13 of the supporting structure 12 may be extended and retracted hydraulically, electrically or even manually for examples. It will be appreciated that alternative methods of raising and lowering the supporting structure 12 relative to the platform 10 may be used. For example, the supporting structure 12 may be telescopic, or may fold against the lower part of the platform 10, or may even be removable.
The platform 10 carries a superstructure 20 of an amusement apparatus 24.
The superstructure 20 includes a plurality of generally upwardly extending members 21, which are inclined with respect to the platform 10. Each of the generally upwardly extending members 21 extends towards an uppermost I...
: 20 point22ofthesuperstructure2o. * *
In this example, he superstructure 20 includes five generally upwardly extending members21. However it will be appreciated that the superstructure may include any number of generally upwardly extending members 21, and *..: 25 may include a single generally upwardly extending member 21. Each of the generally upwardly extending members 21 preferably is monolithic, that is, in one piece.
The amusement apparatus 24 includes a passenger carrying device 26 which is moveable relative to the superstructure 20. In this example, the amusement apparatus 24 includes a plurality of passenger carrying devices 26 mounted on a substructure 25, the substructure 25 being supported by the superstructure 24. The substructure 25 is a substantially circular wheel 25, around the circumference of which the passenger carrying devices 26 are mounted spaced substantially equidistantly. The wheel 25 includes a plurality of parts which can be disconnected and reconnected to enable the wheel 25 to be dismantled and reassembled. The wheel 25 preferably includes a plurality of spokes 28 and may include additional or alternative strengthening members (not shown). An axle about which the wheel 25 is able to revolve is provided by the uppermost point 22 of the superstructure 20.
Each of the passenger carrying devices 26 is capable of carrying one or more passengers, and includes an entry point, for example a door, for the entry and exit of passengers. Each passenger carrying device 26 may be completely enclosed, or may include open portions. It will be appreciated that each passenger carrying device 26 may take the form of a simple seat on which a passenger may sit. Each of the passenger carrying devices 26 is disconnectable from and reconnectable to wheel 25. Each passenger carrying device 26 is rotatable relative to the wheel 25, such that as the wheel 25 revolves relative to the superstructure 20, each passenger carrying device 26 S...
: 20 maintains a substantially upright orientation. 5.5 * . *...
The superstructure\ 20 has so far been described as including generally upwardly extending\members 21, each of which is monolithic. However, the superstructure 20 may include a base part which is generally maintained in a r' 25 fixed position relative to the platform 10 and an upper part which may be disconnected from and reconnected to the base part. For example each of the generally upwardly extending members 21 may include a plurality of sections which are disconnectable from and reconnectable to one another, a lowermost section of each of the generally upwardly extending members 21 being connected to the platform 10, to form the base of the superstructure 20. This could be advantageous if the overall height of the amusement apparatus 24 is
S
particularly great. A typical overall height of the amusement apparatus 24 is between 33 metres to 120 metres.
The platform 10 includes at least one storage area 30 for storing at least one of a passenger carrying device 26 and a part of the wheel 25, when the wheel or other substructure is in a dismantled state. Where the superstructure 20 includes a base part and an upper part, it is also possible for at least a part of the superstructure 20 which has been disconnected from the base part of the superstructure 20 to be stored in the storage area(s) 30. The passenger carrying devices 26, the parts of the wheel 25 and/or the parts of the superstructure 20 may be stacked in the storage area(s) 30.
The platform 10 may further include a safety barrier 34 (as indicated in figure 3) to reduce the risk of people or objects falling from the platform 10 into the surrounding water 11.
Figure 1 shows the amusement apparatus 24 and the platform 10 in a stationary condition. The supporting structure 12 is in its supporting condition, which is to say extended, with each of the foot portion 13b of each of the leg S. * 20 devices 13 engaged with a bed 32 of a body of water 11. The supporting S...
S.... structure 12 may extend through unstable material, for example sediment, which may be presnt on an upper surface of the bed 32. Hence the platform is supported by tie supporting structure 12 In a substantially fixed position relative to the bed 32 of the body of water 11. The platform 10 is intended to r 25 be maintained in a generally stationary position in relatively shallow waters.
