Abstract
A device to aid a golf player in aligning or putting having a clear plastic body, which may be sized to use with a score card. Said device having a suspension hole B which may be used to suspend the device from, allowing it to self align with horizontal and vertical planes. The device may be marked with intersecting horizontal and vertical lines C and D. In use the device may be suspended via a pencil placed in the hole B, the device finds its own natural level and the golf player aligns a golf flag G (figure 1) by placing the hole F at the intersection of the lower of two of the intersecting lines C and D. The player then can determine if the golf flag is parallel to the vertical line. The further away from the vertical indicates the amount of slope on the green or fairway.
Description
Title:-TRU-PUTT
Description 1 44
Background
The Tru-putt is a training aid for the game of golf, and the reading of golf greens in particular.
The term, reading of golf greens, means the golfer has to work out where, and how hard, to strike the golf ball with the putter in order for the ball to fall into the hole.
The golf ball may be lying on the golf green at various positions and distances following the golfers previous shot.
As Golf greens are all different, The golfer has to assess or read' each green individually. The following points are all aspects that a Golfer will have to take into account when reading the green before they strike their putt.
Golf greens are never flat and are made up of random slopes and contours. The type of grass, which makes up the surface of the green itself, varies in type and grain.
The term grain' refers to the direction that the grass grows.
Some Golfers have difficulty in reading greens leading to misread or under or over hit putts.
Even some professional golfers can have difficulty in reading greens. Professional golfers have devised a method where they can be seen holding their putter as a plumb bob.
This involves holding the putter by the end of the putter grip with thumb and forefinger with an outstretched arm, and allows it to hang freely.
The golfer then closes one eye and uses the other eye to compare the perpendicular, putter's shaft, against the green contours and putting green hole.
This helps the golfer to identify the directions of slopes and contours, which assists the Golfer in deciding on the strength and direction of the putt.
The Tru-Putt is a Golf training aid based on, and expanding on, this tried and tested Method.
It is designed to fit inside a golf scorecard but not restricted to size, and to be used during training and non-competition games of golf.
The continued use of the Tru-Putt will enable the Golfer to easily pick out subtle slopes and contours leading to more consistent putting.
The continued use of the Tru-putt will help the golfer learn and remember the breaks on regularly used courses.
The golfer will also learn how to read greens and what to look for when playing competition rounds without the Tru-Putt.
The Tru-putt is used in much the same way as the method described above regarding the Golfer using the putter in a plumb Bob fashion (figure 1).
The golfer passes his score card pencil through the hole (figures 1 and2 ( and grips it with thumb and forefinger, and holds it out with an outstretched arm aiming at the flag or hole on the green and allows the Tru-puft to settle level (figure 1). The golfer then closes one eye, and using the other eye, lines the vertical line (figure 3 (D) with the point where the flag meets the hole (figure 1 (F.
The putt is then viewed by Looking at the plumb line marked onto the Tru-putt (Figure 3 (D), compared to the flag (figure 1 (G), and the level lines (Figure 3 (C andfigure 1) on the Tru-putt (Figure 3 (A) compared with the contours of the green.
The Golfer can repeat this process from the side and back of the putt. The Golfer will then have a good idea of how to make the putt based on the information gained from this process.
TRU-PUTT Description continued
The Tm-Putt (figure 3 (A) is made from a transparent material designed to prove the best clarity. The preferred material is acrylic Perspex, but not confined to that material. The desired effect could be achieved by use of a variety of materials such as Clear plastics and glass.
The preferred size of the Tru-putt in terms of weight reduction and size, would be 130mm x 80mm (Figure 3 (A), x 2mm (Figure 4 (E), forming a rectangular shape, but the Tru-putt is not restricted to these sizes or shape.
The Tru-putt transparent material would have smooth edges and slightly rounded corners (Figure 3 (K) to be user friendly and smooth to fit in the pocket of the golfer, if made to suit score card size.
The Tru-putt will have a single hole (figure 3 (B), midway along the long edge close to the top.
This hole will be perfectly central to allow the Tru-puft to hang perfectly level when a pencil is passed through (Figure 2 ( and figure 1). The hole will be 7mm set close to the top edge of the Tru-putt, which will allow an average pencil to pass through with just enough clearance to allow the Tru-putt to find its own level.
This hole will preferably be 7mm in diameter to enable a pencil or golf tee to pass through to act as a pivot (figure 2 (1).
The Tru-Putt will preferably have, but not restricted to a single central vertical line (Figure 3 (D) and 2 horizontal lines (figure 3 (C), one near the bottom edge and one approx a third of the way up. This is the desired appearance to allow simple alignment and to maximise clarity (Figure 3).
The Tru-Putt alignment lines (Figure 3 (D and C) would preferably be black but could be in any chosen colour.
The lines can be formed using a variety of methods, for example, they can be scribed into the face of the lens, or scored, applied by silk screening or printed.
The required method to use the Tru-putt would be to insert a pencil through the hole (Figure 3 (B). The golfer would then grip the pencil with the thumb and forefinger of the same hand and allow the Tru-Putt to settle until still, which would find its own level position (figure 2 (J) and figure 1) Whilst viewing through the Tru-putt, The golfer would then simply align the vertical line (Figure 3 (D) with the flag or hole with the horizontal line (figure 3 (C) below the flag or hole (Figure 1 (G and F). This will highlight the levels, breaks and slopes (figure 1).
It is recommended to repeat this process from different positions, behind and ahead of the putt, and to either side. This allows the Golfer to judge the direction and weight of his putt accordingly.
