Description

WINDOW INSTALLATION AND METHOD
Field of the Invention
This invention relates to a window installation in an opening in a prefabri-cated building such as a holiday home caravan, a park home or a modular building, and to a method of window installation..
Background to the Invention
With prefabricated buildings of this sort, windows are typically fitted from the exterior into an opening cut or constructed in the wall of the building and is sealed to the external face of the wall. In order to finish the internal opening, different types of finishing trim have been employed, but these can leave crev- ices in which dirt and germs can accumulate. This is undesirable in any build-ing, but is an especial problem in structures used as medical facilities, where the risk of infection needs to be reduced as much as possible. There is there-fore a need for a window finishing trim which provides an easily cleaned finish to the window, and an attractive appearance.
Summary of the Invention
Accordingly, the invention provides a window installation for a prefabri-cated building, comprising a window frame having a flange therearound which in use is sealed against the outer surface of the building around a window open-ing therein, the frame extending into the opening and presenting a groove or channel around the opening facing inwardly of the building, an architrave co-operating with the frame, the architrave consisting of lengths of extruded profile of a generally L-shaped section positioned so that a first limb of the L-shape rests against the inner surface of the wall around the opening and the second limb extends into the opening to engage in the groove or channel in the window frame, and wherein the first limbs of the profiles are each in the form of a hollow section, and a fixing block is provided at each corner of the window, each fixing block having a plug engageable in the hollow section of one of the profiles and at least one socket in the face thereof directed inwardly of the building, and a corner cover is provided at each corner, the corner cover covering the fixing block and being shaped to conform with the external shapes of the adjacent profiles whereby to enclose an end portion of each profile, the corner cover be-ing held in position by a tab engageable in the socket in the fixing block.
When the corners of the window opening are substantially right angles, each profile may abut the next at the window opening corners to provide an en-closed corner.
Preferably, the end of the second limb of the profile is provided with ser-rations on at least one side thereof to ensure that the profile is held firmly in the groove or channel. Alternative fixing methods include a simple interference fit or adhesive.
The tab on the corner cover preferably fastens in the socket of the fixing block by a ratchet action to make removal difficult and to allow for differences in height cause either by manufacturing tolerances of the components or of the wall construction into which a window is being installed. The cover preferably has two tabs fastening into two sockets. The fit may be such that the force re-quired to fit the corner cover to the fixing block can be achieved without tools, although it may be such that a light mallet is required in a production environ-ment.
The tab on the cover may fix into the socket in a number of different al-ternative ways. For example, a different tooth profile may be provided on the ratchet an the pawl between the tab and the socket. It could be an interference fit between two similar or dissimilar materials. A single snap fit fixing could be used. In yet another embodiment, the fixing could be made by passing a plastic component through a hole where it would be locked with a metal barb embed-ded in the fixing block and projecting into the socket at an oblique angle such that it can deflect to allow insertion of the tab, but engages the tab to prevent withdrawal of the tab from the socket. Such an arrangement is disclosed in re-spect of plastics cable ties in EP0819229, for example.
The receiving details on the fixing block run in line with the length of the profile into which it is to be fitted. The receiving details may, for example, be moulded longitudinal ribs on the plug which deform slightly when the plug is in-serted into the extrusion, to hold the plug firmly in place. Making the ribs or other details run in line with the length of the profile allows a degree of move-ment between the two parts to take up any build-up of manufacturing tolerance.
The fixing block is suitably manufactured of a plastics material, and the plug is preferably configured to be an interference fit in the hollow section of the profile. The force required to fit the fixing block into the profile is preferably such that a light mallet needs to be employed, while not being so great as to risk damage to the profile of the plug.
Only one fixing block and one corner cover are required for a 90 degree fitment. The corner cover is suitably injection moulded from a plastics material.
Ideally, the fixing of the corner cover to the fixing block is such that it cannot be removed without the use of tools.
Where the corner is less than or greater than 90 degrees, the corner cover may comprise first and second parts slidably rotatable relative to each other to fit over the ends of adjacent profiles whose longitudinal axes intersect obliquely or acutely. The adjustable corner cover is conveniently configured to accommodate angles between 30 degrees and 150 degrees.
