Description
Title: Beverage Dispensing
Description of Invention
This invention relates to a method of, and apparatus for, dispensing a beverage. More particularly, the invention relates to a method wherein the dispensing of a quantity of a beverage in frozen form is utilised so that a beverage to be consumed is at as cold a temperature as possible, and to apparatus for enabling the method to be performed.
Some beverages, for example ciders or some beers, or soft drinks, are preferably served chilled. To add ice to the glass, or other receptacle in which the beverage is served, to chill the liquid beverage, has the often undesirable side effect of diluting the beverage to which the ice has been added as the ice melts. A solution to this problem is to add to the liquid beverage a quantity of the beverage which has been frozen, possibly in the form of a semi-solid "slush", which form is readily achievable when certain alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages are frozen. This overcomes the dilution problem, but has disadvantages in that it is very difficult repeatedly to provide the same quantity of the frozen beverage each time a beverage is served, to provide a repeatable structure of the frozen beverage, to produce the frozen beverage quickly enough to supply demand, and to prevent contamination of the frozen beverage.
It is broadly the aim of this invention to overcome one or more of these disadvantages.
According to one aspect of the invention, we provide a method of dispensing a quantity of a frozen beverage, comprising providing a sealed container containing the frozen quantity of the beverage, the container having a wall portion which is displaceable relative to the remainder of the container, the method comprising providing an opening in the container, causing displacement of the wall portion of the container relative to the remainder of the container, thereby moving the beverage towards the opening of the container, and dispensing the frozen beverage through the opening.
Preferably the displaceable wall portion comprises a base of the container, and force is applied to the base causing it to move through the container to displace the beverage towards and through the opening of the container.
According to another aspect of the invention, we provide a method of dispensing a beverage, comprising dispensing a liquid beverage into a vessel, and dispensing a quantity of a frozen beverage into the vessel by a method according to the first aspect of the invention.
The frozen and liquid beverages may be the same as one another, or possibly they may be different from one another.
In accordance with the invention, the above-referred to disadvantages of previous-proposed methods of serving chilled beverage by addition of a quantity of frozen beverage to liquid beverage, namely lack of repeatability, and the possibility of contamination of the frozen beverage, can be overcome.
The size of the container determines the quantity of the frozen beverage which is used, and different sized containers containing different quantities of frozen beverage may be used according to the desired quantity of beverage which is to be served. Complex and expensive equipment to provide the frozen beverage is not necessary: a number of containers for the beverage may simply be frozen and stored as required in ordinary freezers such as are typically used for frozen food storage.
According to another aspect of the invention, we provide a container for a quantity of beverage, the container having a wall with a portion displaceable relative to the remainder of the container, and an opening sealable by a lid, the lid being openable to allow the beverage to be expelled from the container by displacement of said wall portion by the container.
The wall portion of the container preferably is a base thereof, moveable through the container to expel the beverage from the container.
A container in accordance with the invention preferably is adapted to be engaged by a dispensing device for dispensing the beverage from the container.
According to yet another aspect of the invention, we provide a device for dispensing a beverage from a container according to the third aspect of the invention.
Further features of the method, the container, and the dispensing device in accordance with the invention will be referred to more particularly in the following description, in which the invention will be described by way of example only, and with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: FIGURE 1 is a top perspective view of a container according to the present invention, FIGURE 2 is a bottom perspective view of the container, and FIGURE 3 is a top perspective view of a part of a dispensing device and a container.
Referring first to figure 1 there is provided a container, shown generally at 10, comprising a body 12, a lid 14 and a base 16. In the present example the container 10 is substantially cylindrical, and the lid 14 and the base 16 are substantially circular, however it will be apparent that the container 10 may be of other cross-sectional shape and have any dimensions as required. The volume of the container is determined by the quantity of beverage that it is required to hold.
The container 10 is suitable for holding a beverage, and the lid 14 and the base 16 seal the container 10 to prevent the beverage from leaking therefrom.
The lid 14 and the base 16 are, in this example, substantially parallel to each other.
The lid 14 may be removable from the container 10 to form an opening through which the beverage within the container may be dispensed. In the present example, the lid 14 comprises a tab 18 which can be grasped and pulled to remove the lid 14 from the container 10. It will be appreciated that all or a part of the lid 14 is removable from the container 10.
Alternatively or additionally, the lid 14 may be penetrable. The lid 14 may be provided with at least one weakened portion which is more easily penetrable than the remainder of the lid 14.
The base 16 is moveable with respect to the body 12 and the lid 14 of the container. The base 16 is moveable longitudinally of the body 12, in a direction which is substantially perpendicular to the lid 14, to alter the volume of the container 10. The base 16 is dimensioned such that it is able to slide through the body 12 of the container 10, with a fit sufficiently tight for the beverage in the container 10 be unable to leak from the container 10 the body 12 and the base 14.
The container 10 is engageable with a dispensing device, a part of which is shown in figure 3. The dispensing device comprises a holding formation for holding the container fixed with respect to the dispensing device in at least one direction. The dispensing device also comprises an engagement member 22 which is engageable with the base 16 of the container 10. In the present example the engagement member 22 comprises a plunger which comprises a substantially cylindrical block 22a carried at one end of a rod 22k. The plunger 22 is moveable, in response to a command, with respect to the holding formation of the dispensing device and hence is moveable with respect to a container 10 which is engaged with the dispensing device. For example, applying a manual force to a handle (not shown) of the dispensing device, causes the plunger 22 to move in a direction which corresponds to the manually applied force. The block 22a is dimensioned such that its diameter is similar to or smaller than the diameters of the base 16 and the body 12 such that it is able to push the base 16 through the body 12. The dispensing device may be hand-held, or may comprise mounting means for mounting the dispensing device to support structure (not shown), for example a bar or a One of the container 10 and the dispensing device comprises an interference device 20 for breaking a frozen beverage into a plurality of pieces as it is dispensed from the container 10. The interference device 20 can be fitted to the container 10, or to the dispensing device, such that the interference device is in proximity to the opening of the container 10.
