Abstract

A method and vehicle system of blocking the actuation an on-board vehicle device 3 in dependence upon the signal status of a signalling system 2, whereby a vehicle 1 receives a signal transmitted by a signalling system 2 and containing information about the duration of a signal status of the signalling system 2. It is determined whether the actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3 may be completed within the duration of a current signal status and if not, the actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3 is blocked. The system may signal whether the actuation is possible, the actuation may be blocked or released if the vehicle is stationary in front of signals, and the actuation may be requested in advance and executed at the next suitable signals. The vehicle position may be determined by a navigation system and the signalling system distinguished by an identifier. The blocked actuation may be of a convertible or soft top, or the adjustment of a seat or steering wheel. The duration, beginning, or end of the signal status may be used, and the signal status may be transmitted on request by the vehicle or permanently.

Description

Description Title
Method of actuating an on-board vehicle device in dependence upon the signal status of a signalling system as well as an arrangement
Background art
The invention relates to a method of actuating an on-board vehicle device in dependence upon the signal status of a signalling system. An arrangement for this purpose is also the subject matter of the invention.
In vehicles the actuation of specific on-board vehicle devices, for example the opening or closing of the convertible top, is prevented if a defined velocity threshold is exceeded.
From tJS-2004/0225434 Al a vehicle navigation system is known, which transmits the signal status of a signalling system to a control unit of the navigation system. The navigation system therefore determines the time to a subsequent change of the signal status of the signalling system, in the case of a set of traffic lights the time to the change from green to red, in order to provide an audible or visual warning to the driver.
Disclosure of the invention
Advantages of the invention In the method according to the invention the vehicle receives a signal transmitted by a signalling system and containing information about the duration of a signal status of the signalling system and determines whether the actuation of an on-board vehicle device may be completed within the duration of a current signal status. Otherwise the actuation of the on-board vehicle device is blocked.
It is therefore possible effectively to prevent a vehicle becoming an obstacle to traffic if, when the vehicle is stationary in front of a signalling system, for example a red traffic light, and the actuation of an on-board vehicle device, for example opening of the convertible top, is requested, the vehicle is prevented from pulling away during actuation of the top despite the traffic lights having meanwhile changed to green. With the invention the actuation o the on-board vehicle device and/or the opening of the convertible top is blocked if the time to changing of the traffic light to green is insufficient to complete the operation of opening the convertible top. In this case, the vehicle is not prevented from pulling away from a green traffic light.
It is advantageous to signal in the vehicle whether the actuation of the on-board vehicle device may be completed within the duration of a current signal status of the signalling system or is blocked. This allows the driver to adapt rapidly to whether he may pull away soon at a green -.-2 light or the on-board vehic].e device is being actuated in the stationary state.
The information about the duration, and optionally the start, of the signal status of the signalling system may be transmitted either at the request of the vehicle or permanently. In the case of the former, a transmission device for emitting a request signal is needed in the vehicle. On the plus side, it is then possible to dispense with a constant readiness to receive a signal permanently emitted by the signalling system. In the case of permanent transmission of the signal status of the signalling system, a device for transmitting a request signal is not needed.
Nor do conflicts arise in the eventuality of a plurality of vehicles simultaneously emitting a request signal.
To prevent the actuation of the on-board vehicle device from not being possible, say, in a lay-by in front of the signalling system, the blocking is effected only if the vehicle is in a stationary state on a road in front of the signalling system.
It is advantageous that a request to actuate the on-board vehicle device may be entered in advance by the driver and stored and then implemented at the nearest possible signalling system having an adequate duration of the signal status indicating a compulsory stop of the vehicle. The actuation then occurs at the earliest possible opportunity, for example not until the next but one signalling system, without the driver having to worry any more about it or being distracted.
It is further advantageous to generate a blocking signal if the actuation of the on-board vehicle device cannot be completed within the duration of the signal status and to utilize this blocking signal to prevent the effective actuation of a time-critical on-board vehicle device, such as the opening or closing of the convertible top, adjustment of the driver seat or of the steering device.
It is therefore possible to avert dangerous traffic situations such as obstructing the view of other road users or restricting the ability of the driver to act.
It is also advantageous to combine the request to actuate the on-board vehicle device with when the vehicle comes to a standstill and when there is an adequate residual duration of the current signal status to enable the actuation of the on-board vehicle device. This increases safety.
The remaining claims disclose an arrangement and/or advantageous developments for the actuation of an on-board vehicle device in dependence upon the signal status of a signalling system that offer comparable advantages.
Description of the drawing
Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the functional units for implementing the invention.
Embodiments of the invention As Figure 1 reveals, a signalling system 2, for example a set of traffic lights, transmits information about its signal status to a motor vehicle 1. A receiving device 4 in the motor vehicle 1 receives and/or decodes this information and relays it to a driver information system 5 and/or an evaluation unit. In dependence upon the evaluated signal status of the signalling system 2 the actuation of one or more on-board vehicle devices 3 is enabled or blocked. The information about the signal status of the signalling system 2 may be the beginning of a green phase, the duration of a red phase and/or the beginning of the red phase or alternatively only the residual duration of the current signal status, particularly if the vehicle 1 is equipped with a transmission device 7 that transmits a request signal to the signalling system 2 in order to obtain information about the residual duration that the current signal status still has before the next phase change, for example the change from red to green. On the basis of this information the driver information system 5 assesses whether or not the effective actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3 may be completed within the duration of the current signal status -red phase -of the signalling system 2. If the signalling system 2 permanently transmits the information about its signal status, for example time of the beginning of the green phase, time of the phase change from green to red, duration of the red phase, it is possible for the vehicle 1 itself to calculate by means of an on-board vehicle clock the residual duration of a current signal phase and generate a blocking signal for the actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3 or produce a release signal.
It is also advantageous that the signalling system 2 transmits in each case an identifier to distinguish it from other signalling systems. Thus, the driver information system 5 possibly aided by its on-board navigation system 8 may determine that actuation of the on-board vehicle device, although not possible at the signalling system situated in the immediate vicinity, is possible at the next or next but one signalling system 2 along the travel route calculated by the navigation system 8. To ensure that the prohibition on actuation of the on-board vehicle device applies only in the stationary state on a road in front of a signalling system 2 and not, say, in a lay-by close to traffic lights, the position of the vehicle 1 may be determined by means of the navigation system 8. Detection of the stationary state of the vehicle 1 may be effected either by means of the navigation system 8 -no change of position -or by means of a separate detector 9 that is mostly installed in any case for other purposes in the vehicle 1, for example a wheel turning sensor. The request to actuate an on-board vehicle device 3 that is time-critical and/or accident-prone, for example the opening or closing of a convertible top, adjustment of the driver seat or of the steering device, may be signalled by means of a pushbutton 10 to the driver information system 5 and also stored so that a release signal for the on-board vehicle device 3 may be generated at the earliest opportunity, possibly not until the next but one set of traffic lights.
The fact that the pushbutton 10 is activated and/or the fact that the residual duration of the signal status is sufficient to complete the actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3 within this time, may be output for
J
example in a visual and/or audible form by means of the signalling device 6. Upon activation of the pushbutton 10, the navigation system 8 on the basis of position of the vehicle 1 and the position of the signalling system 2 may also take into account the time it will take to reach the signalling system 2 in order to initiate any preparatory functions for the effective actuation of the on-board vehicle device 3. Thus, the effective actuation may be initiated even with a low residual duration of the signal status that will be present when the vehicle 1 reaches the signalling system 2.
As receiving device 4 a car radio may be used or any other communication device that is an any case fitted in the vehicle 1, such as "car-to-car communication" or a cell phone. -.
