Abstract
An assembly 1 of a frame 2 such as a door or window frame is mounted at a cavity wall 3 having an inner and an outer leaf 4 and 5 respectively, of brickwork or blockwork, separated by a cavity 6. There is below the frame 2 a device 7 having a substantially rigid non-combustible insulated cavity closer means 8 of foam, on one face of which is a flexible metal foil or membrane 9 which is on a face of the closer means 8 which extends across and faces into the cavity.
Description
I
A DEVICE AND ASSEMBLY
The invention relates to a device and assembly, particularly as used at or in a cavity wall construction.
Cavity walls are commonly used in building construction, and usually comprise two leaves, of brickwork or blockwork, separated by a cavity. There is a problem associated, with such walls, namely loss of heat therethrough.
In modem times, the phenomenon of global warming has lead to measures to try to reduce this wasteful loss of heat, so much so that in the United Kingdom houses which reduce heat loss through such walls by 25% have a tax known as Stamp Duty reduced commensurately when they are sold.
It is an object of this invention to seek to provide a device and an assembly which reduce heat loss.
According to a first aspect the invention provides a device for mounting at a cavity of a cavity wall, comprising a substantially rigid closer means having on one face a heat resistant foil or membrane.
According to a second aspect the invention provides an assembly comprising a cavity wall, a frame of a closure set back a minimum desired distance from an inner face of an outer leaf of the cavity wall and a device for mounting at the cavity having a substantially rigid closer means and a heat resistant foil or membrane on one face of the closer means, the arrangement being such that the device is below a part of the frame which overhangs the cavity.
It will be understood too that the invention extends to a building including a device and an assembly as hereinbefore described.
Devices and assemblies according to the invention are hereinafter described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which the seven Figs. show four embodiments of device and assembly according to the invention.
In the drawings, in which like parts are referred to by like numerals, there is shown an assembly I of a frame 2 such as a door or window frame mounted at a cavity wall 3 having an inner and an outer leaf 4 and 5 respectively, of brickwork or blockwork, separated by a cavity 6.
There is below the frame 2 a device 7 having a substantially rigid non-combustible insulated cavity closer means 8 of foam, on one face of which is a flexible metal or membrane 9 which in Figs. I to 5 is on a face of the closer means 8 which extends across and faces into the cavity.
In Fig. 6, the foil or membrane 9 is on a face of the closer means 8 which abuts an inner face of the inner leaf 5 of the cavity wall 3, and which lies in substantially the same plane as the inner edge of the frame 2, which itself is set back a distance in the embodiments of 30mm from the inner face of the outer leaf 4 of the cavity wall 3.
The combination of set back of the frame 2 and use of foil 9 reduces heat loss through the wall by at least 25% of the normal i value.
Fig. 7 shows the assembly used at a party wall arrangement.
The closer means 8 is held in a mounting element which bridges the cavity 6, and in some cases the foil 9 is wider than the closer means 8 and can thus be bent to extend round the closer means 8 as shown at 9a and 9b in e.g. Fig. 3. This can enhance prevention of heat loss.
In Fig. 7, there is a closer means 8 which is a fire and acoustic insulated DPC (damp proof course).
Various standard elements such as wall ties, peeling strips etc. are not specifically referred to as they form no part of the invention.
