Abstract

The invention concerns a possession registration and return system to recover lost property where the owner's address and/or contact details are kept confidential. Labels or tags bearing unique identifiers may be purchased and registered on-line where they are associated with the owner's contact details. The labels or tags are then applied to the owner's possessions. The unique identifiers are in the form of a series of lefters and/or numbers, allowing those who find labelled possessions to contact the object's owner by entering the identifier ID into a website. The system notifies the owner via email and/or SMS that the item has been found and thanks the finder. The owner then contacts the finder to arrange for the return of the item. An owner's contact details are only associated with the unique identifier sequence within the system database, thus preserving the anonymity of possession ownership.

Description

Background
Numerous personal possessions are lost each year. If these items are large they might carry the user's address or contact details so, if found, they can be returned. However, often owners are reluctant to personally identify their possessions for fear of theft (through address association) or simply for aesthetic reasons. For smaller, high value items, conventional labelling is more difficult, due to size and aesthetics. The Online Possession Registration and Return System, sets out to solve these problems.
Description
The system comprises two elements: unique identifiers printed on labels or tags; a web-based registration and communications system. Each identifier comprises a series of letters and/or numbers printed on a small, durable, self-adhesive label, or luggage tag, here referred to as a ReturnTag.
The tags or labels are sold in retail outlets or directly to corporations. Once purchased, ReturnTags are registered on-line and associated with the owner's contact details. The ReturnTags are then applied to possessions.
Typical items might include mobile phones, cameras, ipods, laptop computers, etc. This is illustrated in Diagram 1.
If an item is found, the finder is encouraged by the message on the ReturnTag to enter the unique identifier sequence and the finder's contact details into a website. The system then notifies the owner that the item has been found, via email and/or SMS, and thanks the finder. The owner then contacts the finder to arrange for the return of the item. This is illustrated in Diagram 2.
Key Features 1. On-line asset registration system, with general applicability to a wide range of personal and corporate possessions.
2. Assets and ownership are only matched within the system and are not visible to anybody who finds an item, thus preserving anonymity.
3. Automated notification of owner if an item is found and its identity entered into the found section of the website.

Claims (3)

  1. Claims 1. An on-line asset registration and found-item notification system, in which ownership and asset identity are matched within a web-enabled database system.
  2. 2. An asset registration and found-item notification system, in accordance with Claim 1, in which asset identity is facilitated via a unique string of letters and/or numbers printed on adhesive labels or tags, the association between asset ownership and the identity tags is established at the time of on-line registration of the identity tag
  3. 3. An asset registration and found-item notification system, in accordance with Claim 1 which, when a previously registered unique identity sequence is entered into a web-based system by the finder of a lost asset, automatically informs the registered owner that the asset has been found, sending the finder's contact details to the owner, by electronic means such as email or SMS, to facilitate discussion between the finder and asset owner and the return of the asset.