The interference device comprises a ring 20 which has a similar diameter to the container 10. The interference device comprises at least one breaker 22b comprising a bar which extends diametrically across the ring 20g. It will be apparent that the breaker(s) 22 may be in any formation as required.
In the example where the interference device 20 is connected to the container 10, it is preferably located on the outside the container 10, adjacent and substantially parallel to the lid 14.
In the example where the interference device 20 is connected to the dispensing device, it is positioned such that when the container 10 is engaged with the dispensing device, the lid 14, and hence the opening of the container 10, is located adjacent and substantially parallel to the interference device 20.
The container 10 may be engageable with the interference device 20 which is attached to the dispensing device.
It will be apparent that provided that the frozen beverage impinges on the interference device 20 and is broken into a plurality of pieces by the at least one breaker 22b as it is dispensed from the container 10, the position and orientation of the interference device 20 can be selected as required.
Where the lid 14 of the container 10 is provided with at least one weakened, more easily penetrable portion, the interference device 20 and the container must be engaged such that the weakened portion(s) are not adjacent the breaker(s) 22a, as this would inhibit the penetration of the lid 14. To avoid this, the container 10 and the dispensing device comprise corresponding engagement formations to engage the container 10 with the dispensing device in a specified orientation.
In use, the container 10 is at least partially filled with a liquid beverage. The container 10 is then chilled to at least partially freeze the beverage. The beverage may be a soft drink or an alcoholic beverage. It is advantageous to allow the beverage to freeze until it is partly solidified, or slush. Preferably part of the volume of the container 10 is not filled with liquid beverage in order that as the beverage freezes, the expansion of the beverage will not break the container 10 or leak therefrom. Since the base 16 of the container 10 is moveable with respect to the body 12, as the beverage freezes, the base 16 is able to move away from the lid 14 of the container 10, so as to increase the volume of the container 10.
When the frozen beverage is to be served, it is dispensed from the container by opening the container 10, either by removing at least a part of the lid 14, or by penetrating the lid 14, and the frozen beverage is dispensed through the opening.
In the present example removal of the lid 14 is achieved by grasping a part of the lid 14, for example the tab 18 which extends from the outer circumference of the lid 14, and pulling the lid 14 away from the body 12 to break the seal therebetween.
An alternative method of opening the container 10 is to pierce the lid 14. The lid 14 is penetrable by a separate device, for example a knife, or by the beverage itself.
To penetrate the lid 14 with the frozen beverage, a force is applied to the base 16 of the container 10, in a direction that causes the base 16 to move through the body 12. The frozen beverage is moved, by the base 16, through the body 12 of the container 10, towards the lid 14. When sufficient force is applied to the base 16, the frozen beverage contacts and penetrates the lid 14. Where the lid 14 is provided with at least one weakened portion, when a force is applied to a substantial area of the lid 14, the weakened portion or portions break under a lower force than the remainder of the lid, and will, in general, be penetrated first.
Irrespective of whether the container 10 has been opened by removal or penetration of the lid 14, the frozen beverage is dispensed from the container 10 by applying a force to the base 16, to move the base 16 through the body 12 of the container 10. The movement of the base 16 pushes the frozen beverage towards and through the opening of the container 10, to dispense the beverage into a glass or other receptacle for serving. The frozen beverage is ideally added to a quantity of the same or a different beverage which is in liquid form. It will be apparent that the liquid and frozen beverages need not be the same, for example, one could be an alcoholic beverage and the other could be a mixer. The quantity of frozen beverage may comprise between 10% and 15% of the liquid volume of the whole beverage, or possibly more, depending on the beverage(s).
When the force required to dispense the beverage from the container 10 is applied using the dispensing device, as the plunger 22 moves towards the container 10 it engages the base 16 and pushes the base 16 through the body 12 of the container to force the frozen beverage through the lid 14 of the container 10, and/or dispense the frozen beverage from the opening of the container 10.
The beverage impinges on the interference device 20 as the beverage is dispensed from the container 10. The interference device 20 breaks the frozen beverage into a plurality of pieces.
It is envisaged that containers as described above may be supplied to establishments where beverages are consumed filled with appropriate quantities of liquid beverage and sealed so that the contained beverage is preserved and prevented from contamination, with a storage life comparable to that of beverage in a bottle or can. At the premises where beverage is to be dispensed, containers may be frozen by being replaced in an ordinary freezer as used for frozen food storage, and a number placed in a storage freezer where beverage is to be dispensed. Such a point of sale freezer may be positioned on or behind a bar, and there appropriate point of sale advertising materials. When cold beverage is to be dispensed, a quantity of liquid beverage may be dispensed into a glass or other vessel in the conventional manner, and the quantity of frozen beverage from the container dispensed as described above into the same vessel. It will be appreciated that the frozen and liquid beverages may be the same beverages as one another, or different beverages.
integers are included. The terms are not to be interpreted to exclude the presence of other features, steps or components.
The features disclosed in the foregoing description, or the following claims, or the accompanying drawings, expressed in their specific forms or in terms of a means for performing the disclosed function, or a method or process for attaining the disclosed result, as appropriate, may, separately, or in any combination of such features, be utilised for realising the invention in diverse forms thereof.
