Abstract
A retractable ball castor 3 is disclosed which is extendable by pressurised fluid or air to provide a cushioned suspension. The castor may be attached to a piston 2 which moves in a cylinder 1 with one open end through which the castor may project. The piston may be retained in the cylinder by a circular ring 5 fitted into a groove in the cylinder. The castor may be retained in its position by a flange fitted to the outside of the cylinder. During operation, pressurised fluid or air may be supplied through connector 6 and pipe 7. Piston seals 4 may prevent the escape of fluid or air from the cylinder.
Description
Retractable Ball Castor
Background
The need to move equipment around to create a flexible space is a regular requirement. The need to ensure that excessive loading does not damage the floor covering by the ball castors used is also a requirement.
Statement of Invention
To provide a solution to the above is to retract the ball castors so that the item is left supported on its base when not being moved. The ball castor has pneumatic or fluid suspension to avoid points of high loading on an uneven suthce.
Advantages The Retractable Ball Castor provides a facility to seat equipment firmly on the floor when in use or storage but provides a means of easy movement when required.
The pneumatic or fluid suspension eliminates the uneven distribution of loads between castors when the equipment is being moved.
Detailed Description
The description refers to the drawings on the attached sheets Fig.! Fig. 2 and the illustrations Fig. 3 and Fig. 4.
The piston element (4) moves freely in cylinder (1). The piston seals (4) prevent the egress of fluid or air from the cylinder. The retaining clip (5) retains the piston within the cylinder (1). The proprietary ball castor (3) is attached to the piston (2).
When at rest the ball castor is pushed back into the cylinder Fig. 1. During operation fluid or air supplied under pressure flows into the cylinder (1) through connector (6) and pipe (7). The fluid or air forces the piston (2) out of the cylinder (1) as far as the retaining ring (5). This pushes the ball castor out of the cylinder (1) into contact with the floor or surfce the equipment is supported by the bottom flange on cylinder (1).
Removing the pressurised fluid or air supply allows the ball castor to be pushed back into the cylinder.
The control of the fluid or air supply (6&7) pressure adjusts the loading of the ball to the floor or surface eliminating damage and allows movement of the piston in and out to provide a suspension.
Claims (5)
- Claims 1. A ball castor assembly that is retained in a retracted position and can be extended outwards by pressurised fluid or air and provide a fluid or air cushioned suspension.
- 2. A ball castor assembly as in claim 1 in which the ball castor is attached to a piston operating in a cylinder with one open end through which the ball castor may project, the piston being retained in the cylinder by a circular ring fitted into a groove in the cylinder.
- 3. A ball castor assembly as in claim 1 is given a suspension capability by the control of the pressure of the fluid or air supplied.
- 4. A ball castor assembly as in claim 1 is retracted at a controlled rate by controlling the fluid or air flow from the cylinder.
- 5. A ball castor assembly as in claim 1 that is retained in its position by a flange fitted to the outside of the cylinder.
