Abstract

An end-cap fitting component allows a T5 fluorescent tube 3 to be used in a holder for a T8 or T12 tube. The component includes push-fit type end caps with two non-conductive pins 6. The component does not receive power from the original light fitting or use any of its components, but instead has three terminals (4, Fig 1) to allow the adaptor to be connected directly to incoming mains power, including an earth. A cover 5 covers the terminals, which may be colour-coded.

Description

DESCRIPTION
A Push-Fit Type End-Cap Mains Power Connector Fitting Component for use on T8 to T5 fluorescent tube Retro-fit T5 Electronic Adaptors.
This device relates to linear fluorescent light tubes and fittings. Standard fluorescent light fittings used in the Europe and throughout the world are known as T8 and T12's. They use T8 and 112 type fluorescent tubes. The T12 tube has a l.5"I 35mm diameter and the T8 a 1 "/25mm diameter. The length of the tube varies depending on the light output required.
More efficient fluorescent tubes are now available using new technology known as T5.
The T5 fluorescent tube has a smaller (5/8" / 16mm) diameter than the TX and T12 tubes. T5 fluorescent tubes are also shorter in length than the corresponding power 18 and Ti 2 fluorescent tubes. The T5 is therefore smaller in diameter and shorter in length than corresponding power output T8 and T12 tubes.
However, in order to use T5 tubes a new, dedicated T5 High Frequency Ballast light fitting has to be used. T5 tubes cannot be used in existing T8 / T12 light fittings because they have different dimensions and require a different, high frequency power uppIy.
If T5 lighting is required in place of T8 I T12 lighting the existing fitting has to be completely removed and a new, dedicated 15 light fitting installed in its place.
The replacement of the complete TX I Tl2 light fittings by new, dedicated T5 light fitting is an expensive installation procedure. It is also a waste of much material.
An invention to overcome the problem of replacing the TX and T12 light fittings and its inefficient control gear and allowing energy efficient and more environmentally friendly T5 tubes to be used in existing T8 and Tl2 light fittings and to operate without the use of any of the existing electrical components, wiring or electrical fittings was invented and submitted to the Patents Office App. GB 0718668.7 Ref AT5.
This invention (Ref GB 0718668.7) has a 230v socket / plug in the end-cap fitting which allows mains power to the Reiro-Fit T5 light unit and allows the device to operated without the use of any of the existing and previously used electrical or electronic control gear or components which are fitted inside the existing T8 / T12 fitting. This incoming mains power socket / plug only allows for 2 wire (live and neutral) connection and has no 3 wire / earth connection facility.
DESCRIPTION
A Push-fit type End-cap Mains Power Connector Fitting Component for use on T8 to T5 fluorescent tube Retro-fit T5 Electronic Adaptors.
This application (Ref AT5-Push Fit Connector) relates to the same T5 Retro-Fit Adaptor invention ( Ref App No. GB 071 8668.7) and also allows the T5 Adaptor to operate without the use of any of the existing and previously used electrical or electronic control gear or components which are fitted inside the existing T8 / T12 fitting.
This application if for a alternative end-cap component with 3 push-fit integral color coded connector terminals which allows 230v earth, positive and neutral wires to be connected directly from the incoming 230v power supply.
This type of 3 wire (earth / live / neutral) connection is required in installations which demand 3 wire connection and in countries, installations and on applications were the 2 wire ( live / neutral) socket / plug end-cap component cannot be used.
The use of this push-fit end-cap component allows the complete retro-fitted T5 lighting to operate independently of all existing electrical components, all of the which are by-passed, disconnected and made redundant when the Retro-Fit T5 Unit is installed.
It is designed to allow mains connections to retro-fit installations which require 3 wire connection (earth / neutral / live) from the incoming mains 230v power to the T5 Retro-Fit Adaptor and were lighting standards require or recommend 3 wire connection.
This end-cap component has 2 end-pins which protrude from the end of the component and allow the complete 15 Retro-Fit to be installed in the existing tube holders in the existing T8 fitting. These 2 end pins are non-conductive and therefore do not carry an electrical current.
The 2 end-pins on the end-cap component are only to allow installation and to hold the complete T5 Retro-Fit Assembly in place in the existing T8 / T12 fitting.
DESCRIPTION
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1: Shows a side view of the push-fit end-cap component [Number I] attached to the T5 Retro-Fit Adaptor [Number 2] with fluorescent tube [Number 3] installed. The end-cap component is fitted and fixed at manufacture and the T5 Retro-Fit device is installed as one complete assembly. The drawing shows the exposed 3 push-fit connector fittings [Nwnber 4] When the 3 wires are connected cover(s) can be fixed into place to cover the connector fittings.
FIGURE 2: Shows a side view of the push-fit end-cap component attached to the T5 Retro-Fit Device.
When the 3 wires are connected a plastic cover piece(s) [Number 5] can be fixed into place to cover the exposed connector fittings.
The cover fitting [Number 5 J is used to cover the exposed connectors and were required can be fixed to hold and clamp the incoming 3 wires were such an installation is required.
FIGURE 3: Shows the end-cap component with 2 non-conductive pins [Number 6] that protrude from this component. These 2 pins are non-conductive and their function is to hold the complete assemble in place when installed in the existing light fitting.