The maximum depth of the water in which the platform can be supported will be dependent on the depth to which the supporting structure 12 can be extended relative to the platform 10, and the depth of any unstable material, for example sediment, through which the supporting structure 12 must extend before reaching a stable part of the bed 32 upon which to support the platform 10. It is anticipated that the maximum depth to which the supporting structure 12 may be extended relative to the platform is approximately 33 metres. A typical depth would be approximately 15 to 20 metres.
When the supporting structure 12 is extended so as to support the platform on the bed 32, the platform 10 is maintained in a substantially stationary position relative to the bed 32. The platform 10 is supported sufficiently by the supporting structure 12 for the wheel 25 to be supported by the superstructure and operated normally. It is desirable for the wheel 25 to remain stable whilst it revolves about its centre 22, thus moving each passenger carrying device 26 relative to the superstructure 20, and hence the platform 10. It may be necessary to raise the platform 10 relative to level of the surrounding water 11, by extending the supporting structure 12, so that the platform 10 is prevented from floating whilst in its stationary condition, so as to increase the stability of the platform 10 and the amusement apparatus 24.
The platform 10 may be located adjacent a bank of the body of water 11, such that passengers may access the platform 10 on foot from the bank, or the platform 10 may be separated from the bank by a stretch of water which must be crossed, for example by boat or bridge, in order to access the platform 10. I... * IS S. *
** A supply of energy, for example electrical energy, is required to operate the amusement apparaus 24, for example to revolve the wheel 25. This could be provided by operating an electrical generator pOsitioned on the platform 10, or by providing a suitable connection, for example cabling, between the platform ** 25 10 and a supply of energy positioned on the bank of the body of water.
I..... S 5
When it is desired to relocate the amusement apparatus 24, the passenger carrying devices 26 are removed and the wheel 25 is dismantled and dismounted from the superstructure 20. It is preferable for at least one of the passenger carrying devices 26 and at least a part of the wheel 25 to be stowed in the storage area(s) 30 of the platform 10. Where the superstructure 20 has a base part and an upper part, at least a part of the superstructure 20 which may have been disconnected from the base of the superstructure 20 may also be stored in the storage area(s) 30. At least the base part of the superstructure 20 remains in its generally upwardly extending position, stationary relative to the platform 10. Parts of the amusement apparatus 24 which are not stowed in the storage area(s) 30 can be transported to the new location separately from the platform 10, for example by a separate vessel, or by road.
In order to transport the platform 10 and the amusement apparatus 24 to an alternative location, the leg devices 13 of the supporting structure 12 are each raised relative to the platform 10, into its stowage condition, such that the foot parts 13b are no longer in engagement with the bed 32, and the platform 10 is in a floating condition. In this example, each of the leg devices 13 is retracted at least partially into the platform 10. The platform 10 may include a prime mover (not shown) to power a propelling device to move the platform 10 through the water 11. Alternatively, or additionally, the platform 10 may be towed or pushed by another vessel, for example a tug, to its new location. S...
: 20 The height of the superstructure 20 (or at least a base part of the *...
superstructure 20) when the platform 10 is in its floating condition, is such that at least a base part of the superstructure 20 is generally suitable for passing *...
beneath obstructions, for example bridges which may span the waterways along which the platform 10 is transported. Thus, at least a base part of the ** 25 superstructure 20, and preferably the entire superstructure 20, is able to remain in situ on the platform 10 whilst the platform 10 and the amusement apparatus 24 are relocated.
When the new location of the amusement apparatus 24 is reached, the supporting structure 12 is moved again into its supporting condition. In this example each leg device 13 is extended so that each foot part 13b engages the bed of the body of water so as to support the platform 10 in its new position. The wheel 25 or other substructure is reassembled and is supported by the superstructure 20 as before. Each of the passenger carrying devices 26 is reattached to the wheel 25.
The supporting structure 12 may be raised and lowered relative to the platform by varying amounts. For example, it may be desired to position the amusement apparatus 24 in waters of different depths; therefore the supporting structure 12 may need to be extended more in one location than in another. Also, the bed 32 of the body of water 10 may not be horizontal, and therefore where the supporting structure 12 includes a plurality of leg devices 13, each leg device 13 may be extended to a different depth to enable the plafform 10 to remain substantially horizontal.
