Abstract

A pedestrian controlled child's push chair or stroller 1 includes an electric motor 5 adapted to drive one or two wheels 3 of the push chair 1 fully under the control of the controlling pedestrian. The electric motor 5 may be detachable from the rest of the push chair 1. The motor 5 may be battery powered and recharged using a charger 7 which may be mounted on the stroller 1.

Description

PEDESTRIAN CONTROLLED CHILD'S PUSH CHAIR Push chairs of this type are
designed to be used on a variety of different surfaces which are rough or smooth and which may extend uphill or downhill and may be used in areas which are likely to be occupied by other push chairs and pedestrians. The push chairs are of various sizes, weights and designs and may be collapsible for storing in cars etc. They are often used in congested areas such as shops or shopping precincts and may also be use on roads.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved pedestrian controlled child's push chair.
According to the present invention a pedestrian controlled child's push chair includes an electric motor adapted to drive the push chair and fully under the control of tIe pedestrian controlling the push chair.
The push chair and the motor are preferably provided with a range of safety devices which are fully under the control of the controlling pedestrian.
The electric motor may be designed to detachable from the rest of the push chair for stowage in a car, for example, or so that the push chair is lighter and more compact and can be used, if required, without the electric motor.
The electric motor is preferably battery powered and may be provided with a battery charger.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which the single Figure is a perspective view of a push chair including an electric motor in accordance with the invention, With reference to the drawing a child's push chair comes in a variety of different designs. Essentially, each push chair indudes a body part I adapted to hold a a child, either lying down or sitting up. The body part I is supported on a frame 2 to which are attached three or four wheels 3. The push chair also includes a handle bar 4 which is attached to the body part 1 or to the frame 2 and is adapted to be held by the pedestrian controlling the push chair.
According to the invention a battery powered electric motor 5 is attached directly to one of the wheels 3 or to a shaft 6 connecting two of the wheels.
The motor is powered by a battery which may be a rechargeable battery.
The rechargeable battery is adapted to be connected to a battery charger 7 through a connecting cable 8. The motor 5 is preferably adapted to be detached from the rest of the push chair so as to reduce the overall weight of the push chair and so that the push chair can be stored more neatly. The battery charger can 7 be stored separately from the rest of the push chair and used only used when necessary.
On the handle bar 4 is mounted a first lever 9 to enable the pedestrian controlling the push chair to control the speed of the motor 5. Preferably the lever 9 is designed so as to return to an "off" position when released. The handle bar 4 may also be provided with a braking lever 11 which is adapted to operate on one or more braking systems connected to the wheels 3. The braking systems may be designed to be locked in the ON position.
