Abstract

A locking apparatus 1 for locking a slide-means operated lock device 2, comprises a cylinder lock 3 such as a key operated multipoint lock and a separate lever-type mortise lock 4. In the embodiment shown, the lever-type mortise lock 4 may be a five lever mortise lock or a three lever mortise lock. In the locked position, the mortise lock 4 disables the operation of the handle to open the door. Thus, if the cylinder lock 3 is tampered with as by key-bumping or any other means, operation of the handle does not allow the door to be opened as the bolt 11 of the mortise lock 4 is engaged in the slide bar 5b, i.e. is immovable, and so the bolts 6 remain in the locked position. Only on disengagement of the mortise lock can the slide bar 5 be operated.

LOCKING APPARATUS
The invention relates to locking apparatus, particularly to such apparatus for locking a slide-means operated lock device.
Such a lock device is often used to secure a closure such as a patio door in a closed position. There is slide means which are controlled by a multi-point lock so that when unlocked, a handle can be turned to operate the slide means such as a slide or rod, which operation withdraws bolts from seatings in the door frame so that the door can be opened.
The multi-point lock is usually substantially centrally positioned, and is a key operated cylinder lock. Such a lock is vulnerable to unauthorised operation by being forced as by key bumping or other means. The door can then be opened for illegal entry.
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the invention there is provided apparatus for locking a slide-means operated lock device, comprising a cylinder lock and a separate lever-type mortise lock.
The lever type mortise lock may be a five or a three lever type mortise lock.
It will be understood that the invention extends to a closure such as a patio door having apparatus as hereinbefore defined installed thereon.
Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The drawing shows schematically an elevational view of apparatus according to the invention.
Refemng to the drawing, there is shown apparatus 1 for locking a slide-means operated lock device 2, comprising a cylinder lock 3 such as a key operated multipoint lock and a separate lever-type mortise lock 4. In the embodiment shown, the lever-type mortise lock 4 may be a five lever mortise lock or a three lever mortise lock.
The slide means is a slide bar 5 essentially in two parts Sa and 5b which are slid away from each other to throw bolts 6 at each end into seats or keepers in the door frame on locking operation of the cylinder lock 3, there being known mechanisms 7 which are operated by the longitudinal movement of the slide bar parts to extend the bolts 6, as shown. To open the door, the cylinder lock 3 is unlocked, which slides the slide bar parts 5a and Sb towards one another and withdraws the respective bolts 6 from their keepers. The door can then be opened by turning a handle (not shown).
Movement of the bolts 6 to lock and unlock positions is in a direction transverse to the slide bar, and is guided by a pin 8 running in a blind groove 9 or slot in a mounting plate 10.
The mortise lock 4 is positioned between the top or bottom bolt 6 and the (usually) centrally-located cylinder lock 3. It has a mortise bolt 11 which when locked engages in the slide bar, for example in a through aperture in the slide bar which in the locked position of the slide bar is opposite the lock 4. This is shown in the Figure.
In the locked position, the mortise lock 4 disables the operation of the handle to open the door. Stated in another way, if the cylinder lock 3 is tampered with as by key-bumping or any other means, operation of the handle does not allow the door to be opened as the bolt 11 of the mortise lock 4 is engaged in the slide bar Sb, i.e. is immovable, and so the bolts 6 remain in the locked position. Only on disengagement of the mortise lock can the slide bar 5 be operated.
Security is thus enhanced.
The embodiment shown has one lever mortise-type lock 4 used in conjunction with the multipoint cylinder key operated lock 3. It will be understood that in other embodiments (not shown) there are a plurality of mortise locks 4, for example two, one either side of the multi-point lock 3. When one mortise-type lock is used, it can be adjacent the top or the bottom, in use, bolt 6.
