Abstract

A hinged binding system for a folder, menu cover and ring binders for example, comprises a front and back cover and a spine made from wood or a similar material with a wooden veneer (c), a hinge made from a polypropylene (b) that is embedded into the front and back cover and the spine, and covered with a veneer of wood (a). Preferably the folder, menu cover and ring binder are made from a veneered or solid wood (c), and routed to along the length of the binding to form a recess (d, fig 1), into which the polypropylene (b) is bonded, and a wood veneer (a) bonded to the polypropylene. 90 degree grooves (g) are cut along the length of the spine, two along each side. The grooves do not cut into the polypropylene, thereby allowing the polypropylene to act as a hinge.

Description

I
Hinge System This invention relates to a binding system for folders, menu covers, and ring binders.
Many menu covers and presentation folders are made with wooden veneered MDF or solid wood covers. This invention proposes a method of using polypropylene and wood veneer to create a hidden hinge binding to look like part of the wooden folder.
This negates the need for other systems of bindings such as leather or large complicated metal or wooden hinges.
The invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows an isometric view of the 3 separate components.
Figure 2 shows the same separate component view as figure 1, in a cross section view.
Figure 3 shows the 3 components fitted together Figure 4 shows the routing detail Figure 5 shows the piece bent to make the hinge.
In figure 1 and 2 (two different views of the same stage) we see the 3 separate components needed for the binder; Wood veneer (a), Polypropylene (b), and Veneered MDF / Solid Wood (c). The veneered MDF / solid wood should be routered through with a recess (d) to a depth and width equal to the wood veneer and the polypropylene.
The polypropylene is corona treated to allow bonding easier. The 3 components are then bonded using contact adhesive into the recessed veneered MDF / solid wood, seen in figure 3.
The next stage of the process, shown in figure 4. is to router a groove, using a 9Odegree router cutter. It should be the length of the binding, and cut through the wood veneer on one side (e) and the venecred MDF / solid wood on the other side (f).
The router cut should cut through the wood veneer and the mdf/wood, but not cut through the polypropylene. Figure 5 shows how the polypropylene then acts as a hinge, holding the binding together as it is folded to 90 degrees. All 3 separate components are indicated again, along with the routered groove (g).
