Abstract
An inflatable seal that is fitted into the frame or wing of a door/window, the seal inflatable when needed to prevent the ingress of water. The seal may be bonded to a recess in the frame and when not in use a cover may be placed over the seal to conceal it. The door may have a curved recess to provide greater contact with the seal. The inflatable seal may be inflated by a bicycle pump, or a compressed gas cylinder. As well as being gas inflated the seal may be inflated via an inert liquid, for example water.
Description
KEY
Drawing 1 of 3 Basic cutaway drawings showing side view of seal in area of bottom of door, for example seal shown de-flated.
Drawing 2 of 3 Drawing showing seal cover removed, and seal inflated, for when flooding imminent.
PNEUMATIC / HYDRAULIC INFLATED BUILDING DOOR SEAL
Description
This Door Seal is designed to prevent the ingress of flood water into a building, normally to a level of approx 1 metre.
Together with other modifications to a house / ground floor office, protection to a higher depth of flood water is possible, & the Seal can easily be manufactured to protect the whole door.
The Seal is incorporated into a recess within the specially adapted / constructed door frame. Under normal circumstances, the Seal would be hardly noticeable.
When flooding is imminent, Seal covers are removed from the door frame to expose the Seal.
The door is firmly closed, & the Seal inflated by means such as bicycle pump, specially manufactured pump, or compressed gas canister.
The attachment for these pumps again contained within door frame, under a cover, either inside or outside the property.
When inflated, the Seal fills the gap between the door frame & door, preventing ingress of water. The door has curved recess to provide greater contact area for Seal.
A Hydraulic (Seal inflated by water, or other inert liquid) variation would provide increased protection.
A further variation would be to have a compressed gas canister version, remotely activated by telephone or remote control in circumstances when an owner / occupier spend time away from home or office.
Even a fully automatic system could be produced.
When the danger of flooding passes, the Seal can be deflated, re-stowed within the doorframe & clip on covers re-fitted to conceal Seal.
The Seal is bonded to the door frame, to help Sealing qualities, & re-stowage after inflation.
A variation would be to have Seal within the door instead of door frame.
See following drawings of cut-away section of door & door frame, incorporating Seal.
Drawings show lower section of door, & door step, though same principle applies throughout the door & door frame.
Claims (1)
- PNEUMATIC / HYDRAULIC INFLATED BUILDiNG DOOR SEAL Claims * This DoorSeal is designed to prevent the ingress of flood water into a building, normally to a level of approx 1 metre, though full door coverage possible.* The Seal is incorporated into a recess within the specially adapted / constructed door / door frame, & bonded to in place.* Under normal circwnstances, the Seal would be concealed.* When flooding imminent, the door is firmly closed, & the Seal inflated by means such as bicycle pump, specially manufactured pump, or compressed gas canister from either inside or outside the building.* A Hydraulic (Seal inflated by water, or other inert liquid) variation would provide firmer Seal therefore increased protection.* The door has curved recess to provide greater contact area for Seal.* When inflated, the Seal fills the gap between the door frame & door, preventing ingress of water.* When the danger of flooding passes, the Seal can be deflated, re-stowed within the doorframe & clip on covers re-fitted to conceal Seal.* A variation would be to have Seal within the door instead of door frame.Z
