Abstract

A PIN terminal keypad shield comprising of an opaque body 1, a translucent panel 2 and louvre slats 3. The shield, when fitted to a PIN terminal keypad, will allow the card holder to see the keys and enter his/her PIN number but will prevent a bystander seeing or a hidden camera recording the PIN number being entered and thus will help prevent card fraud.

Description

PIN TERMINAL KEYPAD SHIELD This invention relates to a PIN terminal keypad shield. The existing shields on PIN terminal keypads do not prevent bystanders seeing or a hidden camera recording the PIN number being entered which could result in card fraud. The present invention comprises of a shield that is securely fitted onto existing or new PIN terminal keypads and is designed in such a way that only the card holder can see the PIN number being entered. The introduction of chip and PIN cards could increase card fraud if the card holder is careless about entering his/her PIN number in such a way that a bystander may observe the number entered. The shield will also prevent a PIN number from being recorded by a hidden camera. Preferably the main body of the shield is made of metal or a strong opaque plastics material, with a translucent panel on top made of a strong plastics material or glass. The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- FIGURE 1 shows a cross sectional side view of the shield (on X-X of Figure 2) as fitted to a PIN terminal keypad. FIGURE 2 shows a plan view of the shield. Referring to Figure 1, the shield 1 is basically box shaped and is fitted to an existing or new PIN terminal keypad 4 by a means suitable for the design of keypad applicable. The end of the shield, left hand side as shown, is open to allow the card holder's fingers to reach the keys on the keypad. A translucent panel 2 allows light through to illuminate the keys on the keypad. The louvre slats 3 are individually angled to allow the card holder clear sight of all the keys when viewed from the correct angle as illustrated by the dotted lines. The louvre slats overlap each other when viewed from directly above or from the side thus preventing a bystander observing or a hidden camera recording the PIN number entered. Figure 2 shows how the louvre slats overlap when viewed from above thus preventing a bystander observing or a hidden camera recording the PIN number being entered. A hinge could be incorporated in the shield so that it may be opened to facilitate cleaning of the keys on the keypad. The shield could also be used on cash machines and on any other device where PIN number security is vital. Figures 1 and 2 show the basic features of the shield that may be adapted as necessary to suit various applications.
