Abstract

A security system for a portable electrical apparatus 4 such as a vehicle stereo system 4 located in a frame 5 includes an electrical power supply 21 for energising the apparatus and a locking device 6 connected to the same supply. The device 6 includes a powered unit 7 which normally secures a locking element 8 in a disengaged position.. When the power supply 21 is switched off the unit 7 releases element 8 so that a lower end 9 can engage the frame 5 to secure the apparatus against removal. Preferably the element 8 falls under the effect of gravity.

Description

SECURITY SYSTEM FOR A PORTABLE ELECTRICAL APPARATUS
The present invention relates to a security system for securing a portable electrical apparatus which can be used, for example, in a vehicle such as a car or a boat or a caravan or even a house and which is normally relatively easy to remove.
Most cars or other vehicles are supplied with electrical apparatus such as stereo systems which are subject to being stolen. Initially the stereo system is installed in the car or other vehicle by the manufacturer in such a way that it is difficult to steal the system It cannot normally be taken out from the front of the dashboard in which the apparatus is installed. It is therefore necessary to get to the apparatus from a compartment located behind the dashboard in order to steal the apparatus. Aftermarket apparatus installed to replace apparatus initially installed during the manufacture of the car or other vehicle Is usually easier to steal.
Aftermarket and manufactured stereo systems are frequently stolen. If this should happen a replacement system may be bought from a motor accessory dealer, for example. These replacement systems are usually initially mounted within a metal framework and inserted, still mounted within the metal framework, from within the space located behind the dashboard so that the front of the stereo system is positioned on the dashboard.
It is desirable to ensure that these aftermarket or replacement systems cannot easily be stolen.
The electrical apparatus is normally suppried with electrical power from within the vehicle to operate the apparatus.
According to the invention a security system for a portable electrical apparatus is provided with a locking device which is activated when the electrical power supply to the apparatus is switched OFF and locks the apparatus in position.
Preferably the locking device indudes a locking element operated by gravity.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure us a front view of a manufacturer or after market installed stereo system mounted directly in a suitable opening in the dashboard of a car in front of the driver and the front seat passenger, or in other similar positions in a boat or a caravan or a house.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the apparatus illustrated in Figure 1 and showing how a replacement or aftermarket stereo system is mounted in a metal frame and including a locking device for securing the replacement stereo system and the metal frame in the car,
I
Figure 3is a circuit diagram of an electrical power supply system for supplying power to the stereo system and the locking device.
Figure 1 illustrates diagrammatically a stereo system I mounted by the car manufacturer in the dashboard 2 of a car by inserting the stereo system I from the front into a suitably shaped opening 3 in the dashboard 2.
Figure 2 Is a view of the rear side of a replacement or aftermarket stereo system 4 mounted in a metal frame 5 and inserted into the same opening 3 in the dashboard 2 but from the rear of the dashboard. The rear portion of the stereo system is provided with a locking device 6. The locking device 6 comprises a power unit 7 attached to the back of the stereo system and including a rod 8 the lower end 9 of which is adapted to extend through a hole 12 in a guide plate 14 also attached to the back of the stereo system 4. Plate 11 secures the locking device 6 to the back of he stereo system 4.
When the power unit 7 is switched off, the lower end of the rod 8 moves downwards under gravity so that it extends through the holel2 and behind the frame 3 so that the stereo system is locked in the car.
FIgure 3 illustrates diagrammatically a circuit diagram for the supply of electrical power both to the replacement stereo system 4 and to the locking device 6. The electrical power supply comprises a source of electrical energy 21, such as a battery, supplying power both to the stereo system 4 and to the locking device 6.
The power supply may be part of the ignition system of a car. When the ignition switch 22 is switched ON the power is supplied to the stereo system 4 and also to other related circuits in the car. Power is also supplied to the locking device 6 on the back of the stereo system 4.
When the ignition switch 22 is switched OFF the power is no longer supplied to the locking devIce 6. This allows the rod 8 to move downward under gravity so that the lower of the rod 8 drops past the lower portion of the stereo system and behind the frame 3. This prevents the replacement stereo system 4 from being removed from the car.
While the invention has been described herein with reference to a replacement stereo system for a car it can alternatively be applied to a portable electrical apparatus which is normally relatively easy to remove and is installed in a caravan or a boat or even a house.

Claims (6)
