Description
LIGHTING DEVICE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention
[0001] The present invention relates to a lighting device, and in particular to an assembly that is constituted by a body comprising a base forming at least one raised portion, a concentrator, and a coupling portion, at least one light-emitting diode, a circuit board forming at least one opening, and a head, wherein by means of fitting engagement between the raised portion of the base of the body and the opening of the circuit and the body being made of conductive materials, improved light concentration, enhanced heat dissipation, reduction of manufacturing costs, and simplification of assembling process can be realized, and wherein the lighting device is suitable for lighting for offices, household applications, exhibition sites, and public areas and similar environments.
The Related Arts (0002] Light-emitting diodes are getting wider and wider applications nowadays. And as a result, power supplied to the light-emitting diodes must be increasingly heightened. However, continuous lighting of the light-emitting diode results in accumulation of a large amount of heat. The accumulation of heat deteriorates light emission efficiency of the light-emitting diode and further accelerates temperature increase of the light-emitting diode. In a conventional device that incorporates a light-emitting diode uses simply a circuit board to which the light-emitting diode is mounted to dissipate the heat.
This makes it very inefficient to remove the heat generated by the operation of the light-emitting diode, eventually leading to over-heating and thus damage of the light-emitting diode. Further, the light-emitting diode is arranged on the circuit board so that the accumulation of heat may cause damage to the circuit board. This problem is particularly severe in lighting facility that employs high brightness or ultra-high brightness light-emitting diodes for they have to handle
I
problems of deterioration of material and reduction of service life caused by the high temperature.
[0003] The conventional light-emitting diode based lighting device comprises a focusing lens, at least one light-emitting diode, a conductive layer, a metal substrate, a housing, a heat dissipater, and a head. The housing is centrally recessed with a base arranged therein. The base forms a through hole and the base forms a receiving space therebelow. An inside surface of the housing that is located above and surrounds a circumference of the base is provided with a reflective layer. The focusing lens is arranged above the housing. The light-emitting diode is electrically connected to the metal substrate and the metal substrate is provided with circuit patterns. The light-emitting diode is coupled to the base of the housing. The heat dissipater is coupled outside the housing or below the base of the housing. The head is coupled below the base of the housing and is electrically connected to the circuit board.
[0004] With such a conventional arrangement, to dissipate heat generated by the light-emitting diode, the heat must be first transmitted to the metal substrate below the light-emitting diode and then transmitted through the metal substrate and the housing to the heat dissipater located outside the housing or below the base of the housing. Apparently, there are many interfaced media in the course of heat transmission, which retards the transmission of heat and reduces the speed and efficiency of heat transfer. Further, the conventional arrangement needs a focusing lens located above the light-emitting diode and the inside surface of the housing has to be coated with a reflective layer to effect concentration of light. Apparently, the conventional arrangement needs a large number of parts and a complicated assembling process and increased costs.
[0005] In view of the above discussed problems, the present invention is aimed to provide a lighting device that overcomes the drawbacks of the conventional light-emitting diode based lighting devices.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0006] Thus, an objective of the present invention is to provide a lighting device, wherein a movable fitting is formed between a circuit board the forming at least one opening and a body having a base that forms at least one raised portion, with the body being made of conductive materials, a light-emitting diode being arranged to span over the opening of the circuit board, to thereby eliminate isolation caused by the circuit board and further with a bottom of the light-emitting diode coupled to the raised portion of the base of the body, so that heat can be efficiently dissipated and temperature of the light-emitting diode can be kept low, with a consequence of enhanced heat dissipation rate and extension of service life of the light-emitting diode and improved overall practicability.
[0007] Another objective of the present invention is to provide a lighting device that has an integrally formed structure of a body composed of a base, a concentrator, and a coupling portion to reduce the number of parts and reduce manufacturing and assembling costs thereby realizing improved overall practicability.
[0008] A further objective of the present invention is to provide a lighting device, which has a concentrator made of metallic conductive materials for effecting reflection of light emitted from the light-emitting diode and guiding the transmission of the light in the forwards direction to realize concentration of light and which comprises heat dissipation fins formed on an outside surface of the concentrator so that the concentrator can effect both light concentration and heat dissipation to further improve overall practicability.
