Binding-apparatus.-An independent machine for packing and binding hay, straw. or corn, &c. comprises a light frame 1 of tubular members jointed together and supported by a wheel 2 and tubular legs 3. The longitudinal frame members accommodate, two shafts 4, 5, the shaft 5 being provided with a handle 6 and being connected by a crank 10 and a link 12 to a crank 11 on the shaft 4. A second link 13 extends from the crank 11 to one end of a lever 14 pivoted on the shatf 5 and at its other end connected to a U-shaped member 8 pivoted on the shaft 5 and adapted to receive the material to be bound. A pair of arms 7 is secured to the shaft 5 and these arms are adapted to move towards the member 8 to compress the material for binding. A needle arm 9 is secured to the shaft 4 and a knot-tying mechanism 16 partially covered by a shield 15 is provided. In operation the material is placed on the member 8 and the handle 6 turned to rotate the shafts. The member 8 and the arms 7 swing towards one another, the material being pushed on to the binding cord which is then brought round by the movement of the needle 9 and knotted by the mechanism 16. The movement of the shaft 5 is then reversed, permitting the bound sheaf to fall through the machine. The two shafts may be connected by a transverse shaft instead of the links and cranks and such transverse shaft may be driven from the supporting wheels of the machine. The arms 7, member 8 or needle 9 may be pivoted on the frame of the machine and actuated by cams on the shafts.
