Walls. - In a boiler furnace the walls are provided with substantially horizontal channels in which are secured water tubes exposed to the heat of the furnace and connected to the steam and water spaces of the boiler. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the tubes 4 are arranged in channels 5 in the walls 3 and connected to vertical headers 10, 10<a> communicating with horizontal headers 7, 7a connecting a tubular water screen 6 and in connection with the drum 9 through pipes 8, 8a. The tubes 4 are secured in the channels by means of bolts 12 engaging with clips 13 embracing the tubes. Alternatively, lugs 13a, Fig. 6, may be welded on the tubes and such lugs may be perforated to receive the upturned ends of bolts 12 which are secured in the lugs by nuts or cotter pins. The tubes 4 may be carried through the side walls, as shown in Fig. 5, in which case expansion joints are provided in the walls as shown in Fig. 9. Such joints consist of a flanged shoe 30 arranged in a recess in the wall and supporting asbestos, wool or like packing against which the tube bears. The recess is enclosed by a plate 34 provided with a collar 35 surrounding the tube and secured thereto by a set-screw 36.
