Abstract
A cover can be fitted to the rear door of a vehicle that opens in an upward motion with hinges on the roof section of the vehicle and has means to attach it to the overhead opened door. The cover may hang on the door though the width of the door. Any of the three sides may have an entry/exit point from the shelter E and may incorporate means to hold the opening in a fixed position. The cover bottom sections may incorporate a means to secure the sides to the ground.
Description
1 2447277 Vehicle rear door cover This invention relates to a cover
that can be fitted to the rear door of a vehicle as long as it opens in the upward motion with hinges on the roof.
The door of a typical MPV vehicle and vehicles alike have a boot or door at the rear of the vehicle that opens upwards and then settles open at height so as to enable ease of access to the inside of the rear of the vehicle.
The vehicle is effectively left exposed to the elements from the outside such as the weather, as well as leaving the inskle of the vehicle and all its contents to be exposed and easily viewable by people outside.
The rear of the vehicles that use this type of door mechanism is often of a type used for recreation and as such the rear of the vehicle becomes a valuable space that is used to rest against whilst changing clothes, shoes, setting up sporting equipment and other activities in preparation prior to engaging in the intended activity.
This space at the rear of a vehicle fitted with a door that opens upwards can be utilised to provide a structure to hang a cover that fits over the opened door and drapes down on all three exposed sides thus enclosing the area beneath the door that will be sheltered from the outside.
The cover will overcome the exposure aspect provided by the opened door whilst replacing it with a sheltered space that can be used to provide privacy for the occupant as well as shelter from the weather. Effectively the cover will act as an awning and as such provide all the benefits that go with it were people can also utilise the space for seating or even using a portable toilet.
Figure 1: Shows an example of a vehicle fitted the door type described that suit the purposes of the cover.
Figure 2: Shows an example of a vehicle fitted the door type described that suit the purposes of the cover, with the door open.
Figure 3: Shows a side view example of the vehicle with the cover fitted.
Figure 4: Shows an inside view of a possible cover.
Figure 5: Shows the cover positioning relative to the door view prior to fitting.
Figure 6: Shows the cover positioned after fitting.
Figure 7: Shows an outside view of a possible cover.
Figure 1, shows an example of a vehicle fitted the door type described that suit the purposes of the cover. Note that the rear door where the cover needs to be fitted is closed.
Figure 2, Shows an example of a vehicle fitted the door type described that suit the purposes of the cover. Note that the rear door is now open and exposing the surface (A) that will be used to attach the cover on. It also shows the length (B) through which the cover will hang. Figure 3, shows a side view example of the vehicle with the cover fitted, note it envelopes the top of the door and covers the sides through depth (C).
Figure 4, shows a diagram of an example of the possible cover shown from the inside view. The top section (1) is attached to sections (2),(3) and (5) which hang to the ground from the top of the door by the length (B). The sides are joined as shown (4), the front section is referred to as (5).
Figure 5, Shows the cover positioning relative to the door view and the possible assembly guidelines prior to fitting, noting that section (1) seats on section (A) of the door.
Figure 6, shows the cover positioned after fitting, and also shows a possible example of where an entry/exit opening (E) could be placed. Figure 7, shows a possible example of the cover from the outside view, with a possible example of where an entry/exit opening (E) could be placed.
Claims (4)
- Claims 1. An enclosure designed to fit over the rear door of a vehiclewhose door opens upwards and is hinged on the top section of the car and can be used when said door is in the open position.

- 3. An overhead enclosure according to claim 1, with material covering the three exposed sides according to claim 2, in which it temporarily increases the area at the rear of the vehicle when the door is open according to ctaim 3, in which has means to allow ingress and exit from the shelter by means of an opening that can be operated from both sides of the enclosure.
