Description

THRESHOLD STRIP
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a threshold sii-ip for providing a transition between a pair of adjacent floor surfaces.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Threshold strips are commonly used to provide a transition between a pair of adjacent floor surfaces, for instance in a doorway.
An object of the invention is to provide a threshold strip that can be used for a wide range of floor thicknesses.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
A first aspect of the invention provides a threshold strip for providing a transition between a pair of adjacent floor surfaces, comprising: a base having a floor plate and a projection extending from the floor plate; a hinge shaft having an opening which receives the projection so as to form an expansion joint which enables the height of the hinge shaft to be adjusted by moving the projection in or out of the opening; and a cap having a socket which receives the hinge shaft so as to fonn a hinge joint which enables the angle of the cap to be adjusted by rotating the socket around the shaft.
A second aspect of the invention provides a kit of parts for assembling the threshold strip of the first aspect of the invention, the kit comprising a base having a floor plate and a projection extending from the floor plate; one or more hinge shafts, each hinge shaft having an opening; and a cap having a socket.
A third aspect of the invention provides a hinge shaft for use in the threshold strip of the first aspect of the invention, the hinge shaft comprising a hinge shaft body, and a pair of hinge shaft supports which extend from the hinge shaft body and have a gap between them which forms an opening.
I
Preferably the hinge joint comprises one or more teeth or recesses on one side of the hinge joint which can engage with a series of recesses or teeth on the other side of the hinge joint to provide a series of indexed positions. For example the socket may comprises one or more teeth which can engage with a series of recesses in the shaft to provide the series of indexed positions.
Preferably the expansion joint comprises one or more teeth or recesses on one side of the expansion joint which can engage with a series of recesses or teeth on the other side of the expansion joint to provide a series of indexed positions. For example the projection comprises two or more teeth which can engage with a series of recesses in the opening to provide the series of indexed positions.
The floor plate may extend on both sides of the projection, and may have a pair of flanges which extend from the floor plate and are positioned on opposite sides of the projection.
Typically the opening in the hinge shaft extends into the interior of the shaft, so that the base of the opening is closer to the centre of the hinge shaft than the socket. This provides a particularly compact arrangement. The opening in the binge shaft may extend through the centre of the hinge shaft.
Typically the hinge shaft comprises a hinge shaft body, and a pair of hinge shaft supports which extend from the hinge shaft body and have a gap between them which forms the opening.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
A embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1-4 are cross-sectional views of a threshold strip in four different configurations with a first hinge shaft; Figure is an end view of the base; Figure 6 is an end view of the hinge shaft; Figure 7 is a perspective view of the hinge shaft; Figure 8 is an end view of the cap; Figures 9-12 are cross-sectional views of a threshold strip in four different configurations with a second hinge shaft; and Figure 13 is an end view of an alternative base.
DETAiLED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENT(S)
A threshold strip 1 for providing a transition between a pair of adjacent floor coverings 2,3 is shown in Figure 1. The threshold strip comprises an Aluminium base 9 shown in detail in Figure 5 having a floor plate 4 and a projection 5 extending vertically from the floor plate. The floor plate 4 can be glued, nailed or screwed to the sub-floor surface 8. The floor plate 4 extends on both sides of the projection 5 and has a pair of flanges 6,7 which extend vertically from the floor plate and engage with the end faces of the floor coverings 2,3 as shown inFigure 1.
The base 9 is provided in a kit of parts with a hinge shaft 19 formed of extruded plastic (such as Polyamide 6) and shown in detail in Figures 6 and 7. The hinge shaft comprises a cylindrical hinge shaft body 10, and a pair of hinge shaft supports 11,12 which extend from the hinge shaft body 10 and have a gap 13 between them. The gap 13 forms an opening which extends through the centre 15 of the hinge shaft body 10 so that the base 14 of the opening is closer to the centre of the hinge shaft body than the cylindrical outer surface of the hinge shaft body..
The opening 13 receives the projection 5 as shown in Figure 1 so as to form an expansion joint which enables the height of the hinge shaft to be adjusted by moving the projection in or out of the opening. Thus for example in Figures 1 and 2 the hinge shaft is in its lowest position and in Figures 3 and 4 the hinge shaft has been adjusted to a raised position.
The projection 5 is formed with a series of teeth which can engage with a series of recesses 16 in the opening to provide a series of indexed positions for the expansion joint.
An Aluminium cap 20 is provided as part of the kit, and shown in detail in Figure 8. The cap 20 comprises a cap body 21, and a pair of resilient clip arms 22,23 which define a socket 24 between them. The socket 24 receives the hinge shaft body 10 so as to form a hinge joint which enables the angle of the cap to be adjusted by rotating the clip arms 22,23 around the shaft. As shown most clearly in Figure 8, the clip arms 22,23 are each formed with a pair of teeth 25 which can engage with a series of recesses 17 in the shaft 19 to provide a series of indexed rotational positions. Thus for example the cap can be rotated from the level position shown in Figure 1 and 3 to the angled positions shown in Figures 2 and 4.
The combination of the expansion joint and the hinge joint enables the threshold strip to be adjusted to accommodate a wide range of thickness of floor coverings, as demonstrated by Figure 1-4.
In the lowered level position shown in Figure 1 the threshold strip provides a transition between a pair of adjacent floor coverings 2, 3 each having a height of 5.9mm.
In the lowered angled position shown in Figure 2 the threshold strip provides a transition between a floor covering 2a having a height of 12.8mm, and the sub-floor surface 8.
Note that the male/female expansion joint between the base and the hinge shaft provides a compact arrangement which enables the hinge joint to rotate fully even when the strip is in its lowered position.
In the raised level position shown in Figure 3 the threshold strip provides a transition between a pair of adjacent floor coverings 2b,3b each having a height of 10.5mm.
In the raised angled position shown in Figure 4 the threshold strip provides a transition between a floor covering 2c having a height of I 9.3mm, and a floor covering 3c having a height of 1.6mm.
The floor coverings may be solid wood, laminate, engineered wood, tiles, vinyl or carpet.
A second hinge shaft is provided with the kit of parts and can be used to provide a transition between floor coverings of greater thickness. The second hinge shaft is shown in Figure 9-12 and comprises a hinge shaft body 30 and a pair of supports 3 1,32 which are longer than the supports 11,12 of the first hinge shaft 19. Note also that the opening in the hinge shaft, whilst extending partially into the hinge shaft body 30, does not extend in as far as the opening 13 of the first hinge shaft 19.
In the lowered level position shown in Figure 9 the threshold strip provides a transition between a pair of adjacent floor coverings (not shown) each having a height of 10.4mm.
In the lowered angled position shown in Figure 10 the threshold strip provides a transition between a floor coverings (not shown) having a height of 19.3mm, and 1.5mm.
In the raised level position shown in Figure 11 the threshold strip provides a transition between a pair of adjacent floor coverings (not shown) each having a height of 15.1mm.
In the raised angled position shown in Figure 12 the threshold strip provides a transition between a floor covering (not shown) having a height of 24mm, and a floor covering (not shown) having a height of 6.2mm.
An alternative base 9a is shown in Figure 13. The base 9a is similar to the base 9 and the same reference numerals are used to indicate similar components. In this case the projection 5a has a tapered tip 40 which guides the projection 5a into the opening in the hinge shaft.
Although the invention has been described above with reference to one or more preferred embodiments, it will be appreciated that various changes or modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
