Description

BODY PROTECTION PADS
This invention relates to body protection pads.
More particularly, this invention relates to disposable self-adhesive protection pads which are suitable for protecting various parts of a person's body including knees, elbows, wrists, shins and shoulders.
The disposable self-adhesive protection pads of the invention are especially suitable for protecting knee caps. Knee pads are widely used by many workers including gardeners, plumbers, mechanics, electricians, carpet layers, house keepers, do-it-yourselfers and many other occupations using a kneeling position However, many such workers do not use knee pads because conventional knee pads tend to be uncomfortable and must he strapped to the wearer's legs. Furthermore, whether the knee pads are strapped to the outside or inside of the wearer's legs, the straps must hold the pads tightly to the wearer's legs in order to keep the pads in place on the wearer's knees. As a result, the straps can severely interfere with the blood circulation in the legs, particularly when the pads have to he worn continuously over long periods of time. Moreover, the surfaces on which the workers kneel may be hard, gritty, abrasive and/or damp and muddy. Consequently, if knee pads are not worn, knees become sore, clothing becomes dirty and wears quickly and become wet and remains uncomfortable for the remainder of the day.
An object of this invention is to provide protective body pads which eliminate the need for straps to retain the pads on the parts of the body which are to be protected.
A further object of the invention is to provide protection body pads which are self-adhesive and which can be quickly and easily donned and removed by the wearer.
Another object of the invention is to provide body protection pads of simple construction which are easy and cheap to manufacture and which can be thrown away after a single use.
Yet another object of the invention is to provide protective body pads which are made of a material which does not harm the wearer's skin or clothing.
More particularly, an object of the invention is to provide a strapless, disposable self-adhesive knee pad which does not bind behind the wearer's knee hence avoiding interference with blood circulation in the wearer's leg.
According to the present invention a disposable self-adhesive protection pad for protecting various parts of a wearer's body comprises: (a) a flexible cushioning substrate of closed cell or microcellular cross-linked expanded polyolefin foam which is capable of being wrapped around the contours of the body part to be protected when pressed onto the skin of the body part or the clothing covering the body part; (b) a layer of a pressure sensitive adhesive covering a surface of the foamed substrate and which removeably adheres to the wearer's skin or clothing without damaging the skin or clothing; and (c) a layer of protective film covering the adhesive layer which is suitable for peeling off from the adhesive layer prior to the adhesive covered foamed substrate being applied to the body part to be protected.
Preferably, the flexible substrate is a closed cell cross-linked nitrogen expanded low density polyethylene foam.
Further preferably, the foamed substrate is provided with cut-out portions at its edges to assist the substrate in retaining its position when fitted onto and around the body part to be protected.
Conveniently, the foamed substrate is provided with a plurality of perforations to give the foamed substrate breathability and also to assist the substrate in retaining its position when fitted onto and around the body part to be protected.
Preferably, the adhesive is an acrylic, acrylate or rubber adhesive.
Conveniently, the adhesive is a double-sided adhesive tape.
Preferably, the protective film covering the adhesive is waxed paper.
The disposable self-adhesive protection pad of the invention is suitable for the protection of knees, elbows, wrists, ankles, shins and shoulders.
A knee pad embodiment of the invention will now be described, simply by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a knee pad in accordance with the invention which illustrates the extruded flat profile of the knee pad.
Figure 2 is a side view of the knee pad of Figure I which illustrates the layer construction of the knee pad.
Figure 3 is a view of a trouser leg to which has been attached the knee pad of Figure I. Figure 4 is a view which shows how the knee pad of Figure 1 conforms to the shape of the wearer's knee when the wearer is in the kneeling position.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, a disposable strapless self-adhesive knee pad I according to the invention consists of a thin flat flexible profiled foamed substrate 2 having one surface 3 (the knee facing surface) covered with a thin layer 4 of a pressure sensitive adhesive which in turn is covered with a thin peel-off protective film 5. The foamed substrate 2 is dimensioned to fit over the knee of a large adult and is 5 to 6 mm thick, 21 cm high and 15 cm wide. These dimensions give the wearer adequate protective cover for the knees when the wearer is in the kneeling position. The foamed substrate 2 is provided with two frusto-conical side cut out portions 6 and 7 and a U-shaped top cut out portion 8. When the knee pad is positioned on a knee, its side and top edges are bent over to fit around the contours of the knee (see Figure 4). The cut out portions 6, 7 and 8 prevent the bent over top and bent over side edges of the knee pad from springing back to the flat position and falling off the knee. The foamed substrate 2 is also provided with a plurality of minute perforations (not shown) which give the knee pad breathability and also further assist in preventing the bent over top and side edges of the foamed substrate 2 from springing backwards away from the knee-cap.
