Abstract

Means for authenticating articles for retail provides each article with a two-part code on a scratch card or label, comprising a Product Security Pin (PSP) and a Unique Identity Text Number (UIN). A portion of the PSP is obscured from view and is covered by a scratch-removable coating. A customer may verify the authenticity of an article by transmitting via SMS, MMS or in conjunction with an automated voice command (AVR) system the readily visible portion of the PSP and UIN code to a certification server. The certification server checks the code for registration and if valid returns to the customer the remaining portion of the PSP. The customer may then reveal the previously obscured portion of the PSP and compare it with the code returned from the certification server. If the two match, the article is deemed to be authentic.
