Abstract

245,570. Willoughby, M. F. Dec. 8, 1924. Tide-actuated signals. - A motor for actuating a bell-striking mechanism 4 comprises a bucket 22 and counterweight 3, tho bucket being adapted to ascend when empty and descend when filled with water from the tide-filled tank 10. At high tide the tank 10 is filled through the inlet 11, but water is excluded from the bucket well 14 by a float valve 16. The bucket being empty the weight 3 descends, operating the bell-mechanism 4 and raising the bucket by means of the cable 7. Ultimately the bucket strikes the stem 13 of the valve 12, whereupon water flows into it, the stem 13 being long enough to ensure so much time-lag that the bucket becomes full enough to outweigh the counterweight. A valve, having similarly a long stem 25, is provided in the bottom of the bucket so that when the bottom of the well 14 is reached this valve is opened and the bucket is emptied. Water from the bucket accumulates in an extensive reservoir 14a, but is discharged through the valve at low tide.