[0009] Yet a further objective of the present invention is to provide a lighting device wherein a coupling portion of a body and a coupling portion of a head are coupled together in a releasable manner so that the head can be replaced with one satisfying specifications of MR-16 and E27 standards to further extend the application of the lighting device of the present invention and thus further improving overall practicability thereof.
[0010] To achieve the above objectives, in accordance with the present invention, there is provided a lighting device comprising a body, a circuit board forming at least one opening, at least one light-emitting diode, and a head, wherein the body is made of conductive materials and is of a structure constituted by a base forming at least one raised portion, a concentrator, and a coupling portion and the at least one opening of the circuit board mates the at least one raised portion of the base of the body to thereby movably fit the circuit board to the body. The light-emitting diode spans over the opening of the circuit board and is electrically connected to the circuit board to thereby have bottom of the light-emitting diode coupled to the raised portion of the base of the body. The head has a coupling portion that is releasably coupled to the coupling portion of the body. As such, improved light concentration, enhanced heat dissipation, simplification of assembling, and reduction of costs can be realized.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
[0017] With reference to the drawings and in particular to Figures 1-4, a lighting device constructed in accordance with the present invention comprises a body 10, which is made of conductive materials, such as metals or other conductive materials. The body 10 comprises a base 11, a concentrator 12, and a coupling portion 13. The body 10 has a centrally recessed configuration with the base 11 forming a bottom thereof and a receiving space being formed above the base 11 and having an upward- facing opening. On the base 11, a raised portion 111 is formed, and also formed through the base 11 is at least one through hole 112 to provide a passage for electrical connection. Two such through holes 112 are provided in the base 11 in the embodiment illustrated. The concentrator 12 is arranged on the base 11 and surrounds a circumference of the base 11. Further, the body 10 comprises a plurality of heat dissipation fins 14 that is formed on and outward extends from an outer surface of the concentrator 12. The coupling portion 13 is arranged below the base 11. The body 10 further forms a receiving space below the base 11, which receiving space functions to for example accommodate a driving/control circuit (not shown) of the lighting device. The base 11, the concentrator 12, and the coupling portion 13 of the body 10 can be formed integrally as a unitary member, or they can be separate parts that are secured together by means of adhesives, fithng, locking, engaging, and the likes.
[0018] A circuit board 20 forms an opening 21 corresponding in shape and position to the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10 and has circuits arranged around the opening 20. The opening 21 of the circuit board 20 is releasably fit over the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10. The circuit board 20 is provided with two conductive wires that extend, respectively, through the through holes 22 of the base 11 of the body 10. The circuit board can be fixed to the body 10 by means of adhesives, fitting, locking, engaging, and the likes, and in the embodiment illustrated, screwing is adopted to secure the circuit board 20 to the body 10. Thus, the base 11 of the body 10 is provided with at least one threaded hole 113 (which are two in the embodiment illustrated) and the circuit board 20 is provided with at least one through hole 22 (which are two in the embodiment illustrated). With the through holes 22 of the circuit board 20 and the threaded hole 113 of the base 11 of the body 10 being set to correspond to each other respectively, screws 23 may extend through the through holes 22 of the circuit board 20 to engage the threaded holes 113 of the base 11 of the body 10.
[0019] The lighting device of the present invention comprises at least one light-emitting diode 30, which is arranged above and spans across the opening 21 of the circuit board 20. Positive and negative electrodes of the light-emitting diode 30 are electrically connected to the circuit board 20. The light-emitting diode 30 has a seat 31 and a plurality of legs 32. The legs 32 functions to connect the light-emitting diode 30 to the circuit board 20 at opposite sides of the opening 21 by means of for example soldering. In the embodiment illustrated, the number of the light-emitting diode 30 is one, which is selected in accordance with the single opening 21 of the circuit board 20 and the single raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10. If desired, the light-emitting diode 30 can be further provided with a thermal conduction layer between a bottom of the light-emitting diode 30 and the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10. The thermal conduction layer 40 can be for example a thermally conductive plastic film, a thermal pad, or a layer of thermal grease.
[0020] A head 50 has a coupling portion 51, which is matingly connectable to the coupling portion 13 of the body 10. The head 50 is electrically connected to the wires that extend from the circuit board 20 through the through holes 112 of the base 11 of the body 10. In the embodiment illustrated, the coupling portion 51 of the head 50 takes the form of at least one projection extending from the head 50, and in correspondence thereto, the coupling portion 13 of the body 10 comprises a hole or slot corresponding in shape and location to the projection of the coupling portion 51 of the head.
