Abstract

Almost all mobile phones Store data on the SIM card, some of this data having been generated by the user. The user involvement means that this data can not be automatically recreated should the device (and thus SIM card) be lost, stolen, or damaged. Whilst some network operators offer a service of creating a backup copy this requires a visit to one of their stores, no network operator uses the wireless connection to create a copy of the data on the SIM card and thus avoid loss of valuable data should the original SIM card become inaccessible through damage, loss or other cause.

Description

DESCRIPTION
Almost all mobile phones store data on the SIM card, some of this data having been generated by the user. The user involvement means that this data can not be automatically recreated should the device (and thus SIM card) be lost, stolen, or damaged. Whilst some network operators offer a service of creating a backup copy this requires a visit to one of their stores, no network operator uses the wireless connection to create a copy of the data on the SIM card and thus avoid loss of valuable data should the original SIM card become inaccessible through damage, loss or other cause.
Background
Mobile phones are now used by an estimated 2.7 billion people. Mobile phones commonly include an address book whereby the user can store frequently called numbers in memory. This data (amongst others) may be stored on the phones SIM card or on other memory on the phone. If the SIM card becomes inaccessible (stolen, lost, damaged, etc) then the data which the user has created and stored on the SIM is lost. This data loss is a common problem and despite the large number of mobile phones in existence there has been little attempt to address the issue.
The proposed invention is to use the connection to a network -which is implicit in a mobile phone -to create a copy of the information on the SIM card, allowing it to be recreated in the event of loss. This is superior to the current situation whereby either (i) all data is lost; (ii) or the user must manually create a backup via a physical connection, and all data since the last manual backup is lost.
Description
At the time when the SIM card is originally issued a duplicate copy of the data is created. When the user elects to modify the data on the SIM card the phone is designed to create a note of the alteration. This alteration data is notified to the network operator and the network operator updates the duplicate of the SIM card data.
Should the original SIM card data become inaccessible then the duplicate SIM card data is used to create a replacement SIM card which will automatically include all user created data that has been stored on the original SIM card.
The notification messages may (but do not need to be) sent in the form of text messages to a special number created by the network operator. This enables the implementation to use existing infrastructure and be implemented at lower cost.
The notification messages may be sent as soon as they are created, or instead the network operator may request the update messages from the phone during times of lower network utilisation thus reducing the peak load on the network.

Claims (3)

1. A design of mobile phone which uses the inherent network connectivity to create remote duplicate copies of user created information that has been stored on the SIM card, this remote information allowing a recreation of the original SIM data in the event it becomes unavailable through loss, damage or other causes
2. The method according to Claim I whereby the messages to update the duplicate are transmitted via the text messaging protocol
3. The method according to Claim I whereby the update messages are requested from the mobile phone by the network operator, thus allowing the network operator to schedule this data transfer for periods of lower network utilisation
