Abstract
A vision shield 1 comprises a housing having a top face 6 and side wall/s 3A, 4A, 4B depending from the top face 6. The side wall 4B has a side wall aperture 5 allowing entry of a person's hand inside the housing. The top face has a grid 7 allowing a restricted angle of viewing of the inside of the housing. The grid 7 may be provided with slats 7A and said slats may be pivotable in order to vary the viewing angle.
Description
Title: Vision Shield The present invention relates to a vision shield, and especially to a vision shield which prevents persons viewing data being entered into a keyboard such as PIN numbers being entered into a cash dispenser keyboard or credit card reader keyboard.
PIN numbers of credit and bank cards are often obtained by a criminal viewing a PIN number being entered into a keyboard by the authorised user of the card. The card can subsequently be stolen and used by the criminal.
It has been attempted to provide screens either side of keyboards, but an astute criminal can still read the numbers being entered by watching movement of fingers, and also hidden cameras are often placed above the keyboard by criminals.
The invention seeks to provide a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention there is provided a vision shield comprising a housing having a top face and side wall/s depending from said top face, said side wall/s having a side wall aperture allowing entry of a person's hand inside the housing, and said top face having a grid allowing a restricted angle of viewing of the inside of the housing.
Preferably the grid is part of a frame pivoted within an aperture on the top face, said pivoted grid allowing the restricted angle of viewing to be altered. Preferably the grid is limited in pivotal movement to an angle of 100 to 200, e.g. 15 o Preferably the grid is in the form of a frame with a plurality of parallel angled slats. Preferably the slats are angled 15 °to 350, especially 200 to 300 e.g. about 25° relative to the frame. The frame may be generally rectangular in one embodiment the housing has a generally rectangular footprint, with side walls formed from a pair of generally semi-circular opposing side walls and a pair of curved generally rectangular side end walls, said side and side end walls depending from a curved generally rectangular top face.
The housing may further comprise a base from which the side walls extend. The base may include an aperture allowing viewing of a keyboard.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a first embodiment, Figures 2A and 2B show cross section views of Figure 1, and Figure 3 shows an alternative embodiment to that shown in Figure 1.
Referring to Figure 1 there is shown a vision shield I. Shield I comprises a housing having a generally rectangular base 2. Extending up from base 2 are a pair of generally semi-circular opposing side walls 3A,3B and a pair of curved generally rectangular side end walls 4A,4B. End wall 4B has a side wall aperture 5 allowing entry of a person's hand inside the housing to operate a keyboard "X". Keyboard "X" may be a device to enter in a PIN when using a credit card to make a purchase.
Housing I has a curved top face 6 with a curved generally rectangular aperture therein supporting a grid in the form of a curved generally rectangular frame 7 with a plurality of parallel angled slats 7A. Frame 7 is pivoted to top face 6 by side lugs 8A,8B.
As shown in Figure 2B the grid is limited in pivotal movement to an angle of 150 (but this could be less or greater, e.g. between 100 to 200. As shown in Figure 2A, slats 7A are angled 25° relative to the frame (but this could be less or greater, e.g. between 15 ° 350, especially 200 to 30°), i.e. relative to a line normal to a tangent on the surface of the frame 7.
In use a person can place a hand inside the housing to enter a PIN into the keyboard "X". The grid formed by frame 7 with slats 7A restricts the angle of viewing of the inside of the housing to the angle "A" (see Figure 2A). In order to accommodate persons of different heights, the frame can be manually pivoted by 15° allowing the restricted angle of viewing to be altered.
The housing forms a shield to prevent criminals viewing a PIN number being entered into a keyboard by the authorised user of the card. Also the housing I prevents a camera hidden above the housing viewing a PIN number being entered into a keyboard by the authorised user of the card.
Housing 1 of Figure 1 is shown encasing a keyboard "X" to enter in a PIN when using a credit card to make a purchase. As shown in Figure 3, base 2 may include an aperture 2A, and the housing I can be placed over a keyboard "Y" of a cash dispenser. Keyboard "Y" can thus be viewed through aperture 2A.
The invention may take a form different to that specifically described above. For example the grid could be other than a frame with angled slats, e.g. an array of interl inked rows and columns of slates or a "honeycomb" type of array. The term gird thus covers any construction which limits a viewing angle.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the present invention.