With the projection of the coupling portion 51 of the head 50 received in and engaging the hole or slot of the coupling portion 13 of the body 10, the body 10 and the head 50 are coupled together. Further, in other practical applications, the head 50 and the body 10 can be fixed together by means of adhesives, fitting, locking, engaging and the likes. The head 50 can be of standard
specification of MR-16, E27, and the likes.
[0021] With such an arrangement, to assemble, the legs 32 of the light-emitting diode 30 are first soldered to the connection circuits of the circuit board 20. The opening 21 of the circuit board 20 is fit over the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body and with the light-emitting diode 30 soldered to the connection circuits on the opposite sides of the opening 21 of the circuit board 20. The seat 31 of the light-emitting diode 30 forms a receptacle 33 having a bottom sitting on the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10 that is fit in the opening 21 of the circuit board 20. In the embodiment illustrated, the circuit board 20 and the body 10 are connected by means of screws 23 that extend through the through holes 22 of the circuit board 20 and engage the threaded holes 113 of the base 11 of the body 10. With the wires of the positive and negative electrodes connecting to and extending from the connection circuits of the circuit board 20, the wires extend through the through holes 112 of the base 11 of the body 10 and further extend into holes defined in the head 50 to form electrical connection with the head 50. The coupling portion 13 of the body 10 is then put into engagement with the coupling portion 51 of the head 50 to secure the body 10 and the head 50 together. This completes the assembling of the lighting device in accordance with the present invention.
[0022] Figure 5 shows another embodiment of the present invention, in which a base 11 of a body 10 forms four raised portions 111 and a circuit board correspondingly forms four openings 21. Each opening 21 is associated with at least one light-emitting diode 30 spanning thereover. In a practical application, each opening 21 is associated with a plurality of light-emitting diodes 30 and the head 50 takes a form that meets the specification of E27 standard receptacle. Apparently, the head 50 can be of different forms of different specifications. To summarize, in use, the base 11 of the body 10 forms at least one raised portion 111 and the circuit board 20 forms at least one opening 21. The at least one opening 21 and the at least one raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10 mate each other to couple the circuit board to the base 11 of the body 10. The head 50 that is coupled to the body 10 can be of any desired specification and can be replaced with a part in the form of a receptacle of MR-16 or E27 standards.
[0023] Referring to Figures 1-5, the lighting device in accordance with the present invention is characterized by a combined structure of a body 10 that is constituted by at least one light-emitting diode 30, a circuit board 20 forming at least one opening 21, a base 11 having at least one raised portion 111, a concentrator 12, and a coupling portion 13 and a head 50, wherein the at least one opening 21 of the circuit board 20 and the at least one raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body 10 are fit and thus fixed to each other, and light-emitting diode 30 is arranged to span over the opening 21 of the circuit board 20 to have the light-emitting diode 30 directly coupled to and above the raised portion 111 of the base 11 of the body without any portion of the circuit board 20 intervening therebetween so that isolation that might be effected by the circuit board 20 is eliminated and further due to the fact that the base 11 of the body 10 is made of conductive materials, heat or thermal energy can be efficiently dissipated and the temperature of the light-emitting diode 30 reduced. In addition, the concentrator 12 is made of conductive materials, such as metal and the likes, functioning to reflect and concentrate diffracting fractions of light generated by the light-emitting diode 30 and thereby guide the light to transmit in a forward direction and the concentrator 12 is further provided with heat dissipation fins 14 so that the concentrator 12 features both light concentration and heat dissipation. Further, with the body 10 being an integrally formed unitary part, the number of parts of the lighting device can be reduced and the costs for manufacturing and assembling can also be reduced.
In addition, the head 50 is coupled to the body 10 in a releasable manner so that the head 50 can be of any desired specifications of for example MR-16 and E27 standards, thereby extending the application of the lighting device of the present invention, and realizing enhanced light concentration and heat dissipation, extension of service life of light-emitting diode 30, simplification of manufacturing and assembling, and reduction of costs, and consequently providing overall improvement of practicability and utilization.
[00241 Although the present invention has been described with reference to the preferred embodiments thereof, it is apparent to those skilled in the art that a variety of modifications and changes may be made without departing from the scope of the present invention which is intended to be defined by the appended claims.