Each knee pad I is fitted to a knee of the wearer as follows. The protective backing film 4 is peeled off the adhesive layer 3 just prior to the fitting of the knee pad 1. The adhesive layer 3 on the foamed substrate 2 is then pressed onto and around the knee area of the wearer's trouser leg with the U-shaped cut out portion 8 uppermost. The top edge and the two side edges of the foamed substrate 2 are then bent over the knee so as to cling to the wearer's knee utilising the adhesive layer 3. Preferably, a knee pad I is fitted to each knee when the wearer is seated. When the wearer has completed his work task, the knee pads are removed from the knees by peeling them off slowly from the wearer's trouser legs.
Prolonged investigations have been conducted by the inventor in order to determine the optimum shape, dimensions and materials for constructing the knee pad of the invention.
For instance, many foam materials do not have good adhesive properties. Also, the preferred foam material has to be able to withstand compression and at the same time cannot be too hard or too soft so that it possesses the desired degree of bendability and cushioning. Furthermore, the foam material has to be a material which does not fall apart in lumps and is not easily torn. Another important feature of the foam material is that it should provide protection against hard objects and so the thickness of the foamed substrate 2 has to be carefully balanced between being sufficiently protective and at the same time having the flexibility to follow the contours of the knee. Eventually, the inventor determined that the optimum foamed substrate 2 should be made of closed cell or microcellular cross-linked expanded polyethylene foam having a thickness of 5 to 6 mm and an approximate hardness of shore A40. Such an optimum foam is an excellent shock absorber and cushioning material and provides a knee pad which gives the knee considerable comfort on gravel surfaces and hard floors In the course of the testing, the inventor found that thickness greater than 6 mm gave knee pads which peeled off prematurely from the trouser legs to which they were applied and that thicknesses less than 5mm gave knee pads which became less effective in absorbing kneeling pressure.
Finally, the inventor also found that the other dimensions and shape of the knee pad were very important. The height and width of the knee pad had to present an adequately large surface so to ensure adhesion of sufficiently long detention and the shape of the knee pad had to be such that it would hug and cling to the knee. The inventor found that a suitable foamed material is FT4OP closed cell cross-linked expanded polyethylene foam supplied by Foam Techniques Limited of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England.
FT4OP foam is closed cell cross-linked nitrogen expanded low density polyethylene Plastazote (RTM) LD4S foam manufactured by Zotefoams Plc of Croydon, England and has the following data characteristics: Property Test Method Units Typical Value ISO 845 1995 Density BS 4443 Ptl 2 1988 kg/rn3 45 Skin/Skin (sis) DIN 53420 1978 Recommended operating Internal Max °C +110 temperature range Miri°C 1 -70 Compression stress -strain EN ISO 3386/1 1997 characteristics BS 443 Ptl 5a 1988 125% Compression DIN 53572 1986 FkPA 50 40% Compression kPA I 90 50% Compression IkPA 135 60% Compression IkPA 210 Compression set EN ISO 1856 1996 s/s thickness BS 4443 Ptl 6b 1988 ____ 22 % set 72 hrs 50% compression DIN 53572 1986 23°C, 1/2 hr recovery 48 hrs 20% compression I 1 123°C, hr recovery EN ISO 1856 1996 N/rn 1030 Tear strength lBS 4443 Pt6* 15 1991 I Tensile strength ISO 1798 1983 I BS4443Pt1 3a1988 kPA 600 DIN 53571 1986 fElongation at break % -150 - [ISO 1663 1981 Temperature = 38°C Relative lBS 4370 Pt2 8 1993 pg/m2/sec I 24 humidity gradient' DIN 53429 1971 Permeability I nglPa/s/m I 0 1 Sample = 25mm thick IWater absorption DIN 53428 1986 i Day 1% vol <0 1 7 Days 1% vol <0 3 114 Days 1% vol I <o 128 Days 1% vol 1 <0 5 Imermal conductivity Tested [ISO 8302 1991 I ______________ lat mean temp of 10°C las 874 Pt2 2 11986 lW/rn K 0 043 Horizontal burning Iso 3582 1978 1 characteristics BS 4735 1974 I Thickness 5mm 1mm/sec 1 1 3 Thickness 13mm 1mm/sec 0.8 Pass at 5mm FMVSS 302 thickness and above [1S08681985 I Shore hardness 00 scale (mm BS 2782 Pt3 I 62 110mm c/c thickness) Method 365B 1992 I The adhesive of the knee pad of the invention also is of prime importance and it