The invention also provides a method of installing a window in an open-ing in a prefabricated building, the method comprising locating into the window opening from outside the building a window frame having a flange which en-gages against the outer surface of the building around the window opening, the frame extending into the opening and presenting a groove or channel around the opening facing inwardly of the building, locating an architrave around the interior of the opening, the architrave consisting of lengths of extruded profile of a generally L-shaped section positioned so that a first limb of the L-shape rests against the inner surface of the wall around the opening and the second limb extends into the opening, engaging the end of the second limb in the groove or channel in the window frame, each profile abutting the next at the window open- ing corners, the first limbs of the profiles each being in the form of a hollow sec-tion, securing a fixing block at each corner of the window, by engaging a plug on the fixing block in the hollow section of one of the profiles, and attaching a corner cover to each fixing block, the corner cover covering the fixing block and being shaped to conform with the external shapes of the adjacent profiles whereby to enclose an end portion of each profile, the corner cover being held in position by a tab engageable in the socket in the fixing block.
Brief Description of the Drawings
In the drawings, which illustrate exemplary embodiments of the invention: Figure 1 is a sectional view through the lower part of a window opening in a building, showing the relationship between the architrave and the window frame; Figure 2 is a perspective view of two sections of the architrave profile with fixing block and cover plate according to one embodiment of the invention, viewed from the side of the frame; Figure 3 is a similar view to that of Figure 2, but showing details hidden in Figure 2; Figure 4 is a front perspective view of the arrangement shown in Figures 2 and 3; Figure 5 is a corresponding view to that of Figure 4, showing the corner cover fixed in place; and Figure 6 is a perspective view of an alternative embodiment for accom-modating window frames whose corners are not at 90 degrees.
Detailed Description of the Illustrated Embodiment
Referring first to Figure 1, a window opening in a prefabricated building, for example a holiday home caravan, a park home or a modular building, has a window frame I fitted into it from the outside of the building. The frame is formed with a flange 2 that abuts the outside face 3 of the building around the opening, and which is sealed against it with the use of a sealing strip 2a. The window glass, typically a sealed double-glazed unit 4, is sealed into a recess in the frame. The frame comprises a recess lb and a separate deformable bead- ing ic to facilitate the installation of the glass. Such configurations are conven-tional and will not therefore be described further.
An architrave is formed around the inside of the opening by the use of lengths of an aluminium extruded profile 5 which is generally L-shaped in sec-tion, the first limb 5a of the L being formed as a hollow section 6 which rests against inner face 7 of the wall, while the second leg 5b extends inwardly of the opening and is provided with a ribbed portion 8 on the end thereof which en-gages in a channel 9 formed in the inner face of the frame I to lock therein by means of corresponding locking ribs 9a in the channel 9, holding the compo-nents in position in the window opening.
As may be seen from Figures 2 to 5, the lengths of profile extend into the corners of the opening and abut one against another to form a uniform reveal within the opening having a smooth easily cleaned surface. However, since mitring at the corners requires precision to avoid an unsightly appearance, the lengths are cut so as to extend over the inner sides of the opening only. Each corner is completed, in accordance with the invention, by the use of a fixing block 10 and a cover 11. The fixing block 10 comprises a plastics moulding having a pair of sockets 12 in the face thereof, and a plug 13 extending from one side and configured to be an interference fit into the hollow section 6 of one of the profiles 5 at the corner. The fixing block 10 is thus secured to only one of the profiles 5 at the corner, permitting its installation after the profiles are in po-sition, and avoiding the need for the profiles to be secured one to another. The cover 11 is shaped to conform with the external surface of each profile at the corner and to enclose the cut ends of the profiles. The internal face of the cover 11 has two serrated tabs 14 upstanding therefrom, the serrations engaging with detents provided in the sockets 12 so that, while the tabs can be pushed into the sockets with only moderate force, perhaps requiring only a light tap with a mallet, they are held firmly in the sockets and cannot readily be removed from them. The tabs 14 are configured to be smaller in width than the sockets 12, to permit a small degree of lateral movement of the cover relative to the fixing block to allow for manufacturing tolerances in the components and, more espe-cially, variations in the relative positions of the adjacent profiles 5 resulting from tolerances in cutting the window opening and in the window frame and profile components. As may be seen from Figure 5, the resulting architrave provides a satisfactory appearance and easily- cleaned surfaces.
Some window openings may not be exactly rectangular, and it is desir-able to be able to provide a tidy and easily-cleaned finish to architraves for these as well. Figure 6 illustrates one solution for this requirement. In this em- bodiment, the cover plate consists of two parts: an outer part 15 having an ex-ternal radiused edge 15a and an internal pivot corner 15b; and an inner part 16 conforming with the radiused edge 15a and sliding within it around the pivot corner 15b so that, as the inner part 16 extends out of the outer part 15, the in- cluded angle between the two parts decreases, and when the inner part is re-tracted into the outer part, the included angle increases, thereby permitting the cover to be fitted on to corners which are greater than or less than 90 degrees.
With this configuration, the profiles are not able to meet at the corner, and a fur-ther finishing member will be required.
