Abstract
245,145. Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken. Dec. 24, 1924, [Convention date]. Drawings to Specification. Vacuum tubes; R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-A coating of alkaline earth metal oxide is formed on a cathode by oxidizing wholly or partly the surface of a core of base metal, coating the oxidized surface with an azide of one or more alkaline earth metals, heating to decompose the azide, and heating subsequently in an atmosphere containing oxygen to oxidize the reduced metal wholly or partly. In the preferred process a solution of barium azide or a mixture of azides is trickled or squirted on to a nickel wire which is heated electrically to dry the azide. The prepared wire is mounted in a bulb which is then exhausted, and the wire heated electrically at 180-250‹ C. to decompose the azide. Oxygen or air is admitted and the temperature of the wire raised to 500‹ C. to oxidize the layer of metal, and the bulb is evacuated; a gas filling may be admitted subsequently. The cathode may be aged by gradually heating it to a high temperature and maintaining it at that temperature. In a modified process the wire is dipped in a solution of azide. Specifications 209,730, 214,262, and 229,622 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of a core of nickel. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