has to provide optimum capability and durability of contact with a variety of fabrics, plastics, hard surfaces and human skin. Furthermore, the adhesive should have a slow curing tack so as to ensure that it does not make a permanent contact with the wearer's clothes. Also the adhesive should be capable of providing medium to long term durability in damp, hot and other extreme conditions. Finally, it was recognised that some workers will wish to apply the knee pads directly onto the knee, e.g. workers wearing shorts. Accordingly, the adhesive should not be damaging to the skin and should cause no irritation or rashes. The inventor has found that adhesives which meet the above described criteria include rubber, acrylic and acrylate pressure sensitive adhesives which are designed to form a temporary bond which can be removed without leaving residue on skin or clothes. The inventor has found that a suitable adhesive is FT-153 which isa repositionable double sided adhesive tape based on acrylic and rubber adhesive and again is supplied by Foam Techniques Limited of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England. This adhesive has FDA approval.
The peel-off protective film 4 is applied to the adhesive fbr transportation and storage and it also prevents the adhesive from curing prematurely. Furthermore, the protective film 4 must be quickly removable and capable of being peeled off in one piece. Various protective film materials are available and the inventor has found that waxed paper is particularly suitable for this purposes.
The knee pad 1 of the invention is easy and simple to manufacture. The foamed substrate 2 is conveniently produced in sheet form by extrusion. The adhesive can be applied to the substrate 2 as a rolled on paste or it can be applied to the substrate 2 as a double sided adhesive tape as described above. The protective film 4 (e.g. waxed paper) is then applied over the adhesive layer 3. Finally, the preselected fiat profiled shape of the knee pad is stamped out from the three layered composite sheet. Various shapes can be used in making the composite but the shape illustrated in Figure 1 provides for minimum wastage of cut out material.
Modifications can be made to the specific knee pad embodiment described above For example, although the protective knee pad of the invention is inherently waterproof due to the closed cell or microcellular structure of the foamed substrate 2, the outer surface of the foamed substrate 2 could be provided with a thin waterproof coating of sorts for working in extremely damp conditions. Also, the outer surface of the foamed substrate 2 could be provided with a preformed hard moulded shell for working in extremely arduous conditions, e.g. very stony ground etc. Furthermore, in the specific embodiment described above, the cushioning component of the knee pad has been described as a flat sheet of flexible foamed substrate which can be bent to lit the contours of the body part requiring protection. However, it would be possible to provide the foamed substrate as a preformed moulded component shaped to fit onto the relevant body part. For example, in the case of a knee pad or shin pad, the foamed substrate could take the form of a preformed slightly arcuate moulded pad having a concave surface facing towards the knee or shin as the case may be. Furthermore, the protective body pads of the invention could be suitable as shoulder pads for backpackers.
The protective body pads of the invention offer the following advantages.
I) l'he pads, (particularly knee pads) do not restrict blood circulation due to the absence of binding straps.
2) The knee pads, in particular, remain comfortable even after kneeling for a very long time.
3) Because of the self-adhesive attachment, the body pads never fall off and always remain in place.
4) The body pads are easy and cheap to manufacture and therefore are disposable after a single wearing. However, if desired, they are capable of being used several times before being discarded.
5) The body parts of the invention fulfil the needs of a special niche market.
They are intended to provide a very inexpensive means of comfort and protection for a variety of workers, e.g. house decorators, gardeners, joiners, mechanics, plumbers, electricians, house keepers, carpet layers and do-it-yourselfers. The protective body pads of the invention are not intended to compete with large thick moulded profiled body pads for heavy duty work.